Instead of one's seeing Rihanna as the villain because of her not wanting to love the woman back as she wants her to, this should humanize her because she is not committing a misdeed by leading the woman on by telling her that she loves her or that she wishes to be hers. She is letting her know how she feels. She is letting her know that there is no romantic love between them on her part. The love is not reciprocal on Rihanna's part. Rihanna isn't the bad party here (that is not to suggest that the other one is, however).
Though it may hurt she who loves Rihanna, at least she can never say that she was led along by her. She was always honest with her about the lack of romantic feelings for her.
