My yellow bellied slider was a mass murderer for the first few times we tried to add fish-we used to get him feeders as a treat and as incentive to keep active in his smaller tank. We did, upon getting a 75 gallon tank, receive a large jaguar cichlid that was housed with him for a couple of months. They fought for a week or two, but after the fish realized that the turtle was immune to his attacks during feeding time, he started just avoiding the turtle, who was really too dumb to even notice. This obviously was not ideal for the fish, but he was just too large for the turtle to bother in all honesty, so they were healthy for the entire time. We ended up giving the cichlid away shortly thereafter and got a new set up for the turtle. Upon putting him in his tank, my brother came over with some fish he wanted to get rid of, so he tried feeding them to the turtle-who gave a good attempt at eating them only to find that they ganged up on him and chased him around the tank until he gave up. Now, oddly enough, he leaves most of the fish alone.
All that said, I am currently housing my slider in a 150 gallon tank. He's about 7 or 8 inches in length and is about 8 years old. We had 4 Giant Danios, a semi-large plecostomus (armored catfish), and two leftover feeders that the turtle left alive all in the same tank. They all got along swimmingly (pun intended). There was no issue with the turtle attempting to attack even the feeders, which is funny because we put them as part of a group of maybe 10 for him to eat. he ate 8 and left the 2, which got larger and eventually became tankmates.
The thing I would look for in a good tankmate for a turtle is size, firstly. If the fish is larger than the turtle's mouth, that's a good starting point. Size and speed are the two considerations that will determine the fish's ability to ward off a hungry turtle. Another thing is the shape of their fins. Several fish are too big for the turtle to eat, but if they have long, flowy fins (like an angelfish) then the turtle will likely nip at them even if it does not want to eat them. A third factor is whether or not the fish school. Schooling fish can ward off a turtle better than loners, as illustrated by the Danio example I mentioned. The temperament of the turtle is also key-as I said, mine attempted to eat the fish until the Danios bullied him into submission, and now he does not even chase fish around the tank.
Lastly, juvenile turtles in some species (such as sliders and cooters) are more likely to chase fish than adults, as they require a higher protein diet. Well fed turtles are also obviously less likely to try and kill fish. Bear in mind that if your fish does die, chances are very high that your turtle will try and eat it afterward, even if they got along before. Just some observations I've seen in my (ongoing) experience in keeping fish and turtles together.

With it being such a large tank though and filtration good enough for 300 gallons I wanted to add some fish as well so I got 3 10-12 inch goldfish, thy are double the size of the turtles so they couldn’t really be hurt by them and they are all doing really well together now.

We have a pleco fish (sucker fish) named Mudkip in with our yellow bellied slider, Shellshocker (Yes. We have a theme with the names), and he has survived for a few months now. There was a scare where he took a chomp of its fin, but it got away and Shellshocker has left it alone. Mudkip was able to recover its fin. What's really neat about this fish is that for the most part, it keeps the glass and toys clean. We have even seen it go ahead and clean algae off of Shellshocker if it is so inclined and that helps us see the entirety of his shell to check for any problems on it. The only problem now is that sometimes it will do this to the point of annoying Shellshocker (even getting on his face sometimes) and he will kick him away. I wasn't there for this, but apparently Shellshocker got so annoyed that he kicked Mudkip clean across the tank and left him in shock for a few seconds. Thankfully, Mudkip is fine and that has never happened again. But that's just our turtle's companion. Not sure if this works for everyone.

Good video! I have three turtles, two red eared slider and one yellow belly. I've had them since they were babies and they've grown huge just after a year. They're in a 55 gallon tank now. It's a lot of trial and error with tank mates. I have one pleco who's survived over a year with them and decided to invest in two more. I added six tiger barb to my tank about a month ago and so far so good. They ate my guppies, snails, gold fish and cory doras a few months back.

Thanks so much for all you do! Your videos are the best out there. I have a red eared slider, and he is a boracious predator! I give him only minnows, which they sell at PetSmart for less than a dollar. He tends to thin out the school pretty quickly, but usually he will leave 2 or 3 alive (as friends or what I don't know, maybe they're just too fast for him). I have seen him eat 6 in a span of less than 2 days before, so I tend to strech out time between when I buy them for him, but I like him to have some live food here and there.

