MOT Test Day - Will it PASS? - 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

- The Day of Reckoning!!!
PART 58 of this series...It has all been building up to this day. The day I take the Rolls-Royce for the MOT to see if it is roadworthy.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 58 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
As someone who watched this series from the start and saw all the work you put in, I have a big smile on my face and am SO HAPPY for you Vince. Well done!
Not just passed the MOT. Passed with no advisories! Well done Vince.
What are advisories?
@@Waifu4Life Advisories are faults/issues noted by the tester that are not failures on the test but might lead to a failure in the future if not fixed.
@@marcusg2703 cool,. thx for explaining.
@@Waifu4Life Advisories ; Problems yet to bite you in the arse or items/wear/defect the tester found which may fail next time. Example; brake pad wear, corrosion, or lack of jam doughnuts left for the garage.
Well done, Vince. It's great to see all your hard work has paid off!
I am so proud of you, Vince. I have been watching you for years. I do not comment much. I have been going through a lot of physical and mental issues for the last few years. You and your positivity give me a smile and that I thank you for. Thank you for being you.
Best wishes to you in your difficulties. Keep strong.
We all find ourselves in the dark from time to time. The light is always visible somewhere. Keep searching for it. Vince will always drop in with the flashlight from time to time or maybe just the yellow mat.😂
Congratulations! You really earned that pass.
I'll be honest, when you first started doing the RR repair videos, I wasn't into it. I much preferred your electronics fix videos. Then the RR videos grew on me and I looked forward to watching them when they popped up on CZcams.
I have to be honest, I didn't think I would see the day. I've sat here with a smile on my face for the whole video. Well done Vince!
You've earned the joy of driving it Vince. Well well done.
RESULT! Congratulations Vince. This has been one of my favourite series on CZcams. Thanks for taking us on the journey with you! Please keep the minor fixes and maintenance videos coming.
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for the comment😎
I have watched every episode as soon as they were posted, with particular interest. This is because I bought an 89 Silver Spirit at almost the exact time as Vince. It is a wonderful car to own and drive, and as Vince soon found out, you get so many lovely comments. I get 17mpg which I think is very good considering the size of the engine and the weight of the car. I couldn't have been more pleased with the MOT pass. Well done Vince-you have worked so hard, virtually single handed-and I hope you enjoy every mile of driving her.
Thank you, really glad you are still enjoying the ownership👍
Ought to be scrapped. Your grandchildren will curse you for your frivolous emission of far too much CO2.
Awesome job Vince! I'm an HVAC tech and electronics nerd, which is why I started watching your channel. I am not "a car guy", but I really enjoyed this series... you take a diagnostic approach that I would every single day, but applied it to something I have no experience with.
Can't quite believe we made it! Well done Vince, you've done a fantastic job.
Kick down, check vacuum pipe to vacuum modulator on the side of the gearbox which I think is the GM400 Diaphragm goes soft, cost about £90 but cross reference it as the GM400 was used in all sorts of land barge, also change the o ring when fitting you can do this without dropping oil. Note (from memory) there is a cable actuated kick down on the throttle body with a very janky cable, this may need adjustment but check manual as the set up is counter intuitive. Temperature, quick check turn on heater if you have good heat you know the heads are wet also good turn on when in traffic and the temp is rising. fault either sender, thermostat or Mr Lucus !!!!!!!.
Hope this is helpful. Congratulations Vince.
Nice one Woffy, thank you👍
@@Mymatevince Good work vince, better than you expected so you can stop chasing perfection and start driving it. The car will improve with use and the paint will start shine even more. Headlights, leave a pouch of desiccant in the housing to stop condensation.
Some good news it seems Mr Lucus is happy however keep water off any electrics especially the relay box which I still have nightmares about. A touch of Vaseline on connectors helps keep the green death and Lucas blue smoke away. The fuel injection is from memory Bosh Ktronic design which is good but on old cars it is best to put a fresh fuel filter on and only use E5 petrol. Have you thought of an LPG conversion ?, works a treat on my V8's and not a difficult fit on the lumps you have.
Steering wheel ; Bakelite oxidises, polish with Brasso was off ALL residue then again finally finish with a Beeswax burnish. The wheel will improve with use. There is a special compound but I forget the name.
