Cardiff is the capital of Wales, the neighbouring country to England. And in American terms, Rose’s disappointment is explainable by it being akin to being promised a weekend in Miami or Malibu, and arriving somewhere like Missouri or Iowa instead.
I think it was really smart to get a modern day, future, and past episode for the first 3 eps of Nuwho. Really shows the scope of the show and hooks new viewers. Loved the reaction as always : ) Chris Eccleston really is one of the best doctors ever!!
Eve Myles (Gwyneth) is so good here. If you get into Torchwood (a DW spin-off, wonderful and wild), she plays Gwen, one of the leads there, and in-universe her character is from Gwyneth's bloodline. She's an amazing actor, and her character is delightfully complex.
I watch almost every Doctor Who reactor, and you are definitely one of the most entertaining to watch! Your emotions and expressions are delightful, and I hope you’re enjoying our show as much as we do! Welcome to being a Whovian!!
It was cut out of the reaction, but Charles mentions wanting to write about a character called Edwin Drood, which is based on the last thing Dickens ever wrote, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. What was the mystery? We have no idea, it was an unfinished manuscript so he never got to finish the story, so this is Doctor Who’s way of trying to provide an answer to that question.
I recommend the completion of the novel done by Leon Garfield, but there are others as well. There was a society of "Droodists" who addressed the question (I'm not sure whether they are still active).
I am soooo happy with your discussion over Rose, the Doctor, and the show overall! I recently started watching the show with my dad and it’s become a comfort for us, even if every single episode feels like it’s a nail-biting thriller until the end.
Great reactions so far! 😊 The TARDIS has potentially infinite space inside. There is a huge wardrobe, a library, a swimming pool, bedrooms and whatever else is required. Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Doctor Who is filmed there and it shows up as a setting a few times. It is seen as a bit of a dull backwater compared to London and other larger cities.
Glad you liked this story. For me, it was the best of the three that had been transmitted at that time back in 2005. The writer of The Unquiet Dead is Mark Gatiss, an actor probably best remembered for playing a number of different roles in a darkly satirical British TV comedy programme called The League of Gentlemen. Gatiss was (and still is), a huge Doctor Who fan, having grown up with the programme during the third Doctor’s era (1970 - 1974). After the classic series of Doctor Who (1963 - 1989) was cancelled during the end of the 1980’s, Gatiss was just one of many fans who would write original Doctor Who stories as novels, in an attempt to keep fandom and the show’s legacy going, eternally hopeful that the show might be brought back one day. When the BBC announced the show’s return in 2004, the new series show runner and head writer, Russell T. Davies (also a big fan of classic Who) asked Gatiss if he would be interested in writing for the new series, to which he replied that he would, and from those initial discussions came the story idea for The Unquiet Dead. Gatiss went on from this story to write future NuWho TV stories and has also appeared in the new series as an actor, playing two different parts in two separate stories, though neither of them were written by him. Fun fact: the actor who played Charles Dickens, Simon Callow, rose to fame as a major character in the British comedy film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, which made a big star out of Hugh Grant back in 1994. Callow has written biographies on actor Charles Laughton and actor/writer/director Orson Welles, as well as an acclaimed biography of….. Charles Dickens, back in 2012 - 7 years after playing the great writer in The Unquiet Dead, so it’s fair to say that as a ‘fan,’ Callow knew the writer’s history and life well, and that put him in a unique position to know how to play him in this story, in a true and faithful way.
@@ChachiSays you’re welcome. It’s great how you’ve embraced the world of Doctor Who so quickly, and the fact that you’re loving the journey so far. You have some more great episodes this season to watch, as well as in future seasons that will continue to delight you and make you laugh (and maybe make you tearful as well) - such is the power of the story telling of Doctor Who. Can’t wait to continue this journey with you!
Simon carlow (the dickens actor) is a fan and scholer of dickins and play as him in theatres whilst reading from his works...... ps, dickins's great great great great grandson is the baddie in an episode of this show in s3 (and also a baddie in game of thrones) .. we'll point him out when u get to the episode....
As you asked, the meaning of the Big Bad Wolf will be revealed in the final episode of this season/series. (No spoilers). As far as The Flux is concerned, that doesn't happen for a VERY LONG time, not until season/series 13. (You're currently on series 1.)
I feel the current era (not aired yet of course) isn't getting the memo of what made the show work twenty years ago ....series 1 beautifully and genius showcased what it's all about from the off this is brilliant .... Loving reliving it all again :-) 🫶

Fun fact: the actor playing Charles Dickens is one of the foremost scholars on the man and was THRILLED to be asked to play him!

in the american comic tradition, i think the equivalent punchline is "cleveland." 😆
Cardiff is actually a nice seaside city irl
It is also the primary filming location for Doctor Who

Agree, her Big Bad Wolf monologue was a masterclass in subtlety.
i totally forgot about this episode and and soon as i saw her in this reaction i shouted GWEN 🤣

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales in the UK, where most of Doctor Who is filmed
Loving your watch through BTW! 😍 And glad you're enjoying it all!
Thanks so much!
Yes, they had some chemistry. Totally shippable. Come over to the Dark Side, Chachi.
Great reactions so far! 😊

The theatre scenes were filmed at the New Theatre in Cardiff..... but other scenes were filmed in Swansea - a city further along the coast of Wales.
14:54 You cahnt! There must be anotha way! 🪄
Can't wait for your next reaction! When's it gonna be?
Christopher Eccleston was on stage last year or the year before playing Scrooge, by the way. I love the Christopher Eccleston appreciation.
Oh that’s fun! I would have loved to see that.
@@ChachiSays So would I! Although I did see a different version in December, which was also good.
im so exited to see you discover all this as most of us did many years ago, that is what doctor who does well, story telling and character development
There was a clue right at the start that the Gelf were evil when the possessed grandmother killed her grandson.
This is true. Why did no (including myself) question this? 😅
Possibly they wrote it off as just, these inhabited zombies are disorientated and lash out without really having any idea what’s going on…

The Tardis is potentially of infinite size as it creates its own interior spacce ... and don't forget the big bad wolf.
Great, underrated episode.....
Did you stop reacting? I really enjoyed your reactions :c
