      not 8 seconds. That is not what an 8 second swell period looks like lol. The swell period on that was at least 14 seconds. I highly doubt such a big wave could be produced from an 8 second period and you can also see in the video where it isn't cut that the period is much higher than 8 seconds. Also - in cases where the period is so high, there will also be sets. So a set will roll in with wave after wave then it will go dead for up to half an hour

    To all the people who are unfamiliar with this particular beach wondering why all the boats are out in what appears to be a dangerous spot: The underwater geology at Teahupo'o includes an extremely steep reef, which is what makes the big waves. However, the reef includes many channels that allow water to flow back out from shore. The water above these channels stays much calmer than over the rest of the reef. It is common practice to park boats and jet skis above this channel and ride out the massive but gentle swells right next to the more intense, surfable waves. This isn't especially dangerous as long as you stay well within the channel and don't flirt with the edge of the reef like a couple of these folks did. So don't go calling everyone there an idiot, they just know more about what they are doing than you.

    The people in the boats shown in this video seem to know the ground under the sea they ride on and they know where the rolling prat of the wave stops, and that is where they stay. But still they are asking for it as the position they chose to stay is rather marginal and a high oncoming wave will lift the bows up suddenly with the results shown in this video. In a case like this one should slow down as much as possible and not attack the wave at any speed as that is detrimental to the situation. Best think to do is not to engage such situations.

      +Jose Stickman It is perfectly normal not to wearing life jackets. I've been in many boats without wearing one, however it is the captains call as to whether or not you put one on. That call usually comes in rough seas like this. That is the least of their problems. What we have here is an unregulated clusterfuck. You have too many boats in too small an area with surfers and jet skies flying around in total chaos. Someone is going to get hurt. The boats and the surfers shouldn't be anywhere near each other. And the boats themselves need a lot more distance from each other.

    That green boat came sooo close to flipping, the guy riding the bow may of just saved them, I did that once, the boat was on its way over and just that little bit did the trick.

    Should read;
    Wave hits dopey boat.
    This is a just end for dropping in on the other boats just to get a better look or photo.

    I don’t see any accidents here, but that was a close call. I was there a different day in the red boat. They know what they are doing, but do push it a little too close at times. It’s usually the passengers that ask to get in a little closer for better shots. I asked our driver to get in closer because if you are too forward or to the outside, you can’t see the surfers in the pipe. I appreciated my driver’s caution and explaining what could happen if we got too close to the reef.

    Great day surfing until you smacked on the scone by the bow of a boat, ran over by a JetSki, chopped up with a propeller, pumbled like a rag doll in the surf and then dragged out to sea over a reef. Narley dude 🤙

    PEOPLE. Stop with the bullshit, that's Teahupoo's channel, there's a reason why this is considered to be one the world's most perfect waves: the shallow coral reef below guarantees that EVERY WAVE breaks at the same place with nearly the same shape, and that they ALWAYS end at the channel, which is where those boats were.
    If there was no channel in Teahupoo it'd be an unsurfable venue, there's no water in front of the wave to "duck dive" and reach the lineup. Channel = no waves breaking.
