  • In this video, we attempt to repair two Sega Master Systems and a Sega Master System game for Tom and Laci from Do You Nerd.
    At MoGameCon 2019, I had a rather embarrassing encounter with Tom and Laci from Do You Nerd. When I ran into them, I called them Gaming off the Grid, and if you're familiar with Gaming off the Grid you know precisely what kind of an insult that was. We've maintained a friendship since then, even with my stupidity, and I saw an opportunity to help them out recently.
    Tom had mentioned that they had received a Sega Master System Model 2 from a friend in the UK, however it was not working. I told them to send me the system and I will take a look at it for them, even potentially installing a composite output mod into it. So they boxed their system up, and sent it my way. In addition, they also sent me an original Sega Master System and a game that they were having some issues getting to work.
    From the box, I got video output and power from their model one Master System, a very good sign. I could not get it to read any cartridges, so that told me that I really needed to open it up to try to clean the system itself. Their copy of Miracle Warriors would not read on my system or theirs. That told me I needed to clean that too! Finally, I tested out their model 2 Master System, and could not get anything out of it at all. Unlike the original model Master system, the model 2 does not have a power indicator for when it is turned on, so this one would be a long shot for me to get working again.
    Getting Miracle Warriors up and running was fairly simple. I used my traditional cleaning methods, 1Up cleaning cards and Brite Boy, and after just a few minutes of cleaning and polishing I was able to put the game in my personal master system, and it worked perfectly! This repair was off to a great start!
    Up next it was time to clean out the model one Sega Master System. After just a few minutes, I was inside the system and able to check out the condition of everything on the PCB, and the cartridge connector as well. 1Up card does not make a system cleaner for the Sega Master System, so I had to get creative. The Sega Genesis cartridge connector is actually slightly wider than the Master System, so that one would not work. The Super Nintendo cartridge cleaner, however, was slightly narrower and I was able to use that. After a few minutes of inserting and removing the system cleaner from the cartridge slot, I hooked it up to my power supply and HD Retrovision cables, and put in their copy of Miracle Warriors. We were two for two, their system played perfectly.
    The final system up was the Sega Master System 2, and one of the curveballs for this system is the fact that it is a PAL system. Unfortunately, my voltmeter recently died on me and I have not been able to replace it, so I knew I was behind the curve on being able to get this fixed. I used the same technique with the Super NES 1Up card to try to clean the connector slot, and I pulled out a ton of crud. No matter what I attempted, however, I could not get any life out of their Master System 2.
    Tom did inform me that he was unsure if the system ever worked in the first place, so at least I know I didn't break anything further. Getting their original Master System and their game working was definitely awesome, I just really wish I could have gotten their second Master System to working as well. It's a neat system, and a neat part of Sega's history, I just really wish it had more than RF outputs!

    A little late but, if you find a PAL version in future I’d recommend doing further checks. Usually bulletproof, at least the inbuilt should have run. I’d hazard a guess it’s due to being tested on an NTSC tv. From memory they can be hooked up to NTSC but are on a different channel no, and won’t appear in proper colour sync when you do tune in. Correct me if this was all checked off camera.

    Ha ha-that intro was great!! Definitely probably the best mistaken identity we’ve had if compared to GOtG for sure! Lol
    Nice quick run down of the SMS2 history. Also, of course I spent the big bucks on Wal-Mart bag packing-hey-you can even KEEP that one, fyi.
    Again, really, really appreciate you going over these. I was pretty excited for you to check out the PAL SMS2 as I thought it would be fun to look over from a tech point of view.
    Weird that Miracle Warriors didn’t work immediately in your system as I’d just gathered some footage of it via the Game Gear attachment, but I know a dirty cart can simply be finnicky at times regardless. I really like seeing how much of a difference Bright Boy makes. I like the info on the RF shield too, nice! Love that ABBA looking opening screen of Miracle Warriors. LOL
    SNES tip for cleaning the cart slot is great-thank you!
    Really is a bummer that SMS2 couldn’t be brought back to life, but we did know as it shipped that it may just be a shelf piece. Definitely stoked just to have a working SMS again because like you said, it really is a great system with some really solid games-it’s so fun having “new” 8-bit offerings to try out.
    Great video and thanks so much Gary!

    A Dead Sega Master System 2? I doubt, its one game console built to stand a nuclear assault, that console on the video has Sonic built in not Alex Kidd and i bet you didnt open the lid of the rf box and sprayed contact cleaner inside, i have saved one of these that was left outside for decades and all i did was remove LOTS of rust and garbage and it worked as new as you can check on my latest video, Sega Master System was build to last a millennium!

    • @bluegiger
      @bluegiger Před 2 lety +1

      I kept thinking: The 7805! The first thing to check. Okay, even without a DMM to confirm voltages. A 7805 costs $1 and that's if you pay too much. Nice work on the RF modulator clean-out. I'm only getting into fixing them now so that's a neat one to keep in the quiver of tricks.
      The Master System 2 will outlive the cockroaches ;)

    Hello, I know this video is almost 4 years old but I was wondering if you tried getting a composite signal from the Sony IC inside the sega master system II. Usually ntsc tvs don’t pick up pal rf signals so I thought it would be a good idea to try it out next time!

    Do you only recommend bright boy for cleaning the cartridge contacts? Or is there a cheaper option that will suffice?

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  Před rokem +1

      First go with Isopropyl Alcohol, it will clean most of the gunk off cartridges. From there, no, I do not recommend anything else. Yes, it's not cheap, but it will last a very long time and clean a lot of games. How we came upon using Brite Boy was as a cleaner for sealed RC electric motors. See, for some motors you could open them up, clean the commutators, turn the commutator on a lathe to resurface it, and put in new brushes. Other motors are what are called a closed endbell design, they're completely sealed and you can't get inside to maintain them. Well, one of the racing series I competed in used spec Sealed Endbell motors, and the more you ran them the more carbon built up on the Commutators, the more the brushes developed a glaze, and the performance would suffer. What we found was Brite Boy cleaned and restored the face of the commutator, de-glazed the brushes, all while IMPROVING current flow, the motors were more efficient, and they made more power. We also found that Brite Boy didn't get stuck between the commutator and brush, so it didn't continue to pit or otherwise affect those surfaces. So when I say I recommend Brite Boy, I've been using it for over 20 years now and it is dyno tested!

    • @mwpahl38
      @mwpahl38 Před rokem

      @@RoXolid I appreciate the detailed response! I am familiar with motors, and the motor design you speak of. I'm feeling nostalgic as of late, so I've been breaking out my old systems and getting them going again. I just ordered and replaced my 72 pin connector on my NES, and I'm still having a lot of issues getting the cartridge to seat correctly to play. I've cleaned the contacts of some of my games with isopropyl, but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
