The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 science fiction film which tells the story of a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to warn its leaders not to take their conflicts into space, or they will face lethal consequences.
It stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin. Supporting cast includes journalist Drew Pearson. The movie was adapted by Edmund H. North from the story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, and directed by Robert Wise. The score was written by Bernard Herrmann and is notable for its use of a theremin.

ONE OF THE GREATEST SCIENCE FICTION FILMS OF ALL TIME.TIMELESS AND BEAUTIFUL.Great cast.Michael Rennie as Klaatu,Patricia Neal,Hugh Marlowe,Billy Gray, and Lock Martin as the awesome robot Gort. This is one of my favorite sci-fi classic films. What I loved about this film was that here was an alien that was'nt a menace as the world looked on him as but he was peaceful and warned the earth against the threat of warfare among themselves.Gort was one of the best robots in sci-fi.KLAATU BARADA NIKTO!

Still one of the greatest Sci-Fi films ever made. The original was a 90 minute, B-movie. It will be interesting to see how much more content they add to the story in the remake. For sure, they will never rival Bernard Herrmann's music which gave this film so much of it's drama, mystery, & emotional weight.

Yes, you can't imagine the impact this film had when it came out at the height of the McCarthy period. Many of the great films of all time were made before 1960, and the intelligence of the filmmaker is always more important than effects. I think the problem is that many young people have not been exposed to classic older films, which they ignore because the lack the contemporary technological glitz. That is sad.

One of my earliest childhood memories is of watching The Day the Earth Stood Still when I was five years-old; my mother clued me in as to my having to see this. The joke, in part, as it pertains to the film being in black and white, is on me. We only had a black and white set ("with glorious shades of grey" as Mom would say) in the early '60s so I didn't know the difference for years. I was hooked from the first viewing; the film was already ten years-old at that point but as a five year-old I found Gort spellbinding. That feeling rubbed-off on me over the years as the first appearance of Gort, in conjunction with Bernard Hermann's chilling musical cues, still raises the hair on the back of my neck.

Back in 1951 they came out with this movie "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Every Saturday morning my brother and I would watch cartoons and inevitably after the cartoons they would show a movie and more often then not it was this movie. Now in the movie there is a scene where the spaceman walks into the scientists laboratory and there on a large black board with this huge mathematical equation. Its got all the scientific symbols and lots of numbers, it's huge. Well the spaceman looks at it, erases part of it and puts in his equations "There that's the right answer"..it's the secret to the universe! I was hooked! Every time I saw the movie I would copy part of the equation on a piece of paper, after all, IT WAS THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE!!! Fifth grade, Miss Kulla's class, I'm like what 9?..10?... I'm not paying attention and on a piece of paper I'm writing part of that equation that I memorized. In walks the principle, just checking out the class and he sees me just doodling. He walks over to me and asks "Let me see that." well it's fifth grade and he expects to pick up a note that says something like "Judy has Cooties". Instead he opens the paper and there is a physics equation for the secret of the universe, IN FIFTH GRADE! He walks up to Miss Kulla and I see them talking and he's pointing to me. Boy I'm in trouble now, they'll probably call my mom, mom will tell dad..oh man, not good. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the note and shows it to Miss Kulla. She does this, she looks at the note, looks at me, and drops her jaw. The next day I return to her class and they have moved my deck from the back of the room to right next to the teachers desk. Because she's got a kid that's going right from 5th grade to M.I.T. At first I was worried being right under the teachers nose but I soon found out it had it's advantages. Because from my new vantage point I could see right into her blouse. So ever since then I've been fascinated by science...you never know where exploration will take you.
P.S. You would think they would have asked me what the equation was, but they never did. movie. Now in the movie there is a scene where the spaceman walks into the scientists laboratory and there on a large black board with this huge ma

The main reason that this movie is still hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi flicks of all time has nothing to do with acting, and is barely related to plot. As with all good sci-fi, this film delivers a message that is intended to provoke thought in its viewers, and engage them mentally rather than simply tittilate them with so called 'awe inspiring' set-pieces of modern movies. Not to mention that for the 1950's, the effects in this film were cutting edge.

These producers have no respect or even knowledge of the originals. Make you own product and try to make it have the qualities to become an original. Please don't let them get there hands on the Maltese Falcon or The Bridge of the River Kwai.

I've watched the 1951 version. Though the effects are not so good but I really love the story and I think it is one the best sci-fi movies at those time, of course basis of comparison shouldn't be by the effects since we know the limitation in making film in the 50s. It should be by the quality of how it's being written and that makes up mind boggled in the end. It's great...It also makes me remember my late uncle who loves to watch it also.

It occurs to me now (duh!) the pivotal moment in the film is Patricia Neal's character swallowing her fear as she faces Gort. If she hiccups or coughs or forgets one syllable, she is fried to a crisp, and then what a different ending to the story as Gort goes about his rampage. Party over, oops, out of time...
My other realization is that Klaatu, knowing our potentially violent nature, didn't bullet-proof or protect himself in any way as he walked down the spaceship runway. Head scratcher...

A futuristic film with Michael Rennie as Klaatu come to Earth to warn humans against taking nuclear weapons into space. The cast conveys a sense of hometown America. The title derives from Klaatu's demonstration of power in shutting down Earth's electricity. There is poignancy in watching the army oppose advanced technology. Gort is the robot: "Klaatu barada nikto." At a time when UFOs were called flying saucers, Klaatu's is the prototype, landing on a baseball field in Washington, D.C. The second half of the 20th century emerged with movies contemplating ETs.

You must remember that NEWS Footage and what was early television footage was in black and white, as odd as it sounds to us, black and white looked more realistic to a 1950's audience. That's why fantasy sequence of Wizard of Oz is in color and the real world is in black and white.
