Jonah @ 120 kgs (265lbs) & 1.96 m (6.5ft) was a monster and could run 100mtrs in 10.8secs!.. Dallas Cowboys tried signing him as a running back in the 90s but the lure of wearing the All Black jersey and the money he was already on wasn't enough to persuade him to leave. RIP legend!

The "highlight" of my rugby career was being dragged about 50 yards by him while I was trying to tackle him. Eventually his cleat came off about 5 yards from the try line & I just sat there holding it for him. On his way back after scoring he patted me on the back & said "nice try bro." He was not only a monster, he was FAST. RIP big fella.
That didn’t happen. No one who plays rugby calls them cleats.
@@callumcampbell4746 I moved to Canada in 2002. Everyone I've played with here calls them cleats. Same in the US. Back in NZ we called them boots, but these guys being in NA I went with a term that's more familiar to them.

As an American, I don't watch Rugby. I did see a few of his games just to get what exactly Rugby is... then his funeral popped up. I was like wtf? Most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.... I cried like a baby.... It was that beautiful.

The New Zealand All Blacks 🇳🇿 are one of the most dominant rugby 🏉 teams on the planet. Jonah Lomu was 6' 5" 265lbs of Tongan descent and played wing, similar to a fullback in American football.
Lomu was tested once as having amongst the fastest take off speeds of any athlete in the world over those initial few metres .
Factor in that your average sprinter is around 80kg and Jonah around 120kg..
Imagine that initial burst and trying to tackle him one on one after he has momentum. And he needed little space to get going.
Jonah was 6ft 5 20st and could run the 100meters in 10.8 seconds he was a machine❤
I was a teenager when I saw Jonah run over that poor English guy in the 95 world cup in South Africa, I was screaming my heart out and jumping on my bed at 3am in the morning and was in disbelief of what I just saw, and I was use to seeing Jonah do awesome things but we all knew that was a special moment in history. R.I.P legend!!!!
Some of his good tries from world cups but my memory has him scoring some better tries than seen in this video, I think if they included some of his super rugby tries you would see how dominant he really was.
The amazing thing is that France came back to win that game, one of the biggest upsets in RWC history.. One pronounce his surname Loooomu (as in horse), with the accent on the first syllable. Sadly missed, he passed away in 2015 after battling a kidney disease for many years. He was feared and respected by his opponents.
Yes, only the damned French. They panicked every time jonah got the ball, but when they’re not under pressure they can play inspired rugby, that and the all blacks choked. Come next game, all of a sudden there are high expectations on the French and they go missing and get soundly beaten.
I was watching Jonah, Tana Umaga and Christian Cullen playing Daytona at the arcades in the 90's and every time Jonah turned the steering wheel left and right the whole machine would tilt left and right literally bashing each machine on either side he was a monster in size and strength.
Timeout was my second home in the 90s ... those were the days. I was addicted to Daytona. I'm pretty sure I was one of the major investors in that game 🤦♂ Was that in Auckland for the ABs or Wellington for the Canes? I bumped into Jeff Wilson in the Custom St Timeout after an ABs Test.

R.I.P to the greatest IMO. What helps put his greatest into perspective is that he played virtually most his international career with a serious illness. You must watch the Haka at his funeral.
Jonah was a left wing, no 11. I'm a South African and I agree, he was the greatest winger of our game. He was part of a star studded All Blacks. Jonah-left wing, Jeff Wilson-right wing and the goat, Christian Cullen - Fullback.
Jonah started his test career at 118kgs ~260lbs and im sure was heavier than that as his career progressed ,maybe 270-275 lean and muscled at his peak.
In that era typical rugby wingers were 200lbs or less apart from the odd exception eg Tuigemala

The most feared number 11 (Wing) in the world during his time. Someone will correct me if I am wrong but apparently, the only international team he never scored a try against was South Africa (Boks) however, he still caused problems for the defence and was often used as a decoy and create space for his teammates to score

Rugby Union teams are split into 2 groups, forwards (larger units who set the scrum and lineouts) and backs, (used to be smaller, though todays backs are the size of yesteryears forwards), of which Jonah was the left wing, #11, playing on the edges. In the 2nd half of his career he battled a severe kidney disorder that severely impacted his abilities, and for a long time he was reluctant to even let his coaches and team-mates know about it.
8:53 Yep. In rugby you want to pull the defence into the middle of the pitch as best you can to create space for the wingers, and then move the ball out to them as fast as possible.

