The Amonket gods might be lackluster but I'm quite happy with my Rhonas card. It's autographed by some obscure CZcamsr named Jumbo Commander, you've probably never heard of him.
I found Hapatra in a booster and used her to build an EDH deck that's all about putting -1/-1s all over everything and building up a huge army of deathtouch snakes. Right now it's my most hated deck among my friends.
Have to push on the Anointed Procession pickup. We've already seen a similar card in Parallel Lives rise in price over time to around $10. Procession will likely follow a similar slow climb, great suggestion DJ!
Yup! I think Anointed Procession is a easy pick for the same reason you mentioned. I pre-ordered mine for $1.25. I still can't believe the card was that low for pre-order! Also if you want a foil, I would not wait on getting one.
Green doesn't have that many more effects of this kind, but I see what you're saying. I could see it being more just for the fact that Amonkhet was not opened as much if I am remembering correctly. I know Hour of Devastation wasn't or had a lower print run.
I love that card but the flash on this means that it's a one card "i got you" combo whereas Ob Nix is on-board punishment or needs some help to ambush people
Oh crap! I forgot about Aven Mindcensor! Well my guess was off. Haha! Great picks again DJ! Gosh choosing picks for Hour of Devastation is hard! I think eighteen of the cards would make good picks! I have no idea what you'll pick DJ except for probably a couple of them, but here we go! This is my guess for DJ's picks for Hour of Devastation. The Scarab god Torment of Hailfire Mirage Mirror Razaketh, the Foulblooded Ramunap Excavator Neheb, the Eternal Hour of Revelation Hour of Promise Crested Sunmare Overwhelming Splendor Nimble Obstructionist Champion of Wits Thought about including Bontu's Last Reckoning Solemnity Fraying Sanity Endless Sands Uncage the Menagerie Driven to Despair Here's my picks for Amonkhet. 1: Cycle lands 2: Anointed Procession 3: Vizier of the Menagerie 4: Throne of the god-Pharaoh 5: Oketra's Monument 6: Manglehorn 7: Harsh Mentor 8: Archfiend of Ifnir
Hey Jumbo, I have been marathoning and loving your videos as I am just starting to play commander and a ton of your content is literally exactly what I have been looking for, so thank you! Your videos are great, I can't tell you how how nice it is to get such clear insight into all of the comparisons between cards you can include that I never knew about and all of the great game-breaking strategies you introduce. I am learning a lot! I was wondering if you are ever planning on doing a Commander Deck Tech featuring Chromium, the Mutable and a Commander Deck Tech featuring Kestia, the Cultivator? If not, think you guys may ever make a short video going over some generally good strategies and schemes to create with them? Keep up the great content, I'm taking notes! haha
Vizier of the Menagerie! So underrated, I love looking at the top card of my library at random times just to make my opponents go 'Ummm, what are you doing?'
Harsh Mentor? I gotta say I've LOVED that card in my commander decks! Just think about how many times people activate non-mana abilities of artifacts, creatures, and lands in our format. Making those effects also shock the person is just awesome, and really adds up over time.
Rhonas is expensive partially because he sees a lot of play in standard (not many of the cards on this list do), wait for rotation next month and I'm sure he'll go down a bit.
Jumbo Commander I know for a fact he's a win condition for decks like Druid Company Combo. Infinite mana you win with walking Balista or Rhonas. So it's definitely workable in modern
I picked up a set of Survival of the Fittest years ago for $35 a piece and run it in my Hapatra deck with Archfiend and it's amazing. Grab Archfiend, than grab Ivy Lane Denizen and pepper your opponents fields with -1/-1 counters, than do it again grabbing whatever after playing Denizen and give Hapatra a stupid amount of +1/+1 counters and if you've got Shizo out kill someone with Commander damage. I actually sat on Archfiend forever going "HOW DO I MAKE THIS WORK IN G/B!" when I had a Survival in my non-trade binder for years lmao. Sadistic Hypnotist can also work but making yourself discard 2 cards can be pretty bad.
Samut is very good. Shes my human werewolf tribal leader (because she is way better than Ulritch but he is good in the 99 because giving Samut +4/+4 is REALLY good and gives access to rule of law effect)
I lucked out getting him in a bundle I bought this summer. Freaked out when I pulled an invocation after getting him. Was my first invocation/masterpiece. Then in the last booster in the bundle was another invocation. I had to pinch myself.
Oh Samut. One of the strongest voltron commanders I've seen. It is so rare that you see her beeing played. White is especialy importand in the deck when it comes to cards like cho mano's blessing. Protect her, make her unblockable, kill someone with commanderdamege. Boardwhipe. Repeat.
My lgs had a $. 25 rotation cards sale with 20% off the total cost for a week. I got a hazoret, pair of okertra, a bontu, pair of kepnet, pair of rhonas for under $2.50 with discounts and taxes included. Lol
just a suggestion, but vizer of remedies is a great pick up being that it goes infinite with devoted druid. I believe she is only like .50 cents as well.
More EDH goodness from AKH: Dusk/Dawn - potential one-sided board wipe + recursion for small creature decks Commit/Memory - instant tuck for spells or permanents with windfall later in one card Pull from Tomorrow - scalable instant speed card draw with a discard outlet Liliana, Death's Majesty - recursion and graveyard synergy Never/Return - removal and graveyard hate By Force - almost as good as shattering spree and less color restrictive Nissa, Steward of Elements - PW with scalable loyalty that can manipulate your top-deck and cheat things into play
Jumping the gun, my picks for HOU: Angel of Condemnation - dies to removal but good utility Nimble Obstructionist - fixes card disadvantage of stifle & trickbind Torment of Hailfire - self-explanatory Neheb, the Eternal - already a staple Hour of Devastation - pretty good red board wipe that gets around indestructible Hour of Revelation - strictly better than Planar Cleansing which was already great Hour of Promise - tutor two non-basics, sometimes get zombies Mirage Mirror - just read the card Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign - because sphinxes Crested Sunmare - because horses Pride Sovereign - because cats Razaketh the Foulblooded - expensive but repeatable tutor Uncage the Menagerie - pretty good creature tutor in the right decks The Gods and Bolas - obvi The Deserts - all worth a look
re: Samut. How is it limiting to be able to play targetted removal like Sword to Plowshares in a 'Red/Green' deck?! I understand the mana is less consistent, but that isn't a 'limiting' factor as such. At least not how anyone I've heard discuss EDH before - when they talk about 'limiting', they're usually taking about 'the cards you can play'. When a color is added, this is LESS limiting to EDH.
ya I thought that was odd, I even thought maybe it was a joke? But I'm not sure. I have a Samut deck and I don't find it limiting at all, in fact several of the most powerful cards in my deck have white on them. I built it as mostly a green deck that splashes red and white. I play a lot of ramp and have zero problems with mana.
I think you can't cast it from your library then, the mindcensor is a replacement effect for searching your library so you actually do something else, i guess it works that way ?

Atraxa with Anointed Procession, the wurm, Hapatra, and the supporting counter cards from Amonkhet. Makes for a fun build. Purposefully good, but still purposefully casual.
I use Zur the Enchanter to tutor up Astral Slide (and then Copy Enchantment as a second Astral Slide). It's almost like Astral Slide is my secret commander.
Could do it with a graveyard-themed commander, particularly mimeoplasm. Use the stuff you discard for something! Mimey boi loves those big beefy creatures you cycled for 1.
Mr_Dragon those all work out fine. I just wanted something that focused on cycling and/or discard and had the effects specifically on the card, like Archfiend of Ifnir.
