Why I chose this 39.7" 5K2K Ultrawide Display (ft. Lenovo P40w-20)

  • Upgraded to a 39.7” 5K2K ultrawide display - the Lenovo ThinkVision P40w-20.
    This is a 21:9 aspect ratio 2500R curved ultrawide display with support for Thunderbolt 4, and a built-in KVM (or more like a KM since the hardware button only switches USB). But the story didn’t start with this Lenovo display - I actually bought a HP Z40c first, but it came defective. Watch on to see what happened.

    Hello. A few weeks ago I wanted to update my LG 38UC99C-W and my first option was always LG, then there was HP and finally DELL, but in my country the DELL brand is also very expensive. Then one day while checking my email and not intending to buy anything, I saw an ad for a Lenovo webcam. Clicking on that ad took me to the official page of Lenovo Colombia and while I was watching that ad out of pure curiosity, I managed to see something that looked like a promotional monitor in a very small corner. When I read that it was a P40W-20 5K2K which I was completely unaware of and that it was also on sale, my world changed and lit up. It was 7pm and there was a 30% discount that would end that last night at 8pm. So, my mind reacted immediately and I bought it without a second thought. I ended up paying half of what the 40WP95C-W would have cost me. They gave me a 40-month warranty and I received it the next day at my house. I think you can imagine how happy I am. Kind regards from Bogotá.

      Unfortunately I sold my 2018 MacBook Pro a few months ago for work and currently have it plugged into a Windows 11 PC and an RX 6800. The image looks great. Regarding your question, it is well known to everyone that Windows handles text scaling to native resolutions of any monitor much better than Apple, because when I had my Macbook connected to a DELL 32” 4K monitor I also suffered a lot in that regard. Having this Lenovo on a PC at 5120x2160, all text looks perfect at 100%, 125%, 150%, 175% and 200%, with no shadows or weird effects. But what really impressed me the most is that I did several calibrations with X-Rite ColorMunki and in my tests it exceeded the advertised DCI-P3 of 98% reaching 99.8% and in sRGB my measurement was 123%. The contrast is advertised as 1000:1 but my tests were 1285:1 so the blacks look deeper than I expected. The viewing angles are excellent because when viewing the monitor from the extreme sides, I don't notice any color drift towards yellow, green or red like you would on any other IPS display. I have connected it to an Asus laptop with USB-C video output and it works perfectly through the Thunderbolt 4.0 port that this monitor has. The user manual indicates that this screen is compatible with HDR10 and although in the Windows configuration it does not appear as certified for this purpose, I must say that HDR works wonderfully. I have measured the brightness at 350 Nits with SDR and at 510 Nits with HDR activated. The only bad thing about this screen is that the advertised 75hz works with stutter, as this is apparently a factory overclocked frequency, so you have to set it to 60hz. This is a well-known problem in forums like Reddit, where it was reported as false advertising, but at 60Hz the image is perfectly smooth for me, although it is not a monitor for gamers. It doesn't have speakers, but that's not a problem either since I have a pair of PreSonus monitors that sound great. Any other questions you have, I will gladly answer them. Greetings.

    Hi Kale, thanks for making this video. Been using Xiaomi 34" 1440p display for a year and really like the 21:9 ratio for movies and multiple browser windows. I wish it was slightly bigger though. A 1440p Monitor is to Slim...not big enough to have a good gaming feeling ( for me at Last).
    So this Monitor is absolutly perfect for gaming in 1440p and 2160p.
    I use a GTX 3080 TI ( payed 2 years for it) and i would realy like to use a Monitor this size. ( ..not rich enough) for MSFS 202 or Nascar Heat 5...or for other games.
    Yeah 60 HZ is enough.

    So, over a YEAR after you got this monitor there are still only these panels on the market at this resolution. I ordered one through Lenovo in November last year and it is finally on its way in February 2024. Can you believe those supply chain delays? I suppose it's not that bad - considering I have been waiting for FPGA hardware for over 12 months due to supply chains! Anyway, thank you for your review. It's basically the ONLY review for this monitor - anywhere! These Lenovo monitors seem to be rare as hen's teeth. I was sold by the same things that got you - resolution, thunderbolt, kvm, ergonomics. Also, Lenovo pricing for pro accounts is quite aggressive, so it's much cheaper than the equivalent LG, HP, or DELL - at least in Australia.

    I'm looking into an Ultrawide for my home office use and am in tech sales. I was wondering if I understood one of the features you explained about the ability to split the display. For example, if I am using a PowerPoint slide deck and presenting, can I have the deck on one side of the screen and my notes on the other side of the screen so they are not visible to the audience? Also, I like to have multiple windows visible at the same time...SalesForce, Excel, email, browser, ticket system, etc. My ideal setup would allow me to have 6 windows on the computer screen and one on my laptop. When considering the above types of applications what do you feel is the maximum number of windows you could comfortably have open on this monitor at the same time and the viewing size remains useful?

    • @kalestarler
      @kalestarler  Před 8 měsíci

      If you are talking about sharing slides over a Zoom / video call, yes, it can be done. I don't use split screen though, I continue to use it as a single full monitor display. But in Powerpoint, I have 2 open windows, 1 for the slideshow 1 for the presenter view. And over Zoom, I only share the slideshow window.
      I did 6 full 1080p windows before, but it didn't last very long. Nowadays I have only a maximum of 3 full-view windows, but many windows open but overlapping. I found having all 6 in full-view rather limiting, I actually want a much larger viewport when working on spreadsheets, slides, etc. In Windows, I'm using PowerToys FancyZone to play around with the window management. Feel free to keep trying different layouts to find what works best for you.
      Hope that helps!

    Hi, great video, very informative while being light & witty. Regarding the KVM (or ekVM) function that you mention @10:10 how well does this have been working for you so far? Do you press the physical button (on screen) to switch between the 2 systems or/and the software options (i.e. double shift on keyboard or double mouse clicks)? I have been reading for a lot of complaints. Some state that the KVM is not working properly and you have to go through a process of over 10 button presses on the screen and a combination of softkey routines to actually make the transition. Thanks

    • @kalestarler
      @kalestarler  Před 8 měsíci

      I don't use the keyboard shortcuts for KVM switching. Although for my workflow, I don't really switch actively during the day anymore, usually it's Mac-only for a whole stretch, or PC-only with my Macbook open on the side. In that case, the moment you pull away one source, it switches to the other source automatically. Then I use the monitor buttons mostly to switch the USB devices over to Thunderbolt (when I connect my Macbook again)

Although to be honest, I've had a few arms/mounts purchased over the past few years, so I can't be certain whether those risers originally came with this wall mount or one of the others. LG has one, exactly what you are looking for. The original 5k2k display on the market was an LG 34" released sometime back

      @@kalestarler do you know the model by any chance? I was looking on all sites, including official LG and couldn’t find what I need. Thanks!

      @@SergoSS79 Ohhhh, just realized that after you pointed it out. I thought it was curved lol. At 34 inches 5k2k, a flat screen doesn't sound very ergonomic 🤔

    Does anyone of you guys know how many cm is the width and the height of the screen without bezel?

    • @kalestarler
      @kalestarler  Před rokem

      Without bezel, height about 39cm and width about 92cm. Note that it is a curved display still

      @@kalestarler Thank you for your response, it means a lot. May I ask another question? I noticed that you did not use the audio jack port to connect the speakers, which looks very neat. Leaving the pop-down open under the monitor can make the setup look messy. Could you explain how you connected the speakers to the monitor without using the audio jack port?

      Nope, but they had serious supply chain issues. Finally managed to get that sorted out and are shipping them again after a few months (!) (as of Feb 2024).
