    Hi Ben,
    As i said a week ago, i was really looking forward to your review of this and the fact that the paintjob didn't get a Big for Business seal of approval is frankly a travesty!
    I do agree that the battery is the only trash thing about the camera and i love the way they used the ring flash as a frame counter and charge level.
    One request i have is if it would be possible to do a video on night time photography with this camera. It's one of the few that allows you to do easy long exposures. I took a long exposure of a lake a couple of days ago on black and yellow film and it looks like a radioactive wasteland. Not the look i was going for but it's a great happy little accident. But the reason it looks like that is that i have no idea how to set the manual controls for night time long exposure shots.
    Anyway, keep your film cold and your iType cameras charged.

      Haha a beautiful paint job indeed and I can only proclaim so many things are big for biz, had to go with the lens for this one! Next time 😜. A vid about night Polaroid shooting is an interesting idea! Have had it on the list since before I launched the channel, definitely a compelling how-to concept. Perhaps might get to that in the future! Stay chargin 😎

    Another great video Ben, your production is tremendous! The I1 really is a cool looking camera, I've often thought about picking one up, really just for the collection as I have a OS+, being completely honest I'd never read up much on this one .
    Your point on the centred viewfinder is so true. As I mainly shoot sx-70 now I often find side viewfinders a pest and when I do use the os+ I find myself using the lens selector to assist in framing as it's in the middle above the lens. I wish they had continued the 5 lens system into the +, it really would have been perfect if they had.
    As you also say, the Bluetooth app options are a "nice to have" when you fancy messing about, it does take the analogy goodness away a little, I like the manual mode options for low light scenes, just adds another dimension to the possibilities.
    Anyway, enough of my wittering....

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks as always for the love Martin, always means a lot coming from you! I totally agree about the lens system on the OS+. Why not keep improving and adding lens elements? I reckon it’s a cost thing. As I talked about, the I-1 was a truly high end camera despite its battery faults, so it might make cameras far too expensive for Polaroid to try to match where the I-1 was at (or even where the last Spectra cameras were at). My philosophy at this point is that I’m supportive of Polaroid trying to coax customers in with simpler hardware. If it gets people interested, they’ll eventually upgrade to the SX-70 or whatever, those cameras are untouchable and will always be there for people who want the premium camera experience.

In the display case buried underneath a bunch of purses, was an unopened i-1 with a price tag of $15. And yes, I bought it. Sadly, I no longer have the camera. Great review! The thing about the battery may not be the battery. The I-1 has no off switch, so those metering functions in the ring flash are drawing power all.the.time. (The current crop of Polaroid/PO cameras all have a direct off switch, don't they?) Personally, I've never found the recharge-before-shoot thing to be a problem. And one other suggestion: If you're shooting in one of the close focus zones with the app, use a higher f-stop and a tripod. You'll need some extra depth of field to fill the gaps between the closer zones.

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety

      Yeah for sure, it may not be the battery itself, but moreso how the camera is powered. Still critical no matter how you look at it, but yes there’s a power button/switch on the new cameras. And they really do hold a thicc charge. Good advice about closeups! This is a greater size than medium format and your focus is paper thin. That’s why the SX-70 automatically stops down so much on closeups. Good tip! Thanks for the kind words Brian 🤟🏻

  • @MrChrodo
    @MrChrodo Před 3 lety

    Last year i've visited the US for the very first time. (I'm from Europe)
    So i bought my first Impossible I-1 just before the trip and i agree with everything you said. It feels more like a SX-70 when using it, very comfortable. The first two packs worked like expected. However, my unit started to get problems with the shutter release very quickly. When i arrived in NY and wanted to take a picture at the hotel, all i got were black frames. Charging it up didn't help, the shutter just stopped opening at all. And to this day, it still is. Even if i use the app to open the shutter for long exposures, it would not open.
    Weirdly the I-1 is the best i-type camera i've ever used, despite the fact it only held for two packs of film. Luckily i had my SX-70 with me for the rest of the trip, but try to find SX-70 film at stores like Bestbuy. I've ended up using 600 film in a SX-70 without a ND-filter. That was fun. :D
    Now that i own all i-type cameras ever released:
    - I-1 is unstable + battery is awful
    - OneStep 2 has only one focus zone and tends to overexpose easily (my unit at least)
    - Polaroid Now has a slow focus and the flash is SO weak. I took pictures at a wedding last weekend and even the upclose pictures (about 1-1,5 meters away) got pretty dark. And there is no exposure compensation.
    That is a bigger deal than i thought at first. Maybe the metering is not as good as on older models from Polaroid? For example, my Polaroid One misses a compensation yet it never failed once as hard.
    In conclusion: The OneStep 2 Plus might be the best of both worlds. But it is still boring, at least for me.
    Now i'm thinking about whether to
    - switch back to 600 cameras or
    - Buy a Onestep 2 Plus
    - Buy another I-1.
    How i wish, they would release a Spectra or Polaroid One-like i-type camera...

