I love this scene, because of how pissed Haseo gets at Atoli. MAN she's annoying sometimes. Her philosophy makes sense, though.
Atolis English voice is so bad, Haseos is good though. I prefer the JP scene of this, but I don't have a choice.
I’ll admit Haseo has a point but considering how Atoli life is in the real world you can understand why she join the game to escape reality
She gets low grade at school, She gets verbal abuse by parents, Victim of lots bullying
It was so bad she went on lots of suicide websites
Now remember she only plays because it distracts her from wanting to die, because she found nothing to enjoy in the real world. And he basically just told her the one thing that keeps her from killing herself is pointless and fake. That little outburst had a decent chance of being just what drives her to it.
but she was also going a speel and being self rightest about teh pvp and say that was bad and you should feel bad haseo prob should bend more tactful but her doing that with shino being in a hosbital and teh only lead on her getting better was him doing the exact thing atoli said it was bad and should stop doing
When people lack true communication, it brings only pain to both sides. Atoli trying too hard to be liked and Haseo dwelling too much on his own issues, clashing in the worst way.
Its interesting to rewatch this and see Atoli's perspective of 'The World':a peaceful escape from her harsh life irl, clash with Haseo's (at the time) perspective of 'The World': the only place he can actually try to save his comatose friend/crush and has interest in *nothing else in the game.*

it really hurts when I hear those lines coming from Haseo but he has a point same goes with Atoli, her philosophy is also an nice reminder when we get way over our heads.

Well..I'm answering a 4-year old comment but here we go..In words of another comment i saw here "It was the first time Haseo ever opened his heart to anyone,but just because he opened his heart,doesn't mean nice,rainbow-colored soft things will come out of it",was he an idiot? Yes he was,but he had his reasons

Yes, but you've also got to consider that Atoli was completely ignorant of all of what Haseo had been through and she had no idea that her character model was such a torment to him. I'm personally neutral on this argument since it's governed purely by misunderstanding on both sides. Atoli is innocently ignorant of what her words mean to the despairing and desperate Haseo and Haseo is far too deep into his own obsessive drive to save Shino that he can't understand this.

The best jrpg story i ever experienced on ps2 lol. No game i played during that time came close.
Rouge Galaxy, SMT Digital devil saga, Raidou Kusunoa VS and persona 3 and 4 come in second place to this entire trilogy
Haseo taking shit too seriously, he reminds me of those kids that would scream racial slurs against you on Xbox for screwing up in the game lol
His crush is in a coma thanks to the game and she uses the same avatar, he finds it insulting as she's telling him to stop when in his mind he has no time to slow down, and this is also part of character progression, making it feel more real when he gains more positive relations.

Shino got PKed and put in a coma, Haseo's desperately seeking to bring her back, then comes along Atoli, (whose avatar is similar to Shino's) saying those things.. Haseo had every right to snap.. :)
I've honestly been in this position. I always play healer, and in a game the very first time I tried to do PVP, everyone screamed and demonized me for not being perfect and what they expected my first time trying. It's amazing the abuse they'll scream at a healer doing their because because they being a pure fighter "can do better" and "they're just an inept lazy person" looking for a free ride.

That’s not really what happened here. This was a tragic case of neither of them knowing what kind of shit the other was dealing with IRL. Atoll was going through suicidal depression among other issues, while Haseo was in his own world of shit. This blowup was the result of a long, humiliating series of events capped by Atoli inadvertently insulting his motivations after basically the date from hell. The bite sized version is that he’s trying to save his crush from a murderous Virus, and Atoli slags him off as just some bloodthirsty Player Killer (Haseo detests Player Killers btw).

@TsunadeFTisland11 - The director's point actually, to give Haseo and Atoli realistic conflict of personality. Atoli is a based on an average young female gamer of a "softcore" attitude, and Haseo is her polar male opposite. The director is effin genius.
Ahhhhh, I miss the days when I had as much testosterone as Haseo did in this scene
@xoa I play MMOs because of the original .hack Project. I decided to level up a lot and try to help people. I was really young, though, so it was okay to devote most of my time to silly things like that. I remember my first time being PK'ed. I was helping this guy in the Wilderness on Runescape get out. I was a Lv 102 at the time, but it wasn't enough. We were killed by three Lv 92-98, or somewhere around there. I was outraged, and decided to become a PKK on my own.

@Tinhh : Well I mean...people make games to play them and level, not to enjoy the scenery. Plus it'd annoy the HELL out of me too if someone went on and on about how the game is beautiful- I wouldn't mind hearing it once or twice- but it's like- "DAMN, I get it already!"

spyro115 Neither make a valid point, and both are wrong for the same reason. They think their play style is the only valid one.
Atoli is wrong because a person can't be forced to enjoy something like The World. It physically can't be done. The more you try to force them, the more they will hate it out of spite. It's the exact reason I don't force people to watch My Little Pony. It's not even a case of "it's your loss". It's nobody's loss. Forcing an idea, regardless of the idea, even if the idea would have helped the world significantly, is always a poor decision. It never ends well. WWII and the rise of the USSR are pretty much the embodiment of this. People claiming to fix things by breaking something completely unrelated to the problem.
Haseo is wrong for a simpler reason. He depends on an arbitrary number to tell him whether something is desirable. Those numbers for the levels, the stats for wins and losses. Those are even more meaningless than the graphics. You can have a game without levels and competitions. Second Life, MOO, D&D, any form of LARP, none of those are about winning. SL is social, MOO is pretty much the same, D&D is having a story to tell (High stats are a form of losing, actually, because a statistically-strong Player can't develop in the story.), and LARP isn't actually a form of reenactment, but a game that's acted out physically, with no win/lose condition. Even Minecraft counts. The Enderdragon needs a mod to be killed more than once, but you can keep playing after killing it, meaning there is more to do. Those numbers are meaningless. They exist only to tell you, but not show you, that something has a meaning. Even a higher level means nothing if the person is too stupid to play. The stats are decorations. Without people to look at them and figure out the meaning, they have none.

