The purpose of pop music is get the song over with as quickly as possible so that the radio station can get to the advertising for the auto sales lot that’s running great deals second hand worn out vehicles that would cost far more to repair than simply purchasing a new one! It’s not just that all new music is in 4/4 but also no one attempts to add any swing to the groove. Early Hip Hop had grooves with swing because they were sampling old 70s grooves. New hip hop tries to add variation by adding weird combinations of high hat trills in every conceivable combination, but it still all sounds the same and flat because there is no swing.

    David Xaviel. The reason music sucks is...by design, all music is supposed to come from England and the English stopped caring. True story. Bob Dylan stated in a magazine interview in 2015, the 'city fathers' didn't like rock n roll so they busted it up with payola scandals. Afterwards, all music was either English beat pop or rhythmic music. Eventually, Americans caught on that, if you want to make rock music in this country - it's extremely difficult. The West Coast scenes in the 60s were mostly underground scenes, not played on the radio. They were motivated by anti-Vietnam sentiment, political movements, culture, but also the experimental nature of music because it was still new, in terms of recorded music (if it was not new, they had no way of knowing). Now you know, a lot of it - is not new. CCR was a big exception to that, often don't get enough credit for reviving rock music when there were people who thought rock n roll was dead in the late 60s. In the 80s, it was mostly the glam metal scene in West Hollywood, then the grunge scene in Seattle in the 90s. It takes a lot of dedicated musicians who want to live the lifestyle, not just cash in with a few hits from the garage on an internet platform. So, part of this problem was, the lack of record stores, like Tower Records, where people went to talk about music as a subculture or community. It became an exercise in derangement of writing lyrics and then trying to find a sound to fit the lyrics as well as a singer. And the reality that, the words you're writing aren't really new. On top of this, the record labels, for the most part, abandoned the idea of investing money in album-oriented bands and musicians. They wanted garden variety pop music and singles. The cost of recording music was too high, mainly because of the shift towards downloadable music and streaming. At this point, you can simply make music with A.I. - and I'm inclined to think that, record labels won't care if they can pump out singles with A.I. that are adequate for commercials and jingles. Eventually, those songs might catch on with unsuspecting people who don't know the song is A.I.

    The only thing more annoying that new music is knowing you don't have the skills to create songs as good as new music. Yes, it's more simplistic and some of it gets boring after awhile, but it's all relative. Complexity doesn't automatically mean good. I've got shelves of old records that attest to that. Whatever speaks to you is good even if it's a one chord song. If you don't like today's music then go make some so what you like is out there. Now I'm jonesing to find a really sarcastic song with as few pitch variations as possible.

    How about:
    1) No harmonies
    2) Vapid non-thought-provoking lyrics
    3) Ambiguous, transitory background musicians not involved in the songwriting, not to mention real drummers replaced by drum machines droning out the same, simplistic beat
    4) Lack of vocal skills masked by auto-tune, pitch correction and computer effects
    5) Rampant plagiarism and laziness in the form of "sampling" and downright musical fraud

  • @janhommer
    @janhommer Před měsícem +1

    That's funny because those are not the reasons why today's music sucks. It most certainly sucks, but not for those reasons, so, yeah, you're right 😂 (OK, seriously, though: I mean, I'd like to point out that there might be a reason why many younger (!) people, too discover music from the 60s etc. and actually agree (!) it's better than today's and that I've been listening to the Beatles as an older Millennial in my teen years while my classsmates listened to Britney Spears etc. and, honestly, is there anything more inappropriate than mocking younger people (I mean, as if mocking old people wasn't already bad enough, but this is, well, very revealing, actually' 😄) for that sort of thing rather than taking it as evidence that those who say it might have a point?) But, no, one shouldn't generalize, of course and, and, being a singer-songwriter myself, I'd actually be pretty insane to act like there coouldn't possibly any good music anymore; I think Taylor Swift is being disgustingly overhyped,but I love Lana Del Rey, for example, so, no, no resentments against contemporary (nor against female for that matter, don't anyone even...!) artists per se (Just saying those who truly stand out seem to have become fewer, but that, too, could change again, see what happened in the early 90s...)
