Junot Diaz

The JCCSF kicked off the 2013-14 season with the wondrous Junot Diaz in conversation with Sean San Jose. Junot and Sean have known each other a long time and their friendship and mutual admiration set a really comfortable tone as soon as they sat down on the stage. It was not a one-off conversation, but something that felt like an ongoing, evolving dialogue between two artists about their passions, struggles, and the particulars of bearing witness through art. Junot Diaz has some incredibly profound things to say about immigration as a "normative traumatic experience". I also loved what he had to say about the connected short story as an art form, and how he thinks it is more true to life (and love) than the novel.
