    You hit it on the head. Almost all the pilots at my home airport fly by themselves the majority of the time. That includes at least 3 of my hangar row mates that own a 182, 205 and P210. All off them have expressed interest in getting rid of their gas guzzler's and getting something much cheaper and less complex (read... no more $6K annuals!). A friend has an A36 and he's getting ready to sell it for all the same reasons.
    I have an RV-12 and spend about 30% of my time by myself, but it's dirt cheap to operate and fun to fly! I was a cargo pilot for many years (Caravans, PC12's and TBMS), so I'm used to being by myself!

      It’s nice to hear I ain’t alone in dealing with this. But it is making me re-evaluate my next plane. I’m thinking something in the STOL family will probably be in my near future.

  • @TheBarzook
    @TheBarzook Před rokem +5

    You're right on with the family and friends. I have 2 sons (7-4) and they like short rides, but not more than that. I'm trying to avoid push aviation and flying down their throat, but I secretly hope they pick up the bug eventually! I still and fully enjoy flying all my myself as I'm a pretty low time pilot still (130 TT) so I still have a lot to learn so it's nice to not have too many distractions sometimes. That runway must be pretty challenging in a good crosswind, it's so narrow! JS from CYSC!

    • @DonatFlyingAdventures
      @DonatFlyingAdventures  Před rokem

      Ya I feel the same about forcing them. Nice to hear i’m not the only one lol. The runway is more challenging in the winter for sure. In the summer we have grass with a hard packed base on each side. So you do have some wiggle room.

    • @ChaseNickleson
      @ChaseNickleson Před rokem +1

      Definitely not the only one. Same experience when I jumped up from a two seater to a four, thinking my wife and two kids would go fly all the time. Reality is, it takes some time to acclimate to turbulence and heat, and my Cessna 172 isn’t quite fast enough to justify flying everywhere I thought we would. Plus I also don’t want to burn them out with negative memories in the plane. Thanks for the video and now I too know I’m not alone on this. Cheers!

    All of those have been my experience except the instructor thing. I've flown with 6 instructors so far and I'll be flying with one more coming up soon. And none of them have had an issue instructing from my airplane.
    I don't have a partner in my airplane. Maybe I should get one. 🤔
    The biggest way that I save money in my airplane is:
    1) I found an A&P that will work with me and let me do most of the work under his supervision. That's been fantastic.
    2) I have the mogas STC that lets me put ethanol free car gas in my airplane. And that saves me about $2/gallon compared to AVGAS.
    Question I have for you: How do you keep your craving for speed at bay? I love my little 140, but I'm feeling a huge desire to get speeds north of 120 mph.

    • @DonatFlyingAdventures
      @DonatFlyingAdventures  Před rokem +1

      For the instructor thing, I was more about finding independent instructors and not having absolutely to go through a flight school. That and having them just meet me directly at my plane.
      Those are some great ways to save money. I used to be able to run mogas as well, however the province of Quebec has now made ethanol free 91 octane a thing of the past. That has really cut into my savings but it's still cheaper then renting where I did my PPL.
      As for your question, I think I'm just getting old lol. I don't feel the need to feel those acceleration G's anymore. But saving time with a faster plane is in my futur plans.

  • @alk672
    @alk672 Před rokem

    I wish I saw this video before I started my training :) So far my experience has been vastly similar, which is why I'm not buying. Of course if you don't own it's much worse in terms of availability and long cross-countries. I was kinda surprised to find out that most people don't want to get into a tiny tin can and trust a dude who only started flying a year or two ago with their lives. Shocker.
    The only scenario that has worked out for me so far is pairing up with another pilot and flying long cross-countries, splitting the flying and the costs. Otherwise I'm mostly flying alone, it is what it is. General aviation doesn't mesh very well with most people's lives, let's be honest about it, which is why most people stop flying pretty much immediately after they've finished their licenses.

    • @DonatFlyingAdventures
      @DonatFlyingAdventures  Před rokem

      Agreed! For me I’ve had to modify my expectations and also my ownership goals have changed. I will probably end up with a small and fast 2 seater or a STOL in the near future.

    If you are looking for something to do with a family, get a boat. 35 feet minimum. Not cheap but similar to an airplane. Kids will like it until they are 13 or 14 years old. Unless you are going somewhere, a plane is useless. It is a means of transportation. A boat on the other hand, is a lot of fun while you are going somewhere AND a lot of fun when you get there.
