Engines of Amtrak - EMD F69PHAC
Vložit
- čas přidán 5. 01. 2021
- The F69PHAC is yet another experimental locomotive for Amtrak. It was America's first AC traction diesel locomotive and would be a big stepping stone for future locomotive development. While not incredibly well documented compared to other locomotives in this series, there's still a bit to learn about regarding the F69, especially its experience running with the German ICE train-set!
Sorry that this episode was a bit short, there wasn't really a ton of information available and pictures/videos I could use without copyright issues were few and far between. Either way, I hope you still enjoyed!
Special thanks to those who provided pictures and video clips!

Very interesting video! One cool and little known bit of history is that prior to the construction of the F69's, Amtrak/Siemens rebuilt F40 number 202 with AC traction following a derailment in 1984. It's currently at TTCI. Looking forward to the new Acela Express episode!
F69phac 1989-present day?
Hi
@@lauraherrera2539 yea its still around
Also present day means today.
it was BBC not Siemens
So THIS is the first time Amtrak had talks with Simens
Yep.
Siemens*
@@SomeRamdomAhole oh
There will be ACS-64 and SC-44 coming soon!
@@YaoboyProd2K15 wdym acs64 coming soon, the SC 44 and ACS 64 has been running for a few years now
1:08 i see that person saying "nice" in the top right you sneaky F40.
I think that's yuri from ddlc
Can we just appreciate how "funny" the thumbnail is, it's just too perfect...
I've always wanted to learn more about the F69
You know what they say
You said 69 nice
Haha. Funny number
Never heard of it
The NICEst locomotive of them all.
Can't wait for the Acela episode
I had never heard of an F69, but once I saw the Metra unit, I knew what it resembled. Thanks for the info.
1:08 There's an anime girl saying nice at the top right hand corner.
It's a watermark, don't be salty.
Never noticed that

NICE
These will always be my favourite Amtrak locomotives. IT JUST LOOKS SO COOL!
NRE still have one of the F69's in their yard. but havent run since.
last one was seen in 2019
The last time I was this early... oh wait this is the earliest I have been
I always thought this engine was really cool-looking!
Yay! I wanted to know more about these engines! Thanks for reviewing this engine!
I really thought it would be another long one this one was short so it felt more like one of those CZcams short videos
Well, they have almost no history to cover.
5:16 yessssssssssssssssss. Can't wait to see it!!!!!
Watching this video at 3 am, it has been a really long day, bad day. Thank you for your great content. You rock
Great episode on this little known class! A bit short, but still great with other references to the time period (Super Mario World for 1991). Not a fan of the horns, but at least they're not as bad as the Avelia Liberty's original horn.
yes, finally i was waiting to see or hear if you were gonna remake the Acela express video
I loved this as always! Keep up the great work!
I Loved The Amtrak EMD F69PHAC Locomotive
I really like all amtrak trains, so I loved this and exited for the acela
Yay another one
me when I see amtrakguy365 upload an engines of amtrak video: 6 9
im so confused as well as scared as what this implies

@Wesley Maxfield hehe surprised are you? I like the best of both worlds :D
Nice
The nicest diesel locomotive of all time.
What an interesting Locomotive! Love your videos!!
I hope these engines get more recognition as Amtrak buys more Siemens products. The AC drive technology improved a lot in the 25 years between the F69PHAC and SC-44, but it's still the same basic drive system, and more importantly, it got Siemens' foot in the door of the North American locomotive business.
Thanks for doing a video on this oddball of an engine. I'm slowly working on building an F69 in O scale for my Amtrak fleet.
@NorCal Railfan Productions shoot! I've been spotted!!!
Tactical retreat! HIDE HIDE HIDE!!!
Hooray!
Ive never seen this train! So thats cool
Entertaining video. Keep it up
look up NREX 451 on google you'll find a couple of photos.
Omg this took a while but this is exciting
there is one word for this engine, nice
Siemens still has proprietary software and circuitry in them. NRE scrapped them, along with SD80’s and SD70MACS from NS at Siemen’s request starting in mid-2019.
Thank you for this video. I mistakenly for years thought it was a Metra F 40 PH slanted model. But more like a prototype later on for the Metra version. Short lived unfortunately, not one scale model has ever been produced with the F 59 Amtrak or the slanted version on Metra commuter lines. Would love to see them. Your video is very informative, I didn't notice it being short at all. Very quick and educational towards these prototype models. 👏👏👏👍👍🙂 .

