  • This was a great film. Another cult classic which I believe will grow beyond its cult status to be just a classic. Alex Proyas was excellent in his direction. Brandon Lee, sadly, gives the performance of his life. The story and the visuals and the music was just great. I can’t believe I skipped this when I was younger. Actually, I’m kind of glad, because I appreciate it way more now than I would have if I watched it when I was a teenager. I highly recommend this film for anybody of age.

11:20 One of my favourite parts of the movie is that scene with T-Bird. First he is like happy "I know you. I knew I knew you." but then his voice changes to disbelieve "But you ain't you..." and then he goes to anger and horror and sadness. I like the acting there. I almost feel sorry for T-Bird in that scene.

James O'Barr wrote the comic when he was getting over the death of his wife who died in a car crash and he was in a very dark place. I would consider it a supernatural revenge film more than a superhero film. Just because something used to be a comic doesn't automatically mean it is about superheros. Odin, my boy here, LOVES Crows!
He waits for them to come - we feed a murder of about 6 -8 of them every day at 16:00.. along with some other small wildlife feeders, Odin loves to watch the wildlife..
Instead of try to chase the crows off, I showed them where I would put peanuts (Crows LOVE peanuts) for them.. took less than a WEEK..
Now they come by and one by one fly down to their bowl- bran their peanut, squeak a “thanks Odin!” and head off ‘till tomorrow!
      I love seeing them.
I have spine and orthopedic injuries so it’s challenging to do a lot-
Feeding the crows has become an important part of our daily life and we’d certainly miss them of they decided to stop coming by.
      But quality is more important.
He REALLY gets excited for the crows.
      He literally- waits-
Will not move, go on a walk, forget it.
Every day at 16:00 those ebony winged rock stars noisily arrive and Odin just loves it!
His barking initially spooked then, now I think they deliberately prolong their “base to final” just to hear my boy bellow his approval!
      They are giant HAMS!

    FUN TRIVIA
Brandon Lee died during a mishap on the set. A scene required a gun to be loaded, cocked, and then pointed at the camera. Because of the close-range of the shot, the dummy cartridges loaded had real brass caps, bullet, but no powder. After the cut, the props master (not the arms master - he had left the set for the day) dry-fired the gun to get the cock off, knocking the projectile/bullet into the barrel of the gun. The next scene to be filmed involving that gun was the rape of Shelly. The gun was loaded with blanks (which usually contain double or triple the powder of a normal cartridge to make a loud noise). Lee entered the set carrying a bag of groceries containing an explosive blood pack. The script called for Funboy (Michael Massee) to shoot Eric Draven (Lee) as he entered the room, triggering the blood pack. The bullet that was stuck in the barrel was blasted at Lee through the bag he was carrying, killing him. The footage of his death was subsequently developed and used as evidence in the investigation into his death. As part of the lawsuit settlement, the footage was later destroyed. Lee is the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, who died in mysterious circumstances before completing Game of Death (1978). See also Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993).
(at around 26 mins) According to Jon Polito, Brandon Lee cut himself when he broke the glass in Gideon's shop. The glass was breakaway glass and it is very rare for anyone to get cut by it. Polito said that he told Lee that he feared Lee would die in an on-set accident like Vic Morrow did during filming of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). Unfortunately, Polito's prediction turned out to be true
Although he was not at fault for the death of Brandon Lee, Michael Massee stopped acting for a year because he was so traumatized by the incident. (His next film was a small role in Seven (1995).) Up until his death in 2016, he had never watched the film.
According to James O'Barr, he didn't like casting Brandon Lee as the main lead for his comic-book adaptation. At that time he had only seen him in Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) and feared it would end up like a Kung Fu movie and go straight to video. But he was thrilled when he first met Brandon on the set with the makeup and Crow outfit. He was amazed by Brandon's take on the character when he spoke the exact lines from the comics.
There were several accidents that befell the production crew, leading to a widespread belief that the film was cursed. A carpenter suffered serious burns on his upper body during the first day of filming; a manual worker had a screwdriver get embedded in his hand; an equipment truck burst into flames; a stuntman broke several ribs after falling through a roof; a rigger was horribly electrocuted; a disgruntled set sculptor went beserk and drove his car through the props room destroying it; and a hurricane destroyed several of the sets.
Before Brandon Lee passed away, there was a plotline being filmed that involved a character called 'The Skull Cowboy'. The backstory of the cowboy was that he was someone who was in a similar position to Eric Draven's (the main character) at some point in time, but who failed to obtain his own revenge, and now acts as a guide to all the lost souls who are stuck in the land of the living. Whether the cowboy failed to obtain revenge or failed to return to his grave after obtaining said revenge is unknown, but he knows the rules that the souls who are stuck in limbo must follow if they want to cross over. In deleted scenes, the cowboy would warn Eric Draven that if he did anything outside of seeking revenge against his killers that he would lose his powers and risk being stuck in the land of the living as well.
The production didn't have the money-or the space-to shoot a car chase sequence, so they did it with miniatures instead

Brandon was a great actor, and apparently very committed to the role; he lay with bags of ice packed around his body in order to experience what it was like to be dead and buried, until the director told him to stop it in case he got sick. Ironically the scene where he died was the one where his character dies (the first time), and he was only about a month away from getting married to his real life fiancé. RIP

IF i remember correctly, the "transformation scene" in the beginning where we see Eric's face only when lightning strikes, was made with CGI and a body double.
A body double was also used in the smashing of the guitar and in the scene where he tells Sarah "I understand".
Same goes for the scene where he enters the policeman's car and exits shortly after.
It was a damn shame, Brandon Lee had enormous potential.

