Johnny Cox is my uncle. I'm so grateful for this video. I was born about a month before his last game as a wildcat so I really never got to see him play. Of course, I've heard the stories all my life... but getting to see him in action is quite a treat!!!
Elgin Baylor, senior season at Seattle University: 32 points and 19 rebounds a game, on 50% shooting.
A friend of mine attended this game as a 15-year-old, buying his ticket _at the gate,_ believe it or not. The NCAA final 4 was not a guaranteed sell out yet.
My friend said Adolph Rupp ordered the Wildcats to force Elgin Baylor to the left, because scouting films showed he loved to drive to his right.
I joked that this was the beginning of movement to the left on college campuses. 😉
Quite possibly the first UK game my dear father was able to view. If he wasn't already a dedicated UK basketball fan before this game, he certainly was from this game onward. Dad died in 1983 but that fandom within our family still exists today with me and my son and daughter.
It's called BBN bro! It reaches all parts of world! This is what makes Kentucky Wildcat 🏀 sports best fan base! If your big blue fan you pass it from 1 generation to next! You share stories, memories, and where the 👑 's of collage 🏀!!!!
Stall Ball. Get lead and play keep away. They definitely improved the game when they introduced the shot clock!
84-72 and you call it stall ball
Not really stall ball in this game, but the shot clock was a great idea. It thankfully put an end to Dean Smith and that cowardly, lame ass four corners BS.
@allinfun829 totally agree
I rememebr watching in the late 70s and 80s as a kid. We had a tv and 5 or 6 friends of my dads would come over and watch the UK game. Great memories
Great to see the film of this overachieving Wildcat team & great to hear Claude Sullivan's voice
Kentucky basketball and overachieving should never be said in the same sentence. They always get the top talent.
As a basketball coach that was amazing. The game has really changed in so many ways.
Todays basketball resembles more of a mix between basketball and football compared to the old days. Thanks for posting a real treat to watch. I grew up with the jump ball, the possession arrow is for the birds.
It’s hard to believe that after this great season, Seattle U. disappeared as a basketball power. Eligin Baylor was one of the very best ball players of all time - maybe the best. It just seemed that there was no one else on that team, and the recruiting coup that got Elgin from Washington, D.C. was not followed upon.
Two other universities in the city have arisen from time to time - Pacific and the University of Washington, while Seattle U. has been dormant in the sport.
LOVED this...thank you!!!
Thank you for uploading this
Wonderful !! GO BIG BLUE
These set shots are insane. I thought that the game had advanced beyond that by this time.
thank you for posting this ukyarchives.
I always wondered what players of that era would think if they could see todays game. Unreal watching a game where there is almost no physical contact.
The very first thing they would notice is that it bares very little resemblance to actual basketball.
they would think it’s pathetic and soft as it is
@patek9789 they would notice how fast it is...this is basically a chess match
love the team benches at the end of the court as opposed to the sideline.....😁
Kentucky still using the underhand shooting on free throws, and not much jumping when throwing long. Seattle more modern. It was a transitional time.
In the Semifinals Vernon Hatton hit a half court shot at the end to tie Temple and UK would prevail.
Look at that grandma free throw boyyyyy
Classic
They called it 2 handed. Lol
@@captainmarvel9610 I like grandma shot better 😭😂
How many teams are in the NCAA back then? I'm curious to know
"He's a one hand free throw shooter!"
It's like watching a 6-8 year old league only they can dribble, kinda.
Is this Rupp Runts team?
How weird is it that Elgin Baylor dies, 63 years to the day after this game? May he rest in peace.
they were unknowingly shooting 3 pointers....
Where was the game played?
Freedom Hall
Heavy
GBB!!!
Refs had the same clothes for years
Ok my fault elgin Baylor
Baylor used to shoot free throws with one hand !?!? What the f*** is happening 😂😂😂
Seattle's team has a terrible offense.
Why are they shooting from deep with no 3 point line!?
22:43 These refs suck
Omg it's like watching an elementary school game today! Wow I'm shocked how terrible Elgin Baylor was
He was in foul trouble and they didn't have much talent besides him.
He wasn't terrible
Its called evolution dude
@@anthonytaylor7928 you are right it's just interesting and crazy how far the game has progressed. Imagine 50 yrs from now, how will today's game look?
No, they are good, they can easily comfortable in D2 or D3 today
Were they any black players in this game?
Seattle had three. Baylor, Saunders and another I dont know
@@roberttaylor914 Charlie Brown was the other.
Could you imagine Shaq walking on the floor during this time.
It was in black and white...cmon man
The last lily-white Kentucky team to win a championship. Horrifically, the world had to wait until 1969 for the last all white championship football team.
wtf?? As a white man, I'm sickened by this comment. Can't believe someone would even utter such a sentence so casually in 2023.
As an American, I'm sickened that in my lifetime there were still these disgusting segregationist policies. Instead of our country becoming united, they did everything they could to prevent societal unity, trying to preserve a past that a half million men had to die to try to end. NOTHING I said was "casual". Jim crow was a cancer to this nation!@@sliimeY2K
Guys couldn't shoot a lick. Even Baylor... and I know he's an all time great.