Lastly DON"T trust that jack or the jacking points. Get a trolly jack and stands, lift under the wishbones or subframe. The RR is a heavy Mumma and although those sills look sound they are old and if the jack punches through (and I know they do ? ) the car is scrap at the very least the doors won't shut.
Congratulations Vince a splendid job we have enjoyed your pain and joy.
L
Go go Vince! Let’s see it on the right side of the fence!
Been here since the start and honestly feeling a bit emotional for you. You’ve done the most amazing job. Well done Vince.
I'm delighted your RR passed the MOT. _and_ with zero advisories!! Well Done Indeed Vince!!
The Grey Poupon _is_ an essential piece of kit!
My Sliver Shadow II delivered 8mpg around town. 17mpg on the motorway. Use of B roads gave 10mpg.
You have no idea just how proud we are of you Vince, you came into this project with an open mind and took on every challenge. Many a better man would have given up but you stuck at it (even the rattle can paint job astounded me with how well it looked) Hopefully you get to enjoy the car now :)
2 years of joy watching this, awaiting the mot, passed! Enjoyed every moment, was there with you, what car next! Ha!
That MoT pass is testament to all your hard work.If the temperature gauge operates when you earth the sender wire then the sender is faulty which is an easy fix.
Thank you👍
Congratulations Vince. The MOT was never in doubt, mate! I've loved this series and so happy for you that the car is now something you can enjoy. Nice one.
Thanks Jon
Wow! Just wow! I think there were so many wow moments, but for me, the leather repair was the best. Wow!
After watching every video in the series it is fantastic to see the Rolls on the road. Well done Vince! 🙂
Absolutely loved this series, car looks great! Amazing job Vince!
Well done Vince! All your hard work has paid off.
Well done Vince, it looks genuinely suburb, and I've been a happy and grateful viewer of the series since the start. Thanks again.
I think it made everyone’s day when it passed the MOT. Knew you would do it. Congrats
Vince, I been here since the very beginning, you convinced me to fix my own pickup truck, thank you for being an inspiration Vince, Cheers
Absolutely incredible job Vince. I'm not sure whether a Rolls-Royce owner has ever put as much work into their car as you have.
As so many have already said, watched this series from day one and it’s been fantastic, such a lot of work went into this! Brilliant to see everything come to fruition. Well done MMV 👏🏻
This video brings me so much joy! What a journey it’s been. Didn’t think it would be 2 years worth of heart breaks and happy days! Cheers Vince. Truly smiling ear to ear to see this!
I’ve currently been awake for 33 hours and can’t seem to unwind, so, this is perfect timing for an upload. Thanks, Vince!
Well done Vince ,all that hard work has paid off. You look so proud of what you have done.
Vince, I have the biggest smile on my face! Thank you. What a brilliant result for all of your hard work and struggles. you must be incredibly proud. I have watched every episode and loved every minute. Thank you for creating such genuine, humble content that the 'normal guy' can relate to. Keep up the great work and can't wait to see what comes next.
I totally thought you bit off too much taking on this project but WOW you really accomplished something truly special. Very, very impressive!
Watched this from the start of the series, fair play to you for stepping completely out your comfort zone and learning alot of new things in this, you should be proud of what you've achieved 👏
4:01 lmfao oh my god I remember those commercials 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You've earned it Vince!
Even just watching the series from the start to now, it really feels rewarding getting to see it on the road!
Honestly I am a bit surprised it passed on it's first try, but you deserve it with all the hard work you've put into it!
It's a beautiful machine! And now it's in far better shape and more functional than when you first got it.
Really look forward to see your videos of continuing to repair things here and there.
Your videos are all really enjoying to watch!
Congrats Vince! I was straight up nervous when you showed the MOT papers. So happy it passed. Well deserved.
That's amazing news. Well done!
My Dad used to work at Rolls-Royce in Crewe. And he was with Quality Control in ‘88.
Who knows… maybe he signed off on that car?
Vince has a nice example there, the underbody and side rails collected water so any winter work killed them. I think this one has been garaged. Your Dad work at a time when the line were proud to work on a RR. I am sure he sat in this car.
What a job and skill your dad had, the crème de la creme of quality control, best in the world imo.
My dad was a rolls-Royce toolmaker at park ward for Mulliner. I remember his retirement photos of him in all of the cars they were building at the time. Just love this channel.
@@MrAsBBB My Dad started as a toolmaker in the Tool Room.
