  • This video records Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group's "authentic and well-researched" presentation of "Solotan (Maranao Suite)" at Pasinaya 2014 last March 16, 2014.
    Special thanks to the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group (ROFG).
    Synopsis: Enthronement Ritual
    Similar to the rituals of sultanate in Brunei and Malaysia, "Solotan (Maranao Suite)" presents the enthronement process and components of the Lanao sultanate. Rituals, festivities (games) and dances (singkil) form part of the proclamation process.
    Lanao has 4 sultanates that are represented in the enthronement ritual. Reigning Sultans are invited to participate in the rites for the new Sultan. The presentation of the "Kris (sword)" signifies the formal installation of the Sultan.
    The video begins with the game Sepak Takraw and ends with the Singkil performance by the children of the new Sultan.
    Uploader's Note: THIS VIDEO IS NOT INTENDED AND MUST NOT BE USED FOR INSTRUCTIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS. It serves to document and feature ROFG Pasinaya 2014 program only.

      @@iamnoone348 What do you mean by "only lowland dances were preserved"?
      This dance is part of the Darangen epic of the Maranao tribe and is enlisted in UNESCO's intangible heritage list together with Hudhud of the Cordillera.
      None of the lowland dances were enlisted despite their cultural significance like Darangen and Hudhud.

    Hi can you please provide a step by step process in choosing the Sulutan? / Process of enthronement? Some says it is based on weath , royal blood lineafe etc. But others also says that , it is based on the wittiness & willingness of the person and that he has lived and known the place for a long time? :) I can't find any article on the net.. Thanks!

      @KonsyertoPinoy  Před 7 lety +1

      A sultan is similar to a king. So a Sultan usually inherits the throne via blood/family lineage. The enthronement process depends on tradition for a country or a sultanate. Historians/Culture specialists could help you on this matter. As far as the net, you can search for "choosing a sultan" for a start. :)

    Filipinos when they attend events like this have a tendency to be noisy and carry on with their conversations. It's kind of rude. If you do this in the States or Europe, you will be escorted out of the venue by the usher.

      Filipinos, like all Filipinos? Excuse me. I attended a performance last week and the crowd wasn't like this.
