For sure. They seem to be coming back (Robocop Rouge City is a good example) but I miss how healthy the "AA" market of games were. That mid place between indie but not big enough budget to be "AAA". And happy Halloween to you as well. Can't wait to play Robocop this Halloween (been a robocop fanboy since I was a kid, so I'm super excited).

Fun fact: The roly-poly boss is based on a real-life insect, the larvae of the caddis-fly. They will take whatever is in their environment and glue it together to make a shell. People keep them as pets and leave gold flecks and other things so the caddis flies make custom pretty shells.

Hubert Duprat is a French artist that gives caddis fly larvae gold and pearls and precious stones n stuff. Then they make fancy butt-hats for themselves. They're quite sweet in a gross bug way.

I remember seeing the review of this game on X-Play and thinking it looked fascinating, but I was also like 13 and my parents were pretty strict about me playing M rated games.
Glad to see it was as weird and cool as my child brain thought it would be. I always remember it exists but never enough to actually track it down and give it a shot.

Strictness with M rated games sticks with me. I tried out Mass Effect, but got stopped shortly after leaving the Citadel because my parents didn’t like the gunfire.
What’s funny is that this was the one case that was a problem: Mass Effect was out, but Persona 4 and Halo were fine around the same time. Well, Halo had some caveats (I spent all my time making Forge maps with no one to play on them, no multiplayer), but they were dumb reasons to make an exception.
I loved this game as a kid, lot of memories. A few things worth note, like how the one assault rifle had a grenade launcher, most guns had a secondary fire in it. For example, shotgun hosts would be able to do a double barrel fire, like Half-Life. The multiplayer was fun and had bot support. It would have been funny to have civvie show it and the secret locations to play special characters on certain maps. One map had Richardson naked except for her towel, and she had a towel as a weapon that she would whip rat-tail style as a one hit, another map had the chef who would throw the plates like saucers. Speaking of the chef, on the level where you use him to poison the guards, you can actually cook the soup without the rat poison. The cutscene plays out the same, so chef (Raimi) will still do his serial killer laugh and then stop to try and hide even though he only cooked soup. The guards will comment on how it tastes bland. Since the game has to move on, when you re-enter the area they will be lined up for seconds.
That chef comment Is actually really funny and I really like that they added that in

I don't know why, and I don't know how, but somehow "the audience loves the pestilent rodent!" hooked me in my soul and got me laughing in a genuinely worrisome manner. 10/10 when can we expect a Cancer Mouse plushy?

As an owner of a GameCube I can say with 100% certainty that this game looks great with the weird voodoo violence you had to evoke to get this running on a PC. Thank you, Civvie!
Is it that hard to get running? In my experience with Dolphin games pretty much just work. Of course there are exceptions and I haven't tried to play this game (or heard of it)
@@sean8102 Last time I tried (and is still listed on the Dolphin Wiki page for this game as a known problem), Geist had issues with random graphical opcode errors that would bring up an in-emulator error dialogue and crash the game. They didn't seem so consistent that the game would be unplayable start-to-finish, but certainly makes it more of a pain to play.
Though, there's a report on that aforementioned wiki page that mentions they encountered no errors at all, and it doesn't _seem_ like Civvie did in the process of recording this. Perhaps it depends on your computer setup, or there's some magic combination of settings that gets Geist to be stable, or the Dolphin team just fixed shit unknowingly in the time since I tried playing it.
And for my personal experience, when I tried playing this Dolphin had an issue at the time where _any_ error that would bring up a pop-up dialogue would crash the emulator entirely if you were in fullscreen, so that could've been my issue; it only says that it "eventually" causes a crash if you keep playing.
Dolphin + Supershaders, my friend.
It's not hard to get it running. Also, there's a mouse injector so you can play it with mouse and keyboard flawlessly.
I've been considering emulation to get around some of the difficulties that come with aging original hardware and the increasing scarcity of games. Maybe I just have bad luck or my computer isn't up to snuff, but I have worse times with GameCube emulators than just about any other kind of virtual console. Also, I end up going back to the console because a GameCube is just about the easiest piece of machinery there is to do home repairs and maintenance.
Everyone's got their favorite middle market obscure game, and this one is mine! Didn't ever expect to see Civvie cover it but I'm glad he did and more glad he liked it!
19:59 I have to say, there is some GORGEOUS character animation and direction in this game. Especially for the time, but it actually holds up decently well today.

