I speak Italian, Croatian, and English. From what I saw for Italian translation, the technology is truly impressive and the translations are impressively accurate. Given that in Italy all movies are translated in Italian and every actor has a specific voice-over artist, I wonder how this technology will impact the Italian film industry. Growing up in Italy, I became familiar with these dubbed voices. It was quite weird when I first heard the original voices of famous actors. It's likely that these traditions might change in the coming years due to advancements of AI technology.
I’m also wondering how will the the future change for the instant translation. Will this technology break down language barriers entirely. While I was always proud in speaking three languages, such skills may become less essential in the future. People might still learn languages for hobby or personal enrichment, even if there will be not much practical need for it. I’m kind of curious and worried where will we come in 5 or 10 years since so much has changed in just one year since chatGPT was released.
We tried Japanese, so amazed! Very natural!! Used a script with academic terms so some strange word choices similar to translation apps, but the tone, accent and rhythm were perfect. We also tried Portuguese and Mandarin and sent them to friends who are native speakers and they were all impressed. Scary to see that you can pronounce sounds that you actually can't in real life, and you can learn languages from yourself supported by AI 😂 Love all your videos Eric!
