  • The Clapton Portico in Linscott Road, Hackney has been through various transformations in its history. Starting life as an orphanage in 1821 it became the Salvation Army HQ after a cholera outbreak meant the orphans had to be relocated. The building was left unused for 25 years after the Salvation Army moved on in the 1970s until funding was raised to remodel it into a centre for adult learning. During this phase of the Portico's life, Clapton Girls' Academy had to move in while their site was undergoing construction work. Spiralling maintenance costs on this listed building once again took its toll and without a further injection of money to revive it the future was looking bleak. But a saviour has been found in the shape of the Lower Clapton Group Practice and the next chapter for the Portico is about to begin.