Your fathers are legends, their work would have been the ultimate in craftsmanship I believe, can’t tell you how much I respect their heritage, reflected in the beautiful cars still on the roads many years later.
That's a great ride, I bet it'll live for another 40 years
Well done and congratulations, Vince! You now own a Roller you can truly be proud of.
Congratulations buddy! There truly is nothing (so far) you can't repair and/or improve. Big thumbs up!
To adjust the parking brake start the engine and then shift into neutral. You then switch the engine off if you desire, you will still have the resistance from the diff but you won't be fighting the gearbox etc.
You don't drive in a Rolls Royce you waft 😄 The whole car is designed for the back seat passenger in mind as many owners got their driver to drive so it's all about comfort with handling and agility not being of concern hence the really lower tyre pressures. Increasing them will help handling and fuel economy at the expense of comfort.
It's basically like driving a big sofa where you wallow around corners with the slush-o-matic gearbox changing gears.
Need to get that temp gauge working ASAP before the engine cooks and it's all over.
Congratulations on getting it back on the road Vince!
Thank you Adam, you have been a huge help over the last 2 years. Hopefully you will stick around and maybe help out on another project in the future 👍😎 The water temp might be the next video I do on this.
@@Mymatevince I will do my best Vince, in regards to the coolant temperature gauge not working, once you find where the coolant temperature sensor is on the engine if it has one wire going to it you need to ground the wire by connecting it to the chassis or battery negative. With the ignition on the temperature gauge should then read hot with the wire grounded.
If it does then the coolant temperature sensor is at fault. If it does not then the gauge or wiring is at fault
@@APSuk2 Thanks Adam, I'm looking forward to doing this as the next job. Apparently it does have a sensor, just under where the thermostat is. It might be as simple as a corroded wire. Or it might end up being a blue mat video if the gauge itself is faulty. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday 👍
So pleased it passed and so pleased there’s still a few bits to fix. I’m still wearing your Rolls Royce t-shirt with pride. Get well soon Mrs Vince.
Thanks so much P5ychoFox!!!!
Finally, the ROLLS HAS COME BACK TO NORTHWEST LONDON! Excellent series mate - Loved EVERY step of it - and congrats for bringing this beauty back to life BY YOURSELF. Have a beer man - you've earned it
Thank you
Well done Vince.Watched this from the beginning.Great achievement
Thank you
Congratulations Vince! The car looks great, sounds well, and it’s been a fascinating series to follow! I hope Ratty continues to bring a smile to your face, for many years.
I’m sure there’ll be hiccups & headaches, as old cars tend to test us, but just remember how far you’ve brought that old girl!
I’d love to see her, and I suppose you too, if you take her on a tour of the UK! Regardless of whether you tell any of us or not, you should bring her up to Blackpool. 👊🏼
Well done Vince, been watching the series for a while now, absolutely stoked for passing the MOT with no failures, keep up the great content!
Thanks Ryan 😎
Glad I had notifications on, couldn't wait for this one
The car looks stunning. Thinking back over a year you have done an amazing job.
Well done. I'm very jealous
I have been watching from the first until today! You have provided much inspiration during this time in restoring my 1981 Corniche. Now, it's finished, I bought today a 1968 Fixed-Head Coupe! The journey continues!
I just Googled the 1968 fixed head coupe, what a beauty!!!!
Fantastic work done with such unrelenting enthusiasm Vince. Thanks for sharing the journey 🙏
Oh boy here we go.
Will you be restoring a Mansion to go with the Rolls next? 😉🤷♂️
I own a 1975 Bentley which is more or less the same size as a Silver Spirit. I moved home last year and the first job in my new house was to lengthen the garage so the car would fit. That cost more than I have spent on maintaining the car in the 12 years I have owned it, but was worth every penny. My new garage is wonderful , it's now 21ft long and 14ft wide. When thinking about buying an old Rolls or Bentley it's important that you have somewhere dry to keep it.
Well done vince you earned that pass, you have put so much time and effort into each job, even when things went wrong you never gave in,I look forward to seeing the next video
I had no doubts the car will pass the mot. Job well done Vince👏👏👏
0:33 that has got to be the most piddly sounding pressure washer i have ever heard in my life lol.
Just remember to turn the engine off when filling it with fuel or it will gain on the pump 😂 well done Vince!
Hahahaha, never ending!!!
Thank you Vince for not only bringing us along in the journey but actually finishing it!