Jonah played wing. It is quite unusual for someone so big to play wing, but he was big, agile and fast- an unbeatable combination.

I swear a few of those guys from that era were actually some of those space-travelling Predators who decided to stay after their last hunt and blend in somewhere in the South Pacific. Watch Tana Umaga leading the Haka. A legit time-travelling warrior.

Lomu on occasion during his playing career , was bought down by a single player, but that was when a player was close enough to stop him, before he got up to top speed, because usually it would take five or six to bring him down

Yeah, 6ft 5 and 265lbs - imagine THAT hitting you at the speed he could run. You'd often saw it took 5 or 6 men to take him down. When he got the ball, 9 times out of ten it was to the house!!

"Made the others look like little boys"😅 in 95 he would have been one of the youngest on the field. As a schoolboy he played in the forwards at 8 and would have been a rugby great there too. At senior level he was swapped to wing and became a legend. The first real huge winger; pace, a big step, a vicious hand off, massive and loves to score. This is why he looks like a man among boys. Most international teams try to get a lomu type player in their backline, none will ever quite fill his boots. RIP Jona Lomu ✌

Jonah Lomu position was winger, his jersey number was 11. He was from a Tongan background and was born in New Zealand. He started playing for all blacks in 1994 RWC at 19 years old. In 1995 All blacks sadly lost the RWC in the Finals against South Africa. He was one of the best superstar rugby legend in the world. What made Jonah Lomu different was that he was big and he was fast, but he actually had wonderful evasive skills. He was the youngest out of all the All Blacks. He was the youngest player to score 10 Test match tries and the first to score 12 Test match tries in a year. He also held numerous world cup records.

Yes jonah was moved to the wing originally was a forward in rugby league n moved to wing when asked to trial in rugby union for the All Blacks.
Numbers 1-8 are forwards, 9-15 are backs and 16-23 are the reserves. So you have a forward pack that competes the scrums, line outs, rocks and mauls. Then you have a back line who are your runners, game players and speedsters. Numbers 11 and 14 are your speedsters, known as wingers. Jonah Lomu is a winger. Their main role is to score the tries.

Number 11 is always the left wing. The only time he may have a number above 15 is if he was on the reserve bench at the start of the game. That last try is iconic and never gets old.
HI there from NZ. Check out Wikipedia on Jonah if you want. Yes he was playing WING. Number 11 and 14 are the left and right wings. The All blacks try to have one heavier crash WING. He started playing at number 8 at the back of the scrum in the forwards, but showed his speed and power at a young age and got shifted to the wing. He improvised his weight training equipment at home by lifting a car engine onto his shiulders and squatting with it. Jonah is still the youngest All Black ever at 19yrs and 45days. Jonah was 117-120kgs (257-264lbs) fit and ran a 10.6sec 100m. He had the fastest acceleration of the All blacks over 10 metres (10.93 yards) at the time. If he got on the outside of an opposing player he was very rarely stopped. He was the first Rugby superstar in the professional era, but remained very humble and quietly spoken. He battled a kidney disease in his latter years of playing. He sadly surcumbed to a blood clot on a return flight after the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England which the All Blacks won. He was just 40 yrs old. His funeral was very moving with a Haka performed by many of the past and present great All Blacks.
In the 1995 World Cup he was young fast strong and healthy . In the 99 world cup when the all blacks were devastated and humiliated by France Jonah stayed after the game and congratulated each French player while most of he’s team walked away

Yes, he played Wing. Aside : the rumour is that to play wing for New Zealand you have to be able to run the 100 metres in under 11 seconds. ( 100 metres is roughly 110 yards )
Jonah started as a loose forward, mainly no. 8 but then was moved to the wing. Little did people know though, he suffered from kidney disease most of his life, it progressively go worse. He never got over 50% of his best when he first got to the All Blacks, at times it took all his willpower just to get out of bed, let alone go to training ... or a game

