    I want to thank you for confirming what my instincts were telling me. I am in North Central Victoria, Australia, and all the Banana Advice was "Full Sun". My gut was saying "No! Those are big leaves and they're going to have massive transpiration. THEY'LL NEED SHADE!!!" I planted a Cavendish in the shade of a Peppercorn Tree, in a bog garden among the arrowroots. I figured that the Arrowroots were doing well there, so probably the Banana would also do well. I call it a bog garden, but actually, it's not a full bog. It's a leaky concrete (former) fishpond that I filled with composted horse manure. So, it slows water but doesn't hold water! I tried fixing it, repeatedly, but it was never any good, so I converted it to a "bog garden", but not one that actually floods!
    It has only been about a week or 10 days since I planted the banana there, but it is doing well, no signs of stress, and new growth.
    I also planted a Blue Java Banana in an overflow of another bog garden, on the northeast side of my house (warm spot) and a Lady Finger in a greywater disposal place, sheltered by four-foot tall mugwort plants and five-foot tall arrowroots! Fertilization is with horse manure, fresh out of the stable, a barrow load on each plant, except for the one in the "fishpond", which is growing in composted horse manure, rich with worms and black as the Ace of Spades!
    We get -5C frosts here in the Winter, but I'm guessing that if I pile lots of fresh horse dung around the base of each plant (not touching the trunk) it will create a micro-climate island of warmth, which will stop the frost from setting it back. Also, planting them in the "warm spots" and in the understorey of the food forest will help as well.

    Hi Jay - Awesome looking plants. Do you use all the bananas you grow or do/would you sell a hand or two? I've been inspired by your channel and the Phoenix Fruit growers group on Facebook and am slowly planting out my front yard in downtown Phoenix with bananas and fruit trees. But in the mean time I am dying to try a banana that DIDN'T come from the grocery store!

    Awesome and good to see that Bananas are possible in Phoenix. I just transplanted a pup from a friend's garden to my garden a few months ago, now under a shade and doing well :). It is put quite a bit of growth already, about 7-8 feet. Now I am wondering how long does it take or did yours take to produce the first set of fruit. Thank you!

    Can you grow a banana plant in a large pot? I was gifted an ice cream banana plant seedling and definitely don't have the room to put it in the ground later on.

    If you ever drive through Dudleyville Az take the main Rd. There is a banana plant clump growing about 10 ft across in someone's yard. You can't miss it.

    If you can grow fruit bearing banana trees in Phoenix, wouldn't I also be able to plant a banana tree that bears fruit in Henderson, Nevada?

    This is my late grandfathers banana 🍌 farm which is located near the New South Wales/Queensland border in Australia :-
    www.domain.com.au/property-profile/194-palmwoods-road-palmwoods-nsw-2482
    He grew them commercially from 1950,the hilly area & rich volcanic red soil made it a very good draining soil to plant bananas on,he did fertilize them chemically & when it wasn't raining he would turn the sprinklers on for 72 hours to water them.
    The added bonus of that area is it's a fairly high rainfall area, the sprinklers were gravity fed water from a reservoir which is supplied by the local creek.
    He came over from Gisborne in New Zealand which is near Ormond which is a banana 🍌 growing area there with his father, brothers,etc when he was a child to Adelaide in South Australia,they travelled around a lot & they ended up moving up to where he used to live until he died of old age at almost 98 years of age in 2017.
    Their average summer rainfall is about 200 millimetres whereas ours is about half that near Newcastle where I live which is just north of Sydney.
    They will grow down my way but it isn't commercially viable, it's got nothing to do with the climate because Newcastle is warmer than the banana 🍌 growing area of New Zealand which is just as cool as Victoria & Tasmania in Australia.
    Note he was never an advocate for organic banana 🍌 farming because he said that their crop yield wasn't as high as his was !

    Great looking bananas! I have heard that all bananas are clones and even that all apples are clones. Are there some types of bananas and apples that are not clones?

    • @WizBoots
      @WizBoots Před 4 lety +1

      Only type of bananas left that aren't clones are those that are grown from seed , bananas used to have seeds until we as humans bred them to become seedless for eating quality.

    • @gardencraver7918
      @gardencraver7918 Před 4 lety +2

      Bananas also grow from pups which is basically a shoot from the root. Bananas still do produce seeds in cloned varieties but us very very rare.

    Hey I live down in Tucson, I see a lot of plants you have that I would love to buy, I'm not sure if you still propagate plants like you did in 2018 with the mulberries and figs, could I send you an email or a text? Message me please, I would drive to you obviously!
