Poet and writer Javed Akhtar on Sahir Ludhianvi versus Majrooh Sultanpuri

  • I had what turned out to be a remarkable conversation with Javed Akhtar on my signature interview show 'Stars Aligned' on Bharat FM/Facebook live last night. This is a clip from that conversation about one of my favorite themes in Hindi cinema music--Sahir versus Majrooh, not that it is a contest. It is absolutely not. Nevertheless, दिल को बहलाने के लिए ख्याल अछ्छा है.

Of course Majrooh Sultanpuri was a best lyricist but Sahir Ludhianvi couldn't be compared.I'm blessed to have friendship with Sahir Ludhianvi Ji. This is Javed Akhtar's best clarification about Sahir Ludhianvi's philosophical songs.

It's not good to compare these 3 legends - Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab , Sahir Ludhianvi sahab & Shailendra sahab . But personally I feel Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab to be the best among all ( personal ) opinion . I have many reasons for my justification :-
Firstly , its not an easy task to understand the sentiments of all music directors & work accordingly . But Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab was enough capable to understand what type of lyrics will suit better in the music director's composition ( also the scene situation ) & accordingly write hit after hit songs . Many of the top singers of his times has many many hit numbers written by Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab only .
Secondly , it's not an easy task to simultaneously write songs for films & at the same time , writing Ghazals , Nazms , Shayaris etc. for poetry , both being successful .
Besides , there are many other reasons why I admire Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab . It was his song "Ae Dil Mujhe Aisi Jagah Le Chal..." that brought Talat Mahmood sahab to recognition in Bollywood as a playback singer . His songs from 'Teesri Manzil (1966)' helped Rahul Dev Burman sahab to establish as a very successful music director of Bollywood . His songs from 'Janta Hawaldar (1979)' helped singer Anwar sahab to establish further as a successful playback singer . Many music directors like S. Madan sahab , Usha Khanna'ji , Rajesh Roshan Lal Nagrath sahab , Anand-Milind sahabs had delivered hit songs from their very first Bollywood film as it was a belief that he could give hit lyrics for any new music directors & playback singers . Majority of the most famous songs of singers especially like Kishore Kumar sahab , Mohammed Rafi sahab , Asha Bhosle'ji , Geeta Dutt'ji & others had hit songs written by one & only Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab .
That is why , for me , Majrooh Sultanpuri sahab is the best lyricist . 🙂

Sahir Ludhianvi’s Poetry & Philosophy in Literature & Bollywood history SHALL STAND TALL FOR EVER & EVER-- Einstein's quote about Mahatma Gandhi fits perfectly when applied towards Sahir Ludhianvi.“Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." (said Einstein of Mahatma Gandhi--as answer to A question by A reporter). Sahir’s poetry & wisdom would shine on this earth long after we have perished. SAHIR= Wisdom of Aristotle+Brilliance of Einstein. Sahir Ludhianvi was FIRST A PHILOSOPHER who wrote poetry to convey his GOD GIVEN WISDOM & life experiences of his own to common man for his/her welfare in his poetry. Every word was carefully crafted & inserted in the right context to convey the true message from that great thinker for A given situation (issue facing common man under similar circumstances). Not even one other published poet in any language has addressed so many diverse issues facing the mortals in his/her work as Sahir has done in impeccable manner & forceful combination of words.
Long after we (mortals) have perished, immortal poetry by SAHIR would shine on this earth with light radiated by NEXT SUN after the demise of the present Sun--millions of years from today.

In Bollywood this great poet dominated for about 40 years. He produced A movie but for his movie production he asked Sahir to write lyrics. And one immortal song from that movie is "Hum intezar karenge tera qayamat tak--khuda kare ke qayamat ho aur tu aye"
Another movie producer had lyrics written by Majrooh & movie flopped & producer sustained massive loss. For his next movie the producer went to Majrooh & requested if under the situation for 2 songs in his next movie he could give producer A little break on the fee. Majrooh angrily blurted "Gaane 2 hon yaa 9-- his fee is his full fee".The producer(Saawan Kumar Tak) said to himself "Teri galiyon mein Na Ayenge aaj ke baad" & quickly walked off into the street disappointed & disgusted. The same producer started writing lyrics for his future movies himself & used that line in his next movie as A hit song.
Rabindranath Tagore won Nobel prize for his poetry & on a scale of 1 to 100, in my humble opinion, he scores about 30.On the same scale Sahir scores A billion if not more. That is my 2 cents in this discussion. Sahir =Wisdom of Aristotle + brilliance of Einstein--IN ONE IMMORTAL MAN COMPOSING IMMORTAL POETRY, Let poetry be judged by core content (defined as philosophy & wisdom inside the poetry).

Sahir was far ahead of Majrooh, if majrooh was more prolific it does'nt matter much bcz SAHIR was more selective in his work n also died earlier, Majrooh was more of professional n lived longer. Sahir was the 1 n the only having the capability 2 express his inner-most feelings in the most impressive manner, his poems like Taj Mahal, n others bear testimony 2 his great literary potential. His lyrics in CHITERLEKHA, written in hindi diction r considered as a masterpiece. In my opinion Rajinder Krishen was better in song writing then Majrooh.

The word in Bade Mian Deewane song that you're alluding to is teddi - locust - and not dandy. Locusts are known to swoop upon paddy fields and wreak havoc . That's how Joy Mukherjee is urging IS Jowhar to sweep beautiful women off their feet.

Mr. Hussain, Thank you so much for your response. Based on your explanation I have no hesitation in acknowledging that it seems I may be wrong about the use of the word dandy. I still keep hearing dandy because the theme of the whole song is about how to develop a swag.
That said, my contention is not based on this single expression but a whole body of Majrooh Sultanpuri's work. It is essential to bear in mind that I am talking about a Hindi lyricist in this context and not a poet, which incidentally both excelled at. Hindi cinema lyrics as you well know are a different ballgame altogether. Nevertheless, this is just a matter of fun opinion and not a deeply scholastic conversation. It is lovely of you to take the trouble. Cheers.

Thank you, Mayank ji! As I said I don't want to be a part of this debate which for me is a nonstarter because Sahir , in my view, is far far superior to Majrooh both as a poet and as a lyricist. But still, let me add something here. I think among lyricists who have a considerable body of work, only Shakeel can match Sahir in quality, range and depth. In the fifties and the sixties, Indian cinema had a number fantastic lyricists. Shakeel and Sahir, for me, top the chart by a big mile.

The man who wrote jaane walo zara (Dosti), mai ri kase kahun (Dastak), ik din bik jayega (Dharam Karam), hume tumse pyar kitna (Kudrat) and many more.. all are different from one another, so it is difficult to identify Majrooh Ji's songs.... That's why his writing was so versatile

    • @ImranKhan-zb2hd
      @ImranKhan-zb2hd Před 3 lety +2

@resaa78 Majrooh Ji has the phenomenal ability to write the lyric on the composition of the tune on the other hand Sahir Ji demand the music composer to compose the music according to his lyric, may be this could be the reason that music maestro like Naushad, Shankar - Jaikishan, Ghulam Mohammad had never used Sahir Ji's poem.... Majrooh Ji's versatility can't be compared with anyone.
