B&O 6 chime on WM 734 blasting through the snow at Trimble Rd.AVI

  • This is a video that I shot with my digital camera of 734 with my B&O 6 chime on it. Sorry about the poor video quality. I loaned the RR my whistles when they were supposed to go down to Petersburg, WV for the rail fest and operate on B&O rails. Sadly CSX denied them, but happily the railroad still used my whistles. Most of the recordings from 2010 are of the whistle before some adjustments were made to it to make it sound right. Yeah, it sounded unique before, but now it sounds AWESOME thanks to Kevin! The railroad also used my B&O 3 chime on occasion which was already "locked in" sound wise and really sounded great as well.
    Check out SRR7312 video of 734 with the B&O 3 chime:

    Please continue to support the RR with your ridership and donations. And thanks for the compliments on the whistles!

    I wish I could fully convey the significance of this whistle! My father's parents lived in Defiance, Ohio. I was 3 then 4 in 1955 and 1956. There was a regularly scheduled Eastbound peddler freight that would enter Defiance around 1:00 in the afternoon, hopefully after the departure of the Westbound Shannondoah, to pick up and set out cars in the small yard by FC tower. Almost always, it would be a class Q4b Makado , with this whistle!
    Grandma lived about 5 blocks from the tracks. I could hear all the noise of backing up and going forward as they switched out cars. And then, there was that whistle.... Screaming as they left town for Willard, Ohio. Oh , to go back to that time again!!

    Note that this whistle was used on the Q3 Mikados, the P7 "President" class Pacifics and the S-series 2-10-2 (Big Sixes). The three-chime whistle was used on the other 4-6-2's and other B&O steam power, except most of the shop-made T3 Mountains, other freight engines, a few switching engines and articulated locos such as the EM-1, which carried a Nathan single-note hooter, which sounded like the C&O long bell hooter, but a half-semitone higher.

      Already well aware of that. The 6 chimes can be found on early power on a "straight" mount bowl where in "super power" days, they were on the side mount bowls on the steam dome. Evidence of this is in "Q", B&O Power, The B&O books put out by Morning Sun and others. I wrote an article for Horn and Whistle magazine on B&O whistles several years ago. I don't have a copy of it to tell you what issue. I might have also done an article for the B&O RRHS publication "The Sentinel".
      As for the EM-1 whistle, it is a stock NATHAN plain bell. It measures the same as other NATHAN plain bells i.e. the NATHAN plain whistle on the C&O 1604 and others. Pitch can be influenced by whether it is blown on superheated steam, saturated steam, atmospheric conditions, distance between the bell and the bowl as well as whether or not there was one of the "steam deflectors" mounted on the bowl (EM-1's never had deflectors nor were the bowls cast with the tabs for mounting the deflectors).
      A rare bird to find is one of the BR&P 5 chimes that were left on the locomotives when the B&O acquired them. (odd that they were kept on when the B&M T-3's didn't have them unless B&M removed them before shipping) It is a top lever design. I have a record of one somewhere in my collection. They are decent sounding.
      Occasionally, you may also stumble across one of the "Button top" "tumor top" 3 or 4 chimes (there were both). These were holdovers from the CH&D.
      I also did an article on PRR whistles for the PRR Technical and Historical Society publication "The Keystone".

      @@whatdoidonext2234 Imagine, for the moment, you are 4 or 5yrs old. You are visiting your grandparents in Defiance, Ohio in 1956 in the summer. The double track mainline of B&O's Chicago Division Garrette Subdivision is 5 blocks away. It's supper time. Grandma calls for you to come to supper, and then you here the sound of this whistle coming hard and fast from the West. It's "Chicago 98" a daily hotshot Eastbound for Pittsburgh. Do you stay? Or do you go to supper??
      That was me in 1956 and 1957.

    • @whatdoidonext2234
      @whatdoidonext2234 Před 4 lety +1

      the 4500 wore a standard B&O 3 chime. Sadly, her whistle was torched off at the steam dome, so the nipple would have to be removed before another whistle could be fitted. After looking through "Q", the B&O steam finale books and numerous other photos, the only variance in whistles were locomotives from Alton in which they carried a "button top" three chime or "button top" 4 chime. K&L trainz have it ALL wrong. But, that is no different than IHC or AHM slapping a B&O or FEC logo on what is clearly a WABASH or NYC caboose. They are not after accuracy, they are after dollars.

    #734 sounds better with its Hancock 3 chime whistle. With this whistle if you hear it in the distance you would think SP #2472 was comming only to see #734 on the train. A different whistle makes it sound like a different locomotive. I wonder what #1309 will sound like

      1309 would have a single note hooter whistle (which it and the rest of its class had, along with the H8 Alleghenies) that sounds like a Caledonian-style hooter.

    • @alexpaumen3937