You inspired me to pick up a black on black 1984 silver spur thanks to your videos it gave me the final encouragement to take on these overwhelming cars
Without much references (besides old manuals and forums) your videos will be beneficial for future Rolls Royce owners
Thank you also to all the supporters along the journey
Seeing this car on the road again operating beautifully brings a smile to my face😊
Black on black sounds lovely. I think black would be the best colour for these cars. Congrats and thanks for watching 👍
Congratulations Vince on all your hard work on this car! It looks like it came right off the showroom floor! This entire series was like a major movie, full of happy moments, sad moments, frustrations. But now to see the Silver Spirit on the road is a testament to your hard work and dedication. Drive safely.
Thank you 👍👍👍
I cheated I checked the reg on the last video 🤣🤣
Me too LOL
Me 2
WHAT A RESULT! All of your hard work paid off. Take me out in it soon!
Will do, cheers for watching!
Well done Vince, really impressed it's passed first time and with no advisories! So pleased for you that you've finally got it to a presentable state, enjoy it!
The whole series was worth it for the thumbnail alone ! Brilliant 😍

Simply wonderful. This series has been a great journey.
Congratulations what a magnificent achievement Vince. You have saved a great British car. Re potholes, they don’t want people driving, that’s the agenda.

Congratulations Vince. What an epic load of problems you have overcome but the endresult is beautifull. Enjoy your ride and thanks for this series.
Congratulations Vince, it looks fantastic. Paint looks great, no need to get a professional respray. The hard work you put in got it past the MOT in the end. I watched every episode of this, it was a great project and the two years has flown by.
Watched every episode of this project and I'm truly amazed. Well done, mate. Hats off!
That was propper suspense waiting for that MOT result! Congratulations to you Vince. Thoroughly deserved.

Congratulations Vince! What a fantastic achievement, well done.
Well done Vince!! I'm so pleased for you. You thoroughly deserve that pass with all the hard graft you've put in. Time to kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labours. Great work.
7:54 Sweet baby Jesus. I thought the $200/2 year extortion racket at my DMV was bad.
Watched this series since your introduction and enjoyed every single episode of it. The Car really came out beautiful and the MOT Pass is really deserved!! Well done Vince :)
Thanks Gruu 😎
I’m so happy that your patience, positivity and hard work were rewarded in the end!! Sure it will cost you thousands of gas money hahaha but I do hope you’ll enjoy the rides in it, you deserve it!!
I do love a story with a happy ending. Well done Vince! Thoroughly entertaining.
it feels so great to finally see it on the road. I'm glad that it passed the MOT !

Congratulations, your hard work and dedication paid off 🎉
Congrats @Mymatevince! What an accomplishment and I can't wait to see the road trip!
Congratulations, been watching since the beginning. Thanks for taking us along
Absolutely fascinating series. You have so much patience with a car that many would have just scrapped - now it's a thing of joy once again. Thanks so much for making the videos.
Congrats. Nice work. Have watched it off and on since you got it. What a transformation!!!!!!
2 years!!! Didn't realise it was so long. The car looks fantastic. Well done.
Congratulations ...there's no better feeling than restoring and getting an old iconic combustion engine motor back on the road.I'm 57 now so I love the great motors of the 80s or 90s for me thats now vintage....was a real delight too to see you sharing that first drive with the rest of your family . Thats really what its all about Vince. Great video great channel .
Well done, there is no better feeling than getting a MOT pass after doing all the work over a long period of time, all you have to do now is enjoy it...
Fantastic work, Vince. I'm proper proud of you. It's kind of bittersweet that this series is coming to an end. I hope you'll do another one in the future. Maybe a Cessna? Never say never! Stranger things have happened ;)
A hard earned positive test result, CONGRATS !!
It's so good to see you happy finally driving this car after so much effort. Congratulations for the result and thanks for all the good content!
Wish I could give you a thousand thumbs up on this - it’s been a great series to watch and you did an amazing job Vince - BRAVO!👏🥳🎉
Well done Vince for seeing this one through. I’ve watched every instalment. Hats off to you for doing the bodywork and paint too 👍
Yesss!!!! Vince, I think this has been the day I most anticipated all year! From one occasionally bumbling DIY mechanic to another: Cheers my friend.
Thanks John
I've watched this series from part 1. Great to see it out to the final instalment. Fantastic.
