Autumn festival in Matsuyama a real smash as portable shrines are charged at each other

Video footage taken on Oct. 7 during the final day of the Matsuyama Chiho Matsuri autumn festival in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, shows the highlight event as teams bearing portable shrines from two local shrines paired off to charge at each other and butt their palanquins against together in front of Dogo Onsen Station. Nine participants were injured during the action of the ”hachiawase” (head-butting) battles by late afternoon, according to local fire department. The video footage was taken by Takumi Terui of The Asahi Shimbun.
