Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to walk me through some of my tuning questions a few weeks back via messenger.. last race was definitely an improvement all the way around thank you again
Many thanks for this video! I am looking forward to the tuning video. Next session I will change from Elektro Buggy to Nitro Buggy. And your videos are always a very good reference.
Thanks Adam. My understanding of tuning is starting to make more sense with the valuable info you have shared in this video. Cannot wait for your next vid!
Thanks Adam for this great video! Your future video about what a nitro engine should sound with some example of rich or lean will be a must ! Thanks again ! 👌
I have an os .21 tm in my Traxxas revo reaching up to 300 degrees running vp 20% fuel 14% oil running it more rich and still temps keep rising up up to 300 degrees every time I run it and can’t find a solution it’s a fairly new engine need some advice anything helps
Man, I got so caught up in the temp based tuning, I was going in circles. I recently acquired an old original hyper 7 for $30. with the 21 4 port. It sat in a barn for over a decade. I took the engine apart, it was seized up, and the piston skirt is missing a big chunk. I put it back together. I mixed a bottle of 33 and 20 percent traxxas. It runs like a scalded dog, but temps at 280- 300f. I was told by the LHS that 240f is about max. I gave up, and just run it. Still has really nice compression, idles perfect and GOES!!
I have an SH .32 heli motor and run it on 20%nitro with 20% oil and it doesn't even make power till 250°. It runs the happiest @ about 270. I've even experimented with different mufflers and glow plugs. I just chalked the hi Temps up to it being a motor designed by a company that seems to predominantly make rc car engine.
What part of the engine are you supposed to temp the engine? I've seen people temp the crankcase, the top of the head, the side of the head, inside the head pointing directly at the glow plug. I've temped my engine at all these locations and they are drastically different from each other. So, what part of the engine should I temp for the proper temperature? Thanks again Adam for great detail in your videos!!!
This is great advice adam!! I do have a suggestion for maybe your tunning video or maybe a part 2 and this tunning for different temps & conditions. Last weekend i raced in cold 45 ish degree weather. Would you wrap your motor in tin foil to keep the temp up?
@@AdamDrake I ment for running in cold temps .. since the head is getting cool that would throw your tune off since its not running at the temp it needs right?
Hi Adam, I have been tuning my Novarossi Roma .25 today after doing a 10 tank run-in. The low needle is set so the engine cuts at 6 seconds when pinching the fuel line and the high needle is still very rich but the engine is now reaching 310F. I don't seem to be able to lean out the high needle enough to get good top speed without excessive heat. It was only 10C air temp with a 50f - 77f novarossi turbo plug running 20% optifuel. Some people are saying there engines don't start running well until the temp is at about 350f - 410f , this is a lot higher than the 270F I was expecting. What temp would you say is safe? There is still loads of smoke and oil coming from the exhaust at 310F. There is no pinging or bogging and low to mid is strong but doesn't seem very fast for that engine.
300 - 310F is usually the max, but like I explained in the video, making sure the engine is getting fuel and oil at a higher RPM is what really important. Make sure your clutch is working correct and maybe try 30% nitro to reduce the engine temp slightly.
Im not super experienced with nitro. I have an old xxxnt that needs a new engine and a Ignite Design 22t conversion with an os .12tg. soo what about the pinch method for the low speed needle? is that an ok method? I used that to try and get it close. the car runs really good and has a nice smoke trail and gets about 260 degrees.
Been bashing nitro for 20 years and I still don't have it down completely... or at all on some days. I've learned to use the temp gun more often when breaking an engine in, then after that, I use it periodically throughout a day just to have an idea where the engine is at when it sounds and feels like it's running well. When I started, I didn't do anything regarding temp for the first year or so... then I found forums and all the "tune for 240F" suggestions and did just that for a very long time, tuned to temp. You can spend all day twisting needles tuning for temp. It can make for a very long/frustrating day!
