Taylor Cross I realize. However, during that particular day, it happened every 8 seconds. I am familiar with wave patterns. I have lived and sailed on the great lakes for my whole life.
not 8 seconds. That is not what an 8 second swell period looks like lol. The swell period on that was at least 14 seconds. I highly doubt such a big wave could be produced from an 8 second period and you can also see in the video where it isn't cut that the period is much higher than 8 seconds. Also - in cases where the period is so high, there will also be sets. So a set will roll in with wave after wave then it will go dead for up to half an hour
To all the people who are unfamiliar with this particular beach wondering why all the boats are out in what appears to be a dangerous spot: The underwater geology at Teahupo'o includes an extremely steep reef, which is what makes the big waves. However, the reef includes many channels that allow water to flow back out from shore. The water above these channels stays much calmer than over the rest of the reef. It is common practice to park boats and jet skis above this channel and ride out the massive but gentle swells right next to the more intense, surfable waves. This isn't especially dangerous as long as you stay well within the channel and don't flirt with the edge of the reef like a couple of these folks did. So don't go calling everyone there an idiot, they just know more about what they are doing than you.

The people in the boats shown in this video seem to know the ground under the sea they ride on and they know where the rolling prat of the wave stops, and that is where they stay. But still they are asking for it as the position they chose to stay is rather marginal and a high oncoming wave will lift the bows up suddenly with the results shown in this video.
