    I make mine by frying the kielbasa first. It puts the flavor into the oil and helps get through the cabbage. I use salt pepper, red pepper and sometimes celery salt. I usually use a bunch of onions and some garlic. I don't use a whole lot of oil because I like the flavor of caramelized cabbage.

      Potatoes I fry with the kielbasa too, when I use cabbage I fry the potatoes separately with onions and garlic.

    Im 75 years old and been on keto diet for 7 years, bacon, eggs, butter, lard is not bad, you need to look up on you tube, Dr Ken Berry and so many others that teach about low carb foods. It literally saves lives.

    • @shelley7975
      @shelley7975 Před rokem +3

      Exactly. The body and brain need animal fats. The less carbs I eat, the better I feel and the more energy I feel. I start my day with eggs and bacon, and it's amazing how much energy I have during the day. I also eat only butter, and render my own lard from suet. I'm 65 and I don't take any medications and no pain meds.

      @@CzechtoU Did you know that some people have higher levels of cholesterol than others and that it just may be the way his body functions? Not only that, they've been under a lot of stress, and stress plays havoc on the body. Stress will kill you faster than high cholesterol levels. The research is there, cholesterol is not the villian.

      My Grandmother ate pork, cooked with lard and butter and she lived to be 100 and 1 day old. She didn't eat "light bread" only biscuits and Cornbread. She did eat a lot of vegetables. She never went to the dr, except the ER Dr 2 times. But after she turned 90 my Uncle had to put her in a Nursing Home.

    My great grandparents lived up until their nineties. They ate everything from their garden. My great grandad used to smoke his own meats and made his own sauerkraut in barrels. My great grandmother used to cook with lard and bacon grease. They never had any health issues until they were elderly. They worked very hard up until their death. My great grandmother also had thirteen children. My husband and I have eleven children.I honestly believe it's the chemicals and pesticides they put in our foods now that are harming us.

    To cut down on the fat when I make this dish I use a bit of butter and about 1/2 cup of chicken stock. Makes it really moist and a bit healthier too. One of my favorite dishes.

    BRENDA. Hi from Dallas, Texas . I am a 71 year old, southern cooking gal that cooks everything from scratch like you do. I want to let you know a little easier way to do your cabbage to where you don’t have to add all that amount of oil that you just did. Cook your bacon first and then set it off to the side and leave just a little amount of grease in your skillet for seasoning. Add your cabbage and your chopped up onion and salt and pepper it and put in about an inch and a half of water. Put a lid on it and cook it and that will help release that water out of your cabbage and it will cook your onions done at the same time. We can also add a tab of butter in there if you would like to, but you don’t need to add any more grease or oil. Then when it’s done, and if you have too much juice in there, just drain it off. Then add your crumble bacon on top. That’s It. So tender and good.

    My Appalachian grandparents and parents made this but they also grew their own hogs and made their own sausage. They raised 95% of their food in the huge garden and dried their own herbs, and had chickens, and killed a steer and deer every year and raised hogs. They made butter and rendered lard. That was the real Appalachian way!! No processed packets and box mess or pouched stuff and processed canned stuff!! I miss them now.

Basically, its a video where you are eating a meal and talking etc. These kinds of videos are good for people who are alone and want to eat along with people they enjoy the company of. You could list the recipe of the meal you are eating or even better, make the meal and then have the sit down "eat with me". Just a thought!

    Brenda and David, I’m a retired RN who worked on the heart floor. 1 or 2 tablespoons of bacon grease never hurt anyone. I’m 71 yrs old, diabetic, pacemaker, and high blood pressure. However, other than rhythm problems, my heart is without any blockages. If you cut out everything you are used to eating, you are more likely to splurge eating. So, take it slow and easy. Cut out as much salt as possible, but spice your food with it. Just less than you’re used to using. You can have red meat 2-3 times a week. I fix homemade biscuits at least once a week, cornbread, and homemade white bread. I’m as healthy as a horse, and my Dad died at 59 with his second heart attack. What I’m trying to say, is moderation is the key to life. Love your show. I’m in West Virginia.

    Hey y’all, Ms Brenda you look so pretty 🥰. I love Cabbage my mama and grandma used to fry it ,that’s how I learned watching them. I put bacon grease lots of it and butter to fry mine.I love it with some sugar in it,also I put mixed vegetables that I cook in the microwave before I add it to the cabbage….yummy! I also make it with sausage and potatoes with garlic and chicken broth,little red pepper 🌶️ a meal and of course ,corn bread.love hearing your stories,always makes me smile😊. I also put the lid on it so I don’t need more grease and it cooks so much faster. Thank you for sharing this with us. Love y’all 😘

    Just add a little water to the cabbage and put a cover on it , the cabbage gets tender and the taste goes through it . Brenda you use far to much grease and salt .

    Best thing in the world is the root or core of a cabbage. Cut off all the yellow-ish parts. Rinse, sprinkle with a bit of salt...and eat. Tastes just like kohlrabi. Delicious!

    That looks so good Brenda and David, I'm definitely going to be making this for supper, with some mashed potatoes on the side. David is your house pretty remote - are you able to have cable tv, or do you have to have a satellite dish? Wow, a couple days to upload a video, you sure are patient!
