  • Recently after trying out water bowls for my hamster's, I thought I would do a video comparing water bottles and water bowls. There seems to be a lot of people who question whether or not you should use a bowl or water bottle and which is safer or better so today I talk about my experience with both.
Here's the water dishes I use:

I have bought like three types of water bottles for my hamster, but she just never used them.. I tried so hard to make her learn to drink from it, I put a little honey on the tip and all, but she didn’t care. So I’ve always used a water bowl, which she loves. But I’ve always thought that the bottles were way better and hygienic, so this made me less stressed and happy😊

I got my hamster from Petco about five days ago, (I know it’s not right and I don’t support them, but Craigslist and things like that don’t have any in my area. I have tried many websites) he has been doing very well. He (as expected) used water bottles. When he came to me, I knew I wanted to try a water dish, and I was very worried that he didn’t know how/wasn’t drinking from them. But one day, I cleaned and refilled his dish and FORGOT TO PUT IT INTO HIS CAGE. When I came to his cage around 8pm (because that’s when he wakes up for his day) I freaked and put it back in his cage. Straight away, he started drinking because he was clearly thirsty from not having had water all day. I was very angry with myself, but it reassured me that he was, in fact drinking water. (By the way, we are not completely there yet with taming, I just got him 5 days ago so we aren’t quite there yet with taming, he’s just getting used to sitting in my hands and eating food and being petted, so I don’t want to scare him with the pinching dehydration hack.)

Edit- it’s a joke I’m sorry to offend anyone I know some people can’t afford a big cage but bin cages are an option if you have a hamster and can’t afford proper care/ a proper home I suggest not adopting a hamster if you cannot look after it I apologise for my joke and sorry to those who took it the wrong way

Ok so it’s been a year I’ve read every reply and a lot of you place valid arguments- I was making a joke. I also saw people saying some people can’t afford large cages. One most small cages are more expensive than a large cage such as the crittertrail cages. Also going to a reply I agree with- if you can’t afford a child or can’t look after a child properly don’t have a child and it applies with hamsters if you can’t afford to take care of them or provide them with what they need don’t get one. Thank you to the people saying I didn’t need to apologise- my parents raised me to apologise and be polite no matter what but thank you anyway

Well done on covering this topic! It certainly can be controversial at times, but I agree that both of them have good and bad points to using them. Your hamster footage was too cute with their teeny tongues! 😋 That water dish is the perfect size. I've tried using a reptile water-er that has a dish on it with a few of my hamsters, but they always ignored it or got bedding inside. I also like being able to monitor how much water they are drinking, especially as they age, which is easier with a bottle as it doesn't evaporate. 💦

I did this as my hamster is very picky and when I first got her she only had a bottle and she refused to use it and as soon as I got a dish she started drinking - then she wanted her bottle back! This is just what works for me and my lil hamster!

Hi Victoria I have never had a hamster before so I didn't know what to do but I have changed my water bottle to a bowl, and a couple days ago I decided not to use a food bowl and to just put enough food around the cage for her everyday, she hasn't tried drinking out of it yet but I'm sure she will know what to do when she needs it. Thanks for all your help by the way.

when i first clicked on this, i was waiting for you to start bashing bowls but you didn’t and i agree! people say they’ll drown in it or fall in and catch a chill, and it’s more germy. but it’s easy to clean a bowl and a little more difficult to clean a bottle unless you have a brush cleaner. and they’re not dumb, they’re not gonna just let themselves drown in a tiny bit of water. and they learn after a day or so where the edge of the bowl is so they don’t fall in.

I don't use water bottles for any of my critters. I have *several* water dishes, and change them out frequently. I did an experiment with my pets once -- gave a water bottle and a dish. All of them chose the dish over the bottle. I've read about pets dying from dehydration because their water bottle malfunctioned, and their owners didn't notice in time. Very very sad. I hit up dollar stores or thift shops to find wide, low dishes for my critters now. I usually find ramekins, or little jewellery dishes.