Nice video!
OH BOY A NEW VIDEO!!!!!
Nice video! I subbed to your channel
Finally it's here
Pleaseeeeeee do a video on the ICE visit. It’s so hard to find good footage of that and I’d love to see more and hear you discuss it.
Nice
There's a little bit of a running gag that tends to show up in German forums with "what would the US look like if Germany won WW2", and then you get the "Amtrak ICE" photos.
Everyone: This was the 1st time Seimmens and Amtrak chatted, this engine looks sharp, etc.
Me: F *69* PHAC
Man Amtrak in the 90s was like “Everything Must Be Streamlined!”
1:08 noice
looking forward to the x2000 video. the x2k is my favorite trainset in the world.
Surprisingly The Only Two EMD f69phac still exist in the scrapyard in Illinois.
I searched up in Google and it said that the two units still exist in a scrap yard over in Mount Vernon, Illinois like you said.
Wow i never new this existed
Thats for the information :-)
This was very nice mate!
My original California personalized license plates for my 1976 GMC Motorhome are "GMC F69" and I was going to number the unit "455" for the Oldsmobile 455 V8 engine in the motorhome, even though that number was never used for the F69PHAC. Over time I have decided to paint the GMC as SDP40F #644. It will parked outside the new 'Hi-Level Diner' restaurant north of the Cajon Pass in a few years. The restaurant will be an Amtrak Superliner Diner from the 1981-1983 production build. Stay tuned and check out GoFundMe!
Nice video! Since there isn't that much info about them aside from being retired, sold to NRE in Mt Vernon, IL and stripped of numerous parts, its pretty much safe to assume that these two unique locomotives have been cut apart for scrap.
The last time i was this early GG1s were still in Amtrak's roster
So never
@@tomnook2612 yes i am never early
So 1977
1:08 *nice*
Hi
Hopefully these are saved and not scrapped. I'd like to see them donated to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis or IRM at some point, even better if smaller museums like the Frisco RR Museum here in Dallas were able to acquire them.
Yay even more from AmtrakGuy365 :D
One of these is still at NRE, in Mt. Vernon. If you look up NRE on google maps, you can see it on the North side of the buildings.
More EoA? Sign me up. Anyways, maybe sometime we'll find out what condition the F69PHACs are in. Worthy of preservation, in my opinion.
i remember when the wikipidea article was changed to just say "nice" for everything
I’ve just discovered #451 is for sale on the NRE’s website.
The end for these locomotives story is sad.
This Video was Cool Amtrakguy365
nice video
At least one of these is still sitting at Mount Vernon. My friend found one there and sent me a photo.
This is awesome and im early!
Great video. Always good content coming out. I personally don’t like full with body designs on locomotives and prefer the narrow body with railing on all sides of the locomotives.
Southern actually had a locomotive called the GP38AC and it might have some mixed reviews
261 units were built in 70/71. Norfolk Southern and many other roads changed them into 38-2s later on. FURX acquired many of the units from NS. There is also the SD38AC with only 15 produced. SRY Rail Link still operates 4 of them.
Will you eventually do an episode on the GG1s?
Yes finally
I would’ve loved a model of this engine
The remade episodes are fantastic, if you do another GE Genesis episode I have good footage of VIA ones you can use
I'm surprised that even though these locomotives were successful in operation, they didn't last long on Amtrak.
Just didn’t make much sense to keep them around, with there only being 2 of them, and having major mechanical differences from the rest of the fleet
The Siemens Traction Inverters were problematic, and they were buying P42s when they were retired.
Nice.
nicePHAC
I was gonna say that I was disappointed that you didn’t make a “69” joke, but then I re-watched. Great video as always
Amtrak ICE doesn't exist, it can't hurt you.
Amtrak ICE:
This looks a lot like the Golden Rock WDP3A locomotives. Although the technology powering that one is ALCO, not EMD.
Yes
F69PHACs last word: nice
F40PH: *TRIGGERED*
F69PACH: U MAD BRO?
Me waiting for this video: its been 84 years
No no 69 years
Great video as always. One minor thing, the first song playing in the background was a little distracting. The older ones where you used bluegrass music seemed more fitting.
The airhorns sound good
I hope the F69 is preserved oneday
Great video
Sad to know they were scrapped
Their status is unknown, but are presumed to still exist

Ive seen pictures of these things in Jack London in Oakland here in the bay area
451's horn was a lot sweeter, albeit I couldn't find any footage for it.
F69; nice!
1:08 I saw that.

"It was America's first AC traction diesel locomotive"
not really
in 1984 BBC/ABB had tested the three-phase traction with the M640 #CP4744 then in 1987 with the F40AC #F202.
both of them were equipped with thyristor voltage source inverters which controlled all the motors in parallel.
During 1987 also siemens equipped the EMD268 with 6 thyristor current source inverters each driving a single motor.
Didn't know about these projects! Also, there were even earlier AC locomotives, the GP38AC and SD38AC built 1970/71. As far as I know almost all 261 GP38ACs were changed to 38-2s. 15 SD38ACs were built and some still run with their AC alternator. SRY Rail Link still operates all 4 of the BC Hydro SD38s, with one being a SD38AC.
MLW: “Am I a joke to you?”
All i have to say is *N I C E*
F69.............Nice👌
Wooooo!
Can you make 2 videos on the bombardier lrc train used for via rail and amtrak, just like the on engines of via rail and also the amtrak u.a.c turbo train please after the Acela express
You should do a video about the history of high speed trains on the NEC