Ah, such a good movie! I feel like Strange Days is the iconic cyberpunk film of the 90s (I know, I love the Matrix too, but hear me out). It has a certain frenetic worry about it, it's about the end of an era and the beginning of a new one, the perfect y2k movie. I absolutely love its grit and hopefulness. It's not surprising it never got popular though. It's not particularly action-packed. I feel like Blade Runner 2049 is the closest analog we have in modern films.

The footage shot for the movie was around 90-95% completed when Brandon Lee died from the on-set accident. The sequence where his character Eric is resurrected and arrives at his crime scene apartment , having flashbacks of the murder, then becoming the crow were all part of the remaining shoots (and some reshoots) they needed to complete the film. You can see were a body double was used in those scenes. And the epic Crow facepaint reveal shot used facial mapping to overlay on the body double

In an interview about the film, Brandon said that he'd done films with violence before, but that he'd never done one where he felt the violence was **as** justified as it was here. And seeing the state of things in the film it's easy to agree.

First off, thanks for reacting to my favorite film.
Secondly, you asked how much of his part Brandon shot before the accident that tragically claimed his life. The answer was about 75-80%.
When filming resumed, most of what remained was shot using his doubles, Chad Stahelski, and Jeff Cadiente.
Also, the birds used were not Crows, but rather Ravens, trained by Larry Madrid. Ravens were used because they look very similar to their crow cousins, but are larger, smarter, and somewhat easier to train. 5 ravens were used, based on their individual strengths depending on need. The lead raven's name was Magic, and it was that bird used in most of the close ups and in interactions with the actors.

I watched the dvd commentary and and it provided some insights. The mob boss's father was a vietnam vet who passed his ptsd to his kids. The eye witch sister lover, if I remember right, had her first memory seeing her village napalmed. It was the first thing she saw with her eyes. The fires started as his way to show his love for her as a revenge on the west. He was also going through a midlife crisis too lol. Originally they were going to do several films making him more of a superhero. He would be reunited with her at the very final end. Some of the same minor characters came back in very inferior sequels. Though they did explain more of the crow mythos however. The comic was based on the loss of the writer's loss of his lover and it was more about the pain and anger of his experiences. Speaking of seeing through animal eyes, I recommend the BEASTMASTER. Basically imagine Conan the Barbarian meets Dr. Dolittle, with the psychic crow powers.

As I mentioned on your Dark City review, Proyas got his start directing music videos. He did the video for Crowded House's 'Don't Dream it's Over'. And that video is full of scrapbooks, photos, pictures. All things people use to remind themselves of other times. Dark City hinged on memory and identity. And here, memory is literally the weapon used to defeat the villain.
I think it's safe to say that the importance of memory is a subject that's never very far from Proyas's thoughts.

Batman 1989 was a visual game-changer, & this is one of its offspring. The little girl stole the show, and the Ghostbuster's lowkey performance was really cool. I like the witch and the main heavy too. The part where Eric uses instant karma on him is satisfyingly creative. Top Dog's[?]voice is awesome, & the film's dialogue is overlooked. The panicked, 'This is the really-real world, man!' is an all-time memorable line for me.
This is not my kind of movie, but I really like it and it is strangely rewatchable. It's straightforward yet somehow mysterious how it works its magic on you. Like it's more than the sum of its parts.

Excellent reaction video. You know how to appreciate a movie like this better than the majority of other ditzy and/or wisecracking "reactors." As for how much of the film was done after Brandon Lee's death--if you'll take another look, ALL of the scenes in Eric's ruined apartment and on the roof are done by a stand-in. Brandon Lee's face is superimposed in the shot of him standing in the window illuminated by lightning flashes. Rather than a detriment, I consider this a plus in making his character more shadowy and mysterious in those scenes. The shot of Eric entering the building is done by taking a different shot of him stumbling down an alley in the rain and superimposing the figure in the building's doorway.

When he died, Chad Stahelski was his stand-in double for some of the remaining footage to be shot that involved Eric Draven. Chad was an instructor at the Academy and is a very talented, well-rounded martial artist who went on to develop John Wick along with David Leitch (one of his training partners and friend who I also remember doing some training at the Academy).

A great kind of English Romantic comic, and I think one of the greatest films ever made, with one Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee; further, Brandon died making this film by a gunshot accident on-set, aged just 28, and Bruce Lee had died back in 1973 at age 32. Also, the great music in this film comes from the band, The Cure.

Some bits were cut for pacing, such as any injuries Eric got from deviating from his revenge path.
*Sarah's mom cut him a few times on the arms, back, and the wounds didn't heal, because Darla and Sara were not part of his purpose.. That's why Eric started wearing the black tape.*
The Skull Cowboy ( a deleted character who was also a guide for Eric) told Eric at the doors to the church that the revenge was done and if he went to save Sarah he would have no powers. The Cowboy was also someone who had been resurrected in the past, and also chose to deviate from his vengeance path, and is now cursed.

Some of the scenes where it isnt Brandon are: The scene where Draven enters his old apartment after coming back from the dead. Brandon was added digitally from the previous scene where he’s walking trough the alley, this is why he’s covered in raindrops.
Bassically all the sequences of the apartment was made with doubles. The scene where he is dressing up and painting his face was made with a double, and the reflections of his face in the mirror where digitally added. Eric’s death flashbacks (in red) were made with a double, you can never see Brandon’s face. When Eric is all dressed up and walks to the window with the crow in his shoulder, that was a body double, the face of Brandon was added digitally and can be seen in the moment of the lightening strikes.
When Sarah goes to the apartment and finally finds Eric, it’s a body double who hugged her. Sadly, the scene of Eric playing guitar in the rooftop. When Eric kills T-Bird, he nevers speaks or is shown besides T-Bird, his face looking down “at him” was from a deleted scene.
When Eric is escaping from Top Dollar’s office from the cops trough the rooftops, was a body double.