Hello, would it be considered normal that with a galon of breakin and 1 race (33 tanks +/-) the conrod shows a bit of play on the crankpin of OS B2102 ?? Change rod, when ?? thks..
Do you guys or have you ever used a flow meter. Once you find your perfect tune for the temperature then later on you can go back to that number and set a perfect needle every time
i bought a used Ofna lx with k4.6 engine. however, it cant even run on grass at the park it got stuck, like has no power to push thru grass. it runs on pave street just fine. i don't know whats wrong with it lacked power.
Would really like a good comprehensive tuning vid from a pro like you! Would be huge for someone like me just getting into the hobby. Looking forward to seeing it!
Hi adam. My novarossi nitro engine is idling good prior to starting up But after playing abit and giving it throttle back and forth. Then i let the engine idle for 2 sec and it dies. But it idles good on the box
@@AdamDrake where can i send the video? And also when i pull the throttle slowly from idle to top speed on top of the the starterbox. It doesnt have a smooth transistion it starts good then around mid range it kinda bog abit then goes to top speed. Does this have to do with the mid range needle?
Execllent video! I've been telling people that a temp gun belongs in the trash when it comes to tuning but they just get butthurt😭 as most don't know what they are doing in the first place. Here we have a world champion racer confirming that temp gun tuning is not the best way to tune in general even if you're "just a basher" so now what? That's right people, time to learn how to actaully tune😂 This video will trigger the "tune by temp gun" loyalist that's for sure.
I'm Old school so I'm sorry for this but: Use your "EARS" ( is it ning ning ninging when pulled to idle after running hard? = to hot/ lean! Use your "EYES"( the smoke trail speaks volumes). Use your throttle stick "Senses" (is throttle instant or soft and delayed?). every engine will want to run at a different temperature, take 2 of any engine that you want (identical engs.) and put them in 2 differing but "identical cars" and the engines won't run or tune exactly the same, every engine is different and so is and most importantly every "identical" car will load the engine somewhat differently and will likely "tune" best at differing temperatures. Literally "Throw the thermometer away", all it's good for is conversation: Oh I run at 242 degrees (SO WHAT!). Again Sorry but when someone whips out a thermometer I shake my head and walk away. That's what Adam just said in so many words; temp gauge is interesting but "Don't rely on it" "there is no specific optimum temperature that fits all cars, engines, or even racetracks" there is simply "to many variables" for a thermometer to resolve anything more than "in the ball park" and the next step is? Use your "Ears, Eyes, and senses" for the fine tuning. So.... if the Ears eyes and senses are "The definitive" why do they need help getting too within the ball park????? Old School!!!!! Thank You Adam!!!!!
Robert Shaver seem like a nitro vet. Nice explanation! I like to rely on sound as sometimes your fuel can be to Smokey. @@nitro-rc6241 Wow Thank you Nitro-RC! I agree, sound offers the best "tell" and a smidge rich from peak is good advice, I probably do a double smidge in considering near empty tank (low on fuel) leaning and for my particular track which isn't clay! lol Thanks Again!

Keeping the engine warm by wrapping the head is great if the engine is tight, but I don't think it's needed if the engine is completely broke-in.
@@AdamDrake I ment for running in cold temps .. since the head is getting cool that would throw your tune off since its not running at the temp it needs right?
Yes, I understand. It's fine to do that in extremely cold conditions.

Hello, would it be considered normal that with a galon of breakin and 1 race (33 tanks +/-) the conrod shows a bit of play on the crankpin of OS B2102 ?? Change rod, when ?? thks..
It depends on the break-in process and how the engine was run over that time frame. A small amount of play is okay and normal.
Do you guys or have you ever used a flow meter. Once you find your perfect tune for the temperature then later on you can go back to that number and set a perfect needle every time

You may need a more aggressive clutch setting or lower gearing.
Question adam how many turns need to be open my hpi 15 to start tuning any help will be much appreciated
I'm not sure, I don't have any experience with the engine.
Sir what should be the max air temp for a glow AAC engine
I would try staying in the 210-220 range with AAC.
