The Nick Shabazz take on Mechanical Watches: How they work, what they can do, and what they do well

  • Today, we'll follow up on my Quartz watch video (below) and talk a bit about how mechanical watches work, what they do, what features are around, and what their strengths and weaknesses are.
    It's simplified, and the horologists are way deeper into it, but it gives you some basics for next time, where we'll talk about mechanical vs quartz for EDC, and for my upcoming review of the Sinn 104.
    Here's the Quartz Video: • The Nick Shabazz take ...
    And a great disassembly video of a movement like in the watch pictured: • How to service an auto...

    I thought you said 'mock the passage of time'.
    I have been doing that all my life by saying 'I'll do it tomorrow.
    Now I am old and not mocking now as my power reserve is too low. Only escapement is death when the movement stops.

    A really informative video well explained. I can't afford a high end watch but do have a couple of Seiko 5's with display caseback and enjoy watching the cogs and wheels moving in them making the watch look alive and more interesting, this can't be done with a quartz watch. Thanks for posting this.

    Sold my Submariner, and now am hooked on the accuracy of quartz. Any old quartz watch is stunningly accurate. So, if you don't open the watch and look inside it you shouldn't care if it's mechanical. Yes? No? Maybe? Thanks.

    Your balance wheel is weighted o that it goes back nd Roth in a natural rate. You don't show the mainspring. Based on what I see it's still unclear why the mechanism keeps returning to it first position. Without understanding how a mainspring facilitates the balance wheel, this alone behaves like a perpetual motion device. Which it isn't. So, it's not clear about this balance wheel.

    • @sclogse1
      @sclogse1 Před 7 lety

      Sorry about those typos. " so that it goes back and forth"

    • @andrewsmactips
      @andrewsmactips Před 7 lety +2

      The force of the mainspring, through the pinion of the escape wheel, gives a kick to one of the pellet jewels, and the movement of the pellet fork winds the hairspring via the roller. The other pellet jewel holds the escape wheel in check until the balance wheel swings back and the roller trips the pellet fork back the other way.
      Then repeat...

    Hey Nick! Just curious what your thoughts are on the 7750 movement? I bought this: czcams.com/video/y-tNttDIVOc/video.html a few years back and haven't had any issues but with an expensive purchase (to me), I'd like to make sure I made a good decision from someone that knows their stuff. Before owning this I used to dream about the comparable Tag Heuer version but could never afford it. This Tissot is basically the same thing but at half the price.

    Nick, I'm looking to get into watches and I have a question. How reliable are automatic mechanicals? Do I have to really worry about whether they're winding themselves properly/consistently?

    • @SohcSTi
      @SohcSTi Před 8 lety

      +Matt Boler The more you spend, the better they are. There are millionaires out there that cannot afford some auto's so put away a grand or two and you will not have to worry about it.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  Před 8 lety +2

      +Matt Boler Like Daniel said, it's all a question of cost. $500 mechanical autos will be good-to-go (think Hamilton Khaki Field). $300 Seikos should be fine. $100 no-names... maybe not.
      The Sinn is perfectly reliable as an auto, but I also walk around a fair bit. Also remember that some watches (some of the lower end Seikos) are automatic only (no manual wind), so it's gotta work well. And all of them are going to have over-wind protection, so even if you're running a marathon it should work.
      All told, the auto winding work is one of the least finicky parts of a mechanical, don't worry too much there :)

    Not a bad video. There is one fact that needs clarifying- you have to spend a lot of money to get an accurate mechanical watch. This is not true. Learn to regulate a mechanical watch yourself and you should be able to get the $50-$150 watches to run between 0-5 seconds fast a day. I have plenty of sub $100 mechanicals that are 5 seconds a day fast or better.

    why would you actually prefer such a complicated , delicate and inaccurate mechanism for timekeeping when all you really need is a quartz crystal mechanism driving a bunch of gears at one second intervals . i gave up on ridiculous mechanicals when quartz came out and proved itself far superior in almost all ways except perhaps the traditional snob appeal of big name watches like rolex and others where you pay big bucks for something you dont need to ......for just time on your wrist .

    if you have a mechanical watch you need to service it around once every ten years but you just need to be smart with it, I have a 1927 Elgin pocket watch that hasn't had any repairs for 90 years and only a few services, and it is more accurate than quartz

    • @uyt6uyt5
      @uyt6uyt5 Před 7 lety

      This infers that mechanical watch accuracy has seriously declined in the last 90 years, and this is most certainly not the case. Current mechanical watch accuracy is the best it has ever been, and there is still a significant disparity between this and the quartz watch. Please provide proof that this pocket watch is more accurate that a quarts watch.

    • @zainshaikh527
      @zainshaikh527 Před 6 lety

      Rose tinted glasses also have thier limits. I bet you watch is precious with all that history but quartz is simply the best. A $600 light powered radio (atomic clock connected) watch is infinitely more accurate compared to he most expensive of mechanicals in a decades time without looking after, beating up, and then sometimes left in a shelf for months and then back out. My $600 watch has gone through all hell and a big gash in the crown and the bezel is scratched up. Imagine me doing the same to my dad's tag or omega? It would be in pieces. The fact that I keep the watch on top of my phone all the time and have been in an ambulance getting zapped alive with it on means I should have had at least 5 huge chances for it to be beyond repair as far as I can remember. My left wrist and both knuckles, where my hand rests has a huge scar on it. Getting into fights as a teen and under 21 was a rough time. My diver Swiss shit it self. The Casio I've been mentioning was my graduation present, has stood the test of time and we'll worth every penny. Japanese movement is fantastic aside from all the high tech radio control, perpetual calendar mess, and the time zone changes. I still wear it despite just a week ago buying my sexy hybrid mechanical watch

      Not a particularly good analogy. It's more like quartz is a modern electric train, and mechanical is a steam train, and this metaphor would only hold true if steam train technology had continued to improve alongside modern trains giving us beautiful examples of 21st century luxury oriented steam trains. How cool would that have been? Well, that's what we get with the best of modern day mechanical watches.