If the first defender attacks the ball, the ball carriers' focus would then divert to protecting the ball, in turn lowering his first priority of potential forward advancement, resulting in a tackle or either making him attrmpt to give the ball up to a teammate

Rugby Union is a game of forwards, who would be like linemen in American football, and backs, who are analogous to gridiron's backfield. The backs are subdivided into half-backs, three-quarter backs and a single full-back. Lomu played as a left-side wing three-quarter AKA left winger but, at 6'5" and around 265lbs, was unusually large to play in a position usually occupied by the agile and fleet-footed. As a matter of fact, 6'5" and 265lbs is large for any back but, uniquely for a player with his size, he possessed the requisite speed and acceleration to play on the wing. This was a big problem for the average sized opposition backs tasked to bring him down, mostly unsuccessfully, when he had the ball. The big forwards who maybe could stop him could never catch him and the fast but small backs who maybe could catch him could never stop him. I played winger in rugby and defensive back in American football but, at 5'11" and maybe 180lbs at my peak, if I decided to tackle an in-stride Jonah Lomu, I would feel like I did well if he even noticed.
Those "other" guys that were being swatted like fly's were not small guys, most were in the 15-18 stones range.

In Rugby Union and Rugby League, from early on playing these similar great games, position selection is based on skills and size. Your fastest players were often selected to play in the backs. Big solid hulky and tall guys, in the forwards (scrums etc...). Jonah could've played anywhere except ''wing'' was his most lethal position. Delivering the ball to him in front and at pace. So wingers were usually the fastest in the team. Good wingers always wanted to play against the best the opposition teams had and to take on their opponents one on one. So if you were an inside back, your job was to deliver the ball as quickly as possible across the backline to your attacking weapons, your wingers. There are two wingers, left and right side. Simple game plan here. Get it to Jonah (the Greatest Winger).
he was a winger. he was the real big man to play wing and could run really fast. normally they were small really fast sprinter types. an amazing player and to think he would play but was having health issues a lot of the time. i think it was kidney problems. rip big man jonah.
In the 1995 final Lomu hardly featured as James Small thwarted the big man time and time again.

Now, after seeing that frame where you froze it around 7:45 I realized that might be wrong. Look again. Look at the ball. It's loose.
Just before where you froze it you cannot see the ball because the post is in the way and it is that exact instance in time that Blue 15 'bounces away' from Jonah. I think that he actually made a play, not for Jonah but for the ball. Looks like he managed to get it loose but not away.
I think he was making an 'effort'.
Just went back and looked at before the ball goes behind the post.

BJ Jonah Lomu played in 2 Rugby World Cups . His last World cup appearance was against the French in 1999. He scored twice but after the 2nd try the French just shut him right down . The NZ v France game was a classic , with the French winning 43 - 31

as well, ''Jason" Taumalolo is good example he has played for New Zealand as well as for Tonga & has heritage with both , rugby League in Australia is mostly played

Lomu was a winger. Which at that time was usually your small fast finishers. He literally was the first of his kind playing with such size and power especially in his position. To think he was very unwell most of his career with cancer which unfortunately got him in the end. So young. He used to come into my Work about 10 years ago with his poodle. He was absolutely massive

Position is called “wing”. There are two. They line up along ng each sideline and do most of the scoring.They’re usually the fastest n the fiel. Jonah could run 100 meters in 10.8 seconds. He was 6’5” and weighed 265 pounds. Dallas Cowboys offered him a $10 million signing bonus, but he wasn’t interested.
These are only tries scored at the Rugby World Cup. He has even better tries in regular international matches

Ok, First of all, I understand language differences, and not to be too critical, but the the correct way to address Jonah's surname is lomu. he is not French. He is a New Zealander of Tongan decent. Second, the position he played in the All blacks was left wing. He played most of his rugby in this position, although I understand he played center for his high school, Wesley Collage Auckland, and I stand to be corrected, for his NPC side, Counties Manukau. He was one of the greats of rugby. A legend in his own right. Sadly he lost his battle from kidney problems and passed away far too young. Rest in peace Jonah. You are a legend. THE GREATEST LEFT LING EVER.