Crash Bandicoot doing that look back at the camera with the eyebrows is when he jumps on top of the critters (the boar in the first game, Polar in the second, the tiger and the dinosaur in the third) to ride them and he looks like he's about to fuck them.

This game is like somebody played a bunch of Wraith the Oblivion, got really pissed off that Orpheus ruined its ending in 2004, and then decided to make a Sci-Fi homage to the setting. I love it.

I always felt that this game and Eternal Darkness were critically underrated and forgotten by Nintendo, so its very nice to see you cover this game, I love it a lot!
Both are still stuck on GameCube. Although I think Eternal Darkness was sold digitally on the Wii before Nintendo shut down the online store.
Hoping both eventually get remastered like Metroid Prime and Paper Mario GC.

This and Second Sight were my childhood favorite's games it pains me that games like this arent made more often, where shooting is secondary to the puzzles. Mind you I got really good at the shooting parts mostly because I played Judge Dredd on Game cube.

And before anyone tells me that I didn't play it; I did. I've beaten it a few times, love its shooting due to a mouse injector patch, so I play against bots in multiplayer semi-frequently.

Those CoD games were shockingly robust.
I think they made the Call of Duty and Resistance FPS games for the PS Vita. Neither were as good as Killzone Mercenary.

Man, Civvie, and Mandalore both introduced me to a sub-genre I didn't even know existed until now; Poltergeist.
An untapped genre.
First game I can think of that did something like it was the cult classic 'The Haunting (Starring Poulterguy) on the Genesis from EA.'
There was also a somewhat similar game reviewed by Accursed Farms (Ross Scott, of the Freeman's Mind fame), called "Messiah", though that was a christmas special.
@@Gatorade69 IDK when it came out but Avenging Spirit on the Game Boy has a mechanic where you can possess most enemies, and your energy drains quickly when you're outside a body. It's a pretty fun game.

Civvie you just brought back so many memories of playing this with my dad as a kid. I actually still have that old GameCube and even have the old disc alongside a few other games , maybe i'll plug it back in and go down memory lane a bit.
I played this game as a kid and for the longest time I thought I hallucinated it because nobody talked about it or ever mentioned it. I'm glad I somehow came back to the timeline where this game exist.
The Gamecube's library has always kind of felt like the output of a really obscure band that, for the most part, is entirely justified in being forgotten by the public but that did put out one absolute banger of an album where every single track did groundbreaking things you can still find traces of in the genre to this day.

Even though I owned a PS2 at the time I really do have a lot of respect for the GameCube. Some of the games on the system still look pretty good thanks to it being more powerful than the PS2. Really Nintendo being Nintendo and not including a DVD drive probably hurt the console as that was a big selling point of the PS2.

Okay I dont know if anyone will read this, but all the voice acting for this game was done by a group of radio station hosts from Orlando Florida specifically Real Radio 104.1, which was in the same office building where the developers of this game were also working out of. The guy who tells you the mission briefing at the beginning is voiced by Carlos Nevaro. He recently has been in The Walking Dead and Hawkeye. I know him personally and its wild to me that a bunch of my families friends are in this cult gamecube game just because they didnt wanna pay real voice actors.

I feel like I played this on an actual gamecube back in my wilder years, but I couldn't figure out what the crap to do to spook the chef. Kept rattling him, but not quite 'scaring'. Guess plates just flying _near_ you aren't "scary"... I mean, who can really feel fear without pieces of jagged ceramic sticking out of your face? And then be mysteriously okay to serve poisoned stew to soldiers right after.
Logic aside, I remember it being a cool game. Thanks for lettin' us all see the rest, Civvie! =D

I love this game. It's Resident Evil in first person. The same kind of puzzles and slow methodical progression, with a horror aesthetic.
I remember playing Geist way back when. Was a lot of fun, though I don't recall if I ever finished it. Either way, great video as always Civvie!

Before I clicked the video I swear I asked myself if I was going to see more of the mouse. I got a game I completely forgot about AND more mouse!! I really love the side characters and lore. I'd watch a daily sitcom of your weird characters.