In my experience, if you have a large amount of small dither fish that are very fast the turtle will only catch a few at first and one every now and then but usually ignore them. Even my Mata Mata has gotten used to my mosquito fish and doesn't hunt them. To be clear I have a 125 gallon tank with a Mata Mata turtle, an African Sideneck turtle, and a stinkpot turtle. The tank is full of eastern mosquito fish that I trapped from my pond however eventually the turtles got used to them and stopped actively hunting them.

None got eaten, i've lost 1 danio and 1 guppy but it was due to some disease or something, they stopped eating and swimming so yeah..not eaten. I love this video! I'm soon getting a razorback musk turtle and have been wondering what fish I can keep with it. The only thing I've questioned is the "suckerfish". Could a pleco live with a musk turtle as they get to a large size and muskies dont. Plus as you said, they don't chase fish so much and plecos also have tough skin as they're an armoured catfish. I thought that I should note that this will not be for the whole year as during warmer months the turtle will be outside in a pond (it will still have a heat bulb and uvb for the basking spot) but during winter will be inside as where I live, the winters get very cold. I do also know someone who keeps musk turtles outside during the summer and they are very healthy so I know that it can be done. I just realised how long this comment Is.

Great video! Would have been useful to me a couple of years back. Through trial and error I bought various species of fish and my experience mirrored your own. Nice to see someone else with a pragmatic attitude towards fish with turtles. Buy cheap fish as frankly most turtles will eat them at some point. I keep Sliders, Musk's and razorback Musk's (different and large tanks).
My Sliders live with a pair of 4" pleco's (Albino Bristlenose and L235), they stay small and the tank has rocks and crevices for them to hide in. The turtles have left them alone for over two years. They do however eat everything else. I went through 70 Tetras, all varieties were eaten in short order. I have a single Bronze Cory that has survived (out of 40 I bred). Honestly he was just lucky.
Musk's are not as agile as Sliders so they tend to ignore what they can't catch but will still snap and catch the odd fish. As you said though it generally about Species and Personality, turtles are so varied in their behavior you really have to just try some fish out.

I have two 6 years old turtles, one red eared male and one yellow belly female in a 240lt tank that's not filled all the way up. We tried to get a fish (Google says it's called gibbicep) because they told us that they get along with turtles and help keep the tank clean but it turned out that the turtles (most likely the female) ate it. We tried again with the same fish but bigger and older and it's been one week since then. It looks like it's not gonna make it because the female turtle bit off it's tail and the fish is not only bleeding, it's also having a high heart rate and it's shitting all over the tank. I have plants and rocks but it looks like the fish is kinda dumb because it stays in an open spot. In case it'll die I don't think I'll try to put another fish.

I have a small red ear slider and my roommate wanted to get fish for him/her (not sure of the gender but i took the liberty of calling him/her ARTURO). I told him NOT to get gold fish and i come home and low and behold there are now 11 goldfish O_O!!! So here i am taking notes from your video.
SIDE NOTE: Here is a list of things i got in the last few days for my roommates turtle even though i am the one taking care of it.
    1. 10g tank (upgraded from a very small portable plastic case)
    2. 10g filter system that makes a bit of a waterfall (got tired of cleaning the small case daily after feeding which had no filter system)
    3. Floating Dock (started to be used for basking as soon as i got the Combo Light UVA/UVB system)
    4. Combo UVA/UVB lighting system (50w mini blue heat light for basking and a 26w white light)
    5. A giant round smooth stone (Placed in corner just under floating platform for easier access)
All this was about $150 minus the rock (Petco is not cheap but were talking about a life here)
Im completely new to this turtle buisness but i have done a bit of research and still learning. Now i need to learn how to keep the water clean and what stuff i need for the PH balance and anything else i need.