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety +1

      Yikes, sorry your camera had cardiac arrest. Glad you had the SX-70 on the hip to save the day. I think to this day the I-1 is the best of the best for i-type. Just a heads up about the Polaroid Now, it does have exposure comp. You have to long-press the flash button which toggles a bar in the LED frame window. Then you can tap the flash button to toggle lighter or darker. But yes I agree the metering can most definitely be iffy. I'd say based on everything you've outlined here there's no reason not to just stick with your SX-70, use the ND filters, and call it a day. The results will always sing. Slightly more expensive to get 600 film all the time? Yes, but it's for art! We love art.

    • @MrChrodo
      @MrChrodo Před 3 lety

      @@InAnInstant Oh yes, you are right! I really forgot about that weird double-press function. Hopefully it will compensate for the weak flash, I'll give it a shot. (pun intented)
      Totally agree, that is why i bought a second SX-70 after my first broke and it took me hours to get it clean and apply a new fake leather. It is beautiful now. It's actually not the money aspect, i've learned that lesson and try to stick to the SX-70.I could also buy the flash bar from Mint and and solve two problems at once. I don't like these fiddly ND filters for the cartridges.
      My problem is, that everyone else is too dumb for that camera. :D
      You can't just hand over a SX-70 to someone else (friends, relatives, penguins...) and expect them to focus correctly. My mum couldn't even get a sharp shot with the Sonar focus, since the concept of halfpressing a button is not widely accepted in a smartphone-conquered world.
      That being said, i need a second dumb camera that i can hand over to others occasionally.
      The Spectra Procam filled that gap perfectly (No ejection problems, wide-angle, good AF, looks cool), but it was too bulky sometimes even for me and you know the sad Spectra situation. :/

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety +1

      I feel you on the Spectra no longer being that go-to simpler cam you can hand off. I’ve definitely experienced that with the SX-70 as well, it’s very unfamiliar for people to wield, and objectively a very alien camera; people are like “wtf did you just hand me.” The I-1 is a bit easier, albeit another weird viewfinder. A camera like the Sun660 is extremely easy for most people to pick up, given the sonar is bang-bang and the shutter is simple. Your observation about half-pressing is so true, I feel I have to be very careful about it when showing folks for the first time. Requires significantly more finesse than tapping a phone screen 😂

    Was looking forward to the review I never wrote. As the I-1 poster boy of 2016 (referencing this shot I took with it www.rayliu.co.uk/polaroids/TowerBridge.jpg ), I have SO much love for this camera and the audience it bought me.
    Amongst all the haters, there seems to be about a dozen of people in the world that LOVE this thing, mainly those that took the time to swear at all its Gen 1 quirks and actually shot something different with it, that no SX-70/SLR680 would be capable of.
    I know all the other damn cons, the weak ass ring flash, the viewfinder parallax and suicidal attempts at falling off the camera, and that damn power switch which could turn on just with a slight turn of the wheel. And No, it didn't come with a portable battery pack (to charge it when it was dead) and a tripod is not included (soz for my sense of humour) BUT...... aside from that and if you can overlook those things, this is a seriously great camera to experiment with. Yes the app is annoying and takes you out of the shooting experience, but I still think the app is a lot better than the new Polaroid app.
    Plus it was the first 'new' Polaroid camera that I had worked out how to do double exposures with, in a long line of working it out with the OS2/OS+ until Polaroid got sick of me working it out and sent me an Polaroid Now prototype :)

    • @InAnInstant
      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety

      First of all, absolutely sick shot Ray, love that one and really nice to see someone express appreciation for the I-1! So often this gets burnt to a crisp on the internet.com. I know the OS+ shares some similar features now but still nothing really approaches this lens in the current line (and may not for quite some time). Agreed with all you mentioned and that those things can be circumvented with some TLC and craftsmanship. After all, we're shooting instant as a medium for art, that won't always be an easy road no matter what tool you're using. Polaroid Now is still kinda quirky to do double exposures with, prob the only feature where I prefer it as a BT feature (besides the Lomo cameras which do it far easier).

    • @rayliu7762
      @rayliu7762 Před 3 lety

      Ben, Im sure you know but the I-1, OS2, OS+ all had ways of doing double exposure WITHOUT the app, just using the camera.
      Basically take the 1st shot, keep your finger on the shutter, and turn off the camera. Count to 5, and then turn camera back on, take second exposure.

      @InAnInstant  Před 3 lety

      This is definitely not a good thing, but what I recommend is either trying to install your own (buy the box-type frog tongue from Polaroid) or flip the camera over immediately after taking a shot so that the photo does not hit direct light right away. This should be very easy to do, but it’s all about timing. If you flip it upside down too fast it could blur the shot before the shutter is done firing. So right as it starts ejecting flip it and make sure the photo ejects with the back of it facing up
