""Crazy Rich Asians" follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick's arm puts a target on Rachel's back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick's own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can't buy love, it can definitely complicate things."

Yay! So glad you all enjoyed it! Seeing this with my family this Saturday. I hope major Hollywood studios take more chances on Asian and Asian American actors. This film is way overdue (25 years!) and we need more authentic representations of different Asian voices and identities in the mainstream media/pop culture. 😃

I appreciate Matt pointing out that there are other films with an all Asian cast made with the English Language. Just because CRA presents these MASSIVELY underrepresented groups in a BIG way doesn't mean we should neglect the smaller ones that also show a facet of that culture.
    Celebrate Asian-American Cinema!

If “Crazy Rich Asians” does well, then Warner Brothers is going to green light the other two (books) sequels; that’s why it ended the way it did. I would definitely see the sequels just for Michelle Yeoh’s and Awkwafina’s performances.

This movie has the potential to be the silent hit that girls trip was last year. I want to see this movie last night and I have to say it was really great. It was better than I assumed it would be. There are some parts of the movies probably like three different parts where you may not get it especially if you don't know Asian culture but those parts are not long or not that significant they're just like extra notes you know that they're like subtext but they're later explained throughout the movie. I feel like they could have been better introductions to the next scenes but other than that I really like this movie. I hope it movie gets turned into a franchise because I feel like there was so much that wasn't put into it that was in the book and not even read the book but I just felt like there was something more but I was definitely satisfied but what I got. Oh so does Hollywood stereotype Asians because the Asian men that was in this movie were all hot and very much I can't eat and I was just like where are these Asian man when we watch a movie that has a all white cast and all this other stuff? OneNote there was like one party seeing where there was like random white people and the guys that were working look like the remodels and I was just kind of taking back like that I did really didn't like understand. This movie was a place for me I would definitely recommend people go see it. I wouldn't even call this chick flick or anything close like that this movie is a celebration and it's like a endless party in within the party you see our relationship going towards the next step. The movie is so well done that it draws you into it and towards the end you, don't know how is going to end just because so much has happened and you just like what how we going to fix it.

Michelle Yeoh was the best in this movie. Her delivery of even subtle things was amazing. I found Constance Wu to be a little hammy at times, but her vulnerability was well shown, aided by the visual camera effects.
It's funny that Ben calls it racist to have Mah Jong in there, as you can enjoy the scene without knowing anything about it. It just adds more if you do know. Would Ben say that about anything else specific to a particular region? My guess is he would call it authentic. Ben, you seem a little racist.

    • @meowmeow5087
      @meowmeow5087 Před 5 lety +2

I agree. I think Ben was way too quick in calling that mah jong scene racist simply because it's an Asian game that he, a white person, didn't understand the rules of. I'm Asian and I have no earthly idea how to play mah jong, but I understood what was happening and I got the gist of it based on the conversation the two characters were having -- Eleanor won, but only because Rachel allowed her to.
You don't have to be a blackjack or poker player to know when a character is a lucky winner in the hundreds of movies that utilize that cliche.

I think that people who complain that the movie would’ve gotten poor reviews if the cast was all-white are missing the point. We’ve seen plenty of films where wealth and extravagance are on full display, especially from white casts, but rarely do we ever see that from an Asian perspective. The unique culture and setting of this film, even if it’s glorifying the 1%, is what makes it more interesting than your average rom-com (the Mandarin jazz standard covers were a particularly nice touch), and a lot of the conflicts and themes represent what many Asians really go through in terms of familial piety vs. ambition. It’s not a particularly demanding movie, but I still really enjoyed it for what it was, and the performances were phenomenal. It does feel kinda generic as a plot, but the first step to a truly great Asian-American film being made is normalizing Asian leads in movies with a broad general appeal, and that’s exactly what Crazy Rich Asians does.

Nope, you are not. I am asian american and just saw this as a very generic, feel-good portrayal of the asian community (esp. that of second gen immigrant families and beyond) in the US. In actuality, a lot of asian immigrants--esp. first generation migrants--in the states are poor and have other interesting stories to tell (e.g., how the language barrier and cultural differences make them not feel entirely at home ever in their new country; how they struggle economically and have to work very, very hard while living extremely modestly to get by). Of course, those aren't going to be interesting/flashy and might even be hard to watch.

Great that Asian American actors and filmmakers are finally getting some recognition, but I think the critics are overpraising this. It was 6/10 at best IMO. This movie did nothing particularly special. It's only one step above decent.

I'm all for diversity in film and Asian performers getting a chance to play roles that are complex and rooted in humanity instead of racial stereotypes but...
Couldn't we ALSO just get Jackie Chan to get a buttload of botox (in the face, not the butt) so I don't feel like I'm rooting for my grandfather (or my grandfather's father) when I see his next film?
Ditto Stallone & Arnie while we're at it.

And Jet Li is younger than Chan! He's the same age as Donnie Yen but hasn't aged as well.
And Chan has aged extremely well for 64.
I just wanted to make an "old man" joke while also avoid facing any reminders of the grim specters of age and death myself.

It was NOT a delightful movie. Read Mark Tseng-Putterman's review in The Atlantic for a much more complex and intelligent review. The movie just transferred conspicuous consumption into an Asian context with 2-dimensional characters. I was excited to see it, having lived 4 years in Asian countries. Instead, I was repulsed.

to be frank this was kind a lame and boring movie.People put too much expectation mabe because michele yeo was in this movie and shes a very talented and legend actress and everyone does love plus adored her.The only part i like the most in this movie was the awkwafina characters.Shes kind a very funny and that has save the entire film from boring scenes and lame story.I give a millions credits to her character and as well goes to michelle yeo.Something was missing from this movie and i cant describe what it was.All i can say is that the movie was just okey, bit boring and lame.

People say the movie is progressive but isn't it a bit racist to pretend their are no Indian or other South Asians in Singapore? Apparently the movie is doing terrible there because there are no South Asian characters and pretends only Oriental Asians live there.

The film got the largest opening in Singapore for a rom com ever. What do you mean it's "doing terrible there"? And wnose said is true: The wealthiest people in Singapore (and most Southeast Asian countries BTW) are ethnic Chinese. Indians and Malays are the working class, as depicted in the film. This is a film specific about "Crazy Rich" Singaporeans, not a documentary about all Singaporeans.

Sorry but I REALY hated Crazy Rich Asians , annoying characters, and the same old, tired, cliched Pretty Woman meets My Big Fat Asian Wedding screenplay AND I"M HALF CHINESE!!
I hated it so much I asked for a refund and got it.
Very stereotypical depictions of Asians and the script is the same as every other Hong Kong romantic comedy!
The audience mostly fell asleep because the pacing was far too slow.
If this had starred an all white cast with the same script I guarantee it wouldn't have the same reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
BlackKKlansman was a FAR BETTER movie this year!

steveforprez03 asking for a refund after you sat through the movie? That's a real jerk move. The theater sells you a seat, not the movie. Not their fault you didn't enjoy it. You picked it, you should stick with it.

Keith MacDonald you are absolutely wrong. You don't eat a whole plate and decide you don't like it and ask for a refund, same with movies. You can't watch the whole movie than ask for a refund at the end of it. That's fucking ridiculous.