You can start with this turtle tank maintenance video, I cover how to and how often to change the water, clean the filter, etc. czcams.com/video/KuIZYQOPmYc/video.html For Ph, Gh, Kh, and things of the sort, I honestly am not too concerned with them as far as turtles, because the turtles don't really care since they don't actually breath in the water etc. Sounds like your setup will be nice for the baby :D

Barbs are a great option too, ive got 2 schools of 8 tiger barbs and 8 rosy barbs with my painted turtle and they’re just too fast and agile for him so he just ignores them. They’ve been with the turtle for months and not a single loss. Haven’t had luck with tetras, the turtle just dives at the school and picks them off one at a time. Started out with 20 and now I’m down to about 8. Same with Cory cats, to fat and slow. Plecos are hit and miss for me, I had to move my common pleco to another tank because of the turtle nipping at fins, but the 2 bristlenose plecos I have with him stay well hidden until the turtle goes to sleep

I have 2 plecos and a red eared slider. First night I threw them in he was curious but didn’t do anything (common pleco and bristlenose) its been about month or 2 and they’re still alive. I have driftwood to keep them hiding but they’ll be on the glass and my turtle does not bother them at all. Maybe just depends on the turtle. I also have a 75 gal tank as well. Stay away from any albino fish your turtle will spot them easier.

Note: I think any kind of Corydora would be a bad idea. With their armor and barbels, and turtle could potentially choke on one. Other predators sometimes die this way when ingesting corys.

My daughter got me a pleco. It was about 2 inches long. I have, Splash, a 5-1/2" red eared slider. I floated the bag, putting more and more tank water in the bag. In the meantime, I fed Splash a slightly large meal. Splash crawled up on his basking rock and went to sleep.
Then when the acclimating was done, I put the pleco into the tank. Everything was going fine till the turtle woke up. It was like he could smell the pleco. He was relentless. It was so sad, but I want fish in my tank. I can let him have one occasionally. It made me very sad. I would rather the fish lived happily ever after. I know, real life.
So, what kind and size of fish do you suggest? This may not work, but I want to try. I believe Splash is a kinda teenager. I only have his size to go by. If you could give me an idea about his age.
I love your show and have seen a lot of them. I am always telling everyone on Facebook to watch you on CZcams. I belong to 3 turtle groups on Facebook. You have helped me so much. Thank you.

My slider will catch and eat Dani’s and tetras in bulk.. came him yesterday and he had eaten 3 neons and 1 fancy guppy.. ironically what seems to last the longest is rosy reds lol.. he even managed to catch a full grown rainbow shark a few months ago.. I’ve just come to realize I have to keep buying fish every month and encourage them to breed as much as possible to lessen the fish costs.. seems the longer the fish are in the tank the more comfortable they get with my turtle to the point of being careless.. my slider doesn’t chance after then he simply floats on the surface and waited for one to get near him

I have turtles and ive had fish with them and they only attacked a baby koi i had in the tank (Which was a horrible idea) the koi killed more fish than my turtles (the koi killed my two neon tetras). And the koi messed with the turtles and the red eared just took a chunk out of the koi. Needless to say the koi never messed with them again. We gave away the koi away a week later. They currently live peacefully with two goldfish and one pop-eye goldfish.

Hi, we just setup a 3 gallon tank & so far it's doing well!
We've had Frank (The betta) For for about two weeks(with 1 plant) He's about 2 inches long (if that).
Now, he moved in With a baby (maybe 3 month old ((maybe two inches also)) baby girl (red eared slider turtle)
But, they both eat well(plants / lettuce & blood worms for the turtle .. Blood worms & betta balls 😁 for Frank)
I don't think the turtle has tried to eat the betta or even nip at him yet(And, hope she doesn't try) They have only been together for about a week but, they stay away from each other or just stare at each other lol
Right now, Frank can out swim & manuver her.. He also has smaller spots to hide in plants & the tunnel under the turtles floating/basking rock..
Well.. I'm now worried from what everyone's said here..
But, I will of course move the baby girl soon to a bigger tank(Within the month)
I'm thinking of building it myself(and, maybe making a video of it!)
I've been watching a ton of CZcams videos & now think I can build a 96.5 gallon tank under my table
We live in a small studio apartment .. I'm hoping that will be big enough for a few years for the 🐢
Like I said she's only a few inches right now(like maybe 3 inches tops!)
I'm hoping she doesn't eat Frank(the betta) or our 🐌
I'm going to get more plants & maybe one other snail.. I also added a few leaves of lettuce floating on top & the baby girl has been eating on those also 👍🏻
Take care & thanks for the video 🙏🏼
