- I went to Connection Thailand Auto Show at Fashion Island mall in the Khan Na Yao district of Bangkok. It's the biggest show in the country and the biggest I've ever attended.

Everyone always gets this wrong, including CB Media, so here it goes: Toyota did indeed sell the GR Yaris in Thailand. It was priced at 2.69 million THB, and only about 70 units were brought into Thailand. These units didn't need to be imported as grey market cars in 2021. However, since they were all sold out before their release, the only way to acquire one afterwards was through a grey market import, which incurred an import tax of approximately 200%. I know this because I bought one myself for 3.75 million THB. Yes, it was extremely expensive, as are all grey market imports here. Only a select group of highly connected Thai elites were able to reserve and purchase them directly from Toyota at a lower price. A similar scenario unfolded with the recent launch of the Civic Type R. Furthermore, the import tax is not always 300%. For some cars, it can be as low as 100%. The tax rate is influenced by many factors, including the car's size, engine displacement and configuration, safety features, its price overseas, and the country of origin.
Thanks for the information. I tried looking up the tax rate and when they implemented it but I didn't come up with anything. If you know where a chart or something on the tax rates are that would be awesome if I could look at it since I'm pretty curious about it. I was just going off what a Thai importer told me about some of the cars they were importing like the Honda S660. I had no idea that they only sold 70 GR Yaris's (Yarii?). Did they not sell any after 2021?
@@RichieAsmus The GR Yaris sold out worldwide shortly after its debut. Even in large markets like the UK, some buyers faced 2-3 years of waiting for delivery after securing their allocation. In Southeast Asian countries, only one batch of GR Yaris was allocated in 2020, with none following thereafter. It has become the most sought-after sports hatchback in recent times. It's rare for a car with a total production of 25,000 units to sell out worldwide before its release. Demand has only grown over the last few years, which is why I wanted one-it's a guaranteed future classic. The car is very fun to drive and extremely underrated, being lighter and faster (stock for stock) than most cars at this car meet. If you've never driven one, I highly recommend trying; you'll be hooked. As for the document detailing the import tax breakdown and its calculation, I can't link it here due to CZcams's restrictions. However, a search for 'Thai customs vehicle import tax' on the internet will yield many results.
@@VidNibsWow, Thanks for the info. I was aware that they were hard to get everywhere but I didn't think it was to that extent. I mostly just knew it was yet another car that the US wasn't allowed. We do get the Corolla GR now though. I'll look into those tax rate some more. It would be nice if I can make a cheat sheet for popular vehicles I see at shows.

How do I find out about car shows in Bangkok? I went to Liberty Walk and while I was in that area and I asked about local shows but got no info 😢
I sub to CB's patreon but also look on facebook for a lot of the events. Some of the big ones are also advertised around the city like the Motor Expo and jetski racing in Jomtien (missed that this year). I also sometimes hear about future events at other events.

Haha, I don't know! I think that one is in my Skyline meet video though. It's hard to look at every car and I don't know the difference between an R30/31 yet haha.