I'm on Haseo's side. Half a year of trying to get Shino back, he loses everything he gains in just a moment of time from data drain, and then Atoli says to slow down and enjoy the game that took someone close to him with the same face as not just Shino's character but the actual Shina as well (Shino's character is based on her in the real world, check the mangas). In all truth I would have snapped as badly as Haseo after all the grief, stress, and despair he's had to go through
They both had their reasons. Both involve a life-or-death struggle.

That's true, but I know a some people who play online games for the same reasons she does. MMOs are so expansive and have different ways of playing, thats what makes them interesting.
Well, if you've ever lost in competitive events, it's easy to see how she feels about fighting other players.
She's very emotional, so imagine training all your life to win the olympics then get stomped on by another person so easily. You'd be crushed. .
She just doesn't want to make anyone else to feel bad.

To be fair I'm on Haseo's side. Shino's in a coma and even though Haseo knows Shino loves Ovan he doesn't give up on trying to get her back. Sure, Atoli didn't know, but at the same time it was like Atoli telling Haseo to give up on Shino. He know he had to move forward, get stronger, and find "Tri-Edge" and the part that makes it worse is that seeing Atoli is a constant reminder of what happened to Shino. Sorry, but there was so much negativity to Haseo that I had to speak up here, you know?
@xoa This was back in 2003 or 2004, so .hack//G.U. really had a heavy emotional impact on me. Or, at least, I was able to enjoy the games more to the fullest!

Dang I forgot how much of a jerk Haseo was back then! Though it makes the positive character development that much more satisfying :)
An interesting contrast to SAO in some respects; the conclusion that Kirito & Asuna came to was that virtual experiences were worth having in their own right. Even if they're some of the best players in the game, once they decide to stop and smell the flowers, they end getting closer to one another. I think Atoli from G.U. would find that really sweet actually!

Because he was trying to be nice to her so she would fight with him in the Arena, she's a healer and they're useful/rare.
Coming back to relive my childhood! I use to binge watch these .hack//g.u. cutscenes alot when I was in high school.
poor Chigusa. I know Haseo is being a jerk, coz all he can think is about revenge and kill Tri-Edge just to save Shino from her coma. Pretty much in vol 1 he doesn't care about anyone, so he uses as many people as he can, just so he could save his so-called-gf Shino

What I'm asking now is -When people make an RPG, do the people who make it first think - "Do I want sick skills and the best weapons for every class and have a bunch of action/fighting and great attacks and equips?" or Do they first think- "Man, I want people to ignore the game and STARE at all the stuff on the ground and in the air?" @melmiamisfit Yeah, Healers are often find themselves being a target for people's blame on various occasions though they are a life-saver and the main reason why their friends could survive. Such a shame but when some valuable things are easy to find.... it became less and less valuable and eventually became just a regular matter...

Im on Haseo's side. God Atoli sounds too much like Kirito. I exactly reacted like Haseo while watching SAO.
But then when you learned more about Atoli, she and Haseo are like the most relatable anime characters of all time. When you grow up, you REALLY appreciated how G.U. stood for: Grow Up.
If a new .hack game comes. I want a likeable protag just like Haseo was.

I'm not too sure what the title of the track is, but I'm pretty sure it's the opening from the first game. The title translation I got for the Japanese title 夜明けの飛翔 was 'Flight at Daybreak'.

@Tinhh : I mean- not saying I don't stop and think 'Damn, I wish i was in this game- the scenery is so cool!' but i mean, just admiring it all the time gets annoying too. So let's stop...ARGUING and enjoy .Hack. It'd be better if hack had better places to be at though, like an actual beach. Like the one in Kingdom Hearts or Twilight Town in KH. I stop a bit sometimes, or before i leave the island to absorb it all and think. Got any places you like in games/RPGS or...? (END)

Atoli is quite sweet, you just have to cut the volume if the voice is too irritating. Haseo is so narrow-minded, thank gosh he grows up. Sure, the girl who you have an obsessive crush on over the internet is in a coma. That doesn't mean you get to yell @ a girl with a different viewpoint than you, because she has the same avatar as other person.
to be fair if someoen who has teh same face has a close friend the actual person (shino actully looks like that)that is a como to tell you your entire way of doing things is wrong dispite it the only hope you have to help that person like image your best friend is in teh hosbital and you have a way to save them but some random has person with there face just comes in say stop doing it its wrong you be rightfully piss off. dont get me wrong haseo was wrong for going that far but atoli is not innocent in this ether

If The World was a real game, I'd agree with both of them. Pretty much any game would be great to just wander around in and meet people, but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna get stronger and fight people. But right now, I'm more on Haseo's side.
Once they make a real game of The World, I'm buying it immediately, am I right?
It would have been funny if the pillar broke and fell on Haseo after he slashed it...but that would be mean. But funny.
