Join us on an exciting journey as we take you through the stunning renovation of a four-storey townhouse in Dalston, re-imagined and transformed into a bold and colourful bohemian party house.
The Clients: Zoe, Actor, and Benedict, Cinematographer
Meet Zoe and Benedict, the creative occupants of this property. Having previously collaborated with Zoe on her Hampstead apartment, we were thrilled to work with them again for this Dalston townhouse. Their dream was to combine two separate dwellings into one vibrant home, restoring the grandeur of the townhouse while infusing it with colour and character.
Design Ideas and Inspiration: A Blend of Styles
Drawing inspiration from mid-century Los Angeles and Italian mid-century design, we embarked on a journey to create a unique blend of East Coast and West Coast aesthetics. Zoe's thirst for colour and Benedict's cinematographic expertise influenced every detail, from lighting to furniture selection.
The Design Solution: Celebrating Existing Spaces
The basement underwent a total transformation, creating an open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge area that seamlessly connects to the garden. The upper floors, with their generous proportions, allowed us to celebrate existing rooms without major structural changes. Glass walls and doors added a modern touch, enhancing both light flow and separation between levels.
Colourful Palette: Immersive and Vibrant
Zoe's keen eye for colour resulted in a captivating palette for each room. From bright emperor yellow accents on the ground floor to moody downpipe grey in the master bedroom, every space tells a unique story. The top floor showcases a beautiful collection of warm and cool tones, creating a harmonious blend of neutral and bold.
Natural Light and Ventilation: Thoughtful Solutions
Manipulating natural light was crucial, especially in the basement. Full-width sliding doors and a strategically placed glass rooflight were designed to maximize light while maintaining control over overheating. The result is a space that feels bright, airy, and connected to nature.
Texture: Rhythm and Variation
Texture plays a vital role in Tonal Terrace. Exposed structural timbers in the ceiling and floor-to-ceiling balustrades create a play of rhythm and variation. Inspired by mid-century Californian properties, these design elements add depth and character to the living spaces.
Conclusion: A House with Many Moods
Tonal Terrace isn't just a house; it's a canvas of emotions. Zoe and Benedict find themselves exploring different corners based on their moods, thanks to the thoughtful design that combines functionality with atmosphere.
