Story of Doddie’5 Dream | Interview with Bruce MacGregor | ScotlandShop On the Sofa

As part of our celebrations of Clan MacGregor this month we are delighted to welcome Bruce MacGregor, to the ScotlandShop sofa, a man with a multitude of talents, super talented fiddler and member of Blazin’ Fiddles, owner of wedding and festival venue Bogbain Farm, inspiration behind craft beer business MacGregor Bars, and BBC Radio Scotland presenter of Travelling Folk.
We hear the most amusing story of Bruce’s first fiddling lesson, his incredible teacher the great Donald Riddell CBE, and the eventual creation of the band Blazin’ Fiddles to showcase the regional fiddle styles of Scotland. I was intrigued to learn that fiddling styles are like accents …listen in for the full explanation.
And of course this led us to talk about the launch of the beautiful piece of music that is Doddie’s Dream, our joint love of rugby and mutual interest in raising funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and research into MND. Bruce shared the inspiration behind Doddie’s Dream, sparked by Doddie Aid and dubious cycling skills, and the many incredible folk musicians around the world who have made this a very special piece of music. Nicola Benedetti, Sharon Shannon, Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain, Skerryvore, Julie Fowlis, Jerry Douglas, Duncan Chisholm, Gary Innes & Breabach to name but a few. Now we just have to achieve the current aspiration for a Christmas number 1!
Of course we also have to delve into clan connections, the MacGregor tartan and Bruce’s Scottish heritage, with stories of childhood excursions to Rob Roy MacGregor’s grave and a fine picture of that same man on the wall behind Bruce throughout the interview.
