It's not about finding a calling or what the child would enjoy doing in life. It's about the responsibility of earning and taking care of the family. Money, prestige and power are considered the main factors required to secure stability and prosperity for the family.

    As a Chinese Malaysian, we give/receive money when attending wedding, birthday, funeral, house warming, business opening, Chinese New Year, even after death (someone will burn the money for us)
    By the way, other than Gong Xi Fa Cai, we have dozens of greetings to say during Chinese New Year, which are all related to money 🤣

      LOL jokes aside Money is everything as well as nothing. The deeper meaning to this culture of money is the experience of hardship, poverty and just to fill the stomach. While i also experience the same thing i got to experience first hand if you don't have money our family literally were only eating vegetables and salty fish for meals.
      Its more of a community getting together to gather enough money so that their son's can get married as well as a small sum of seed money to feed the family. Later on as the economy gets better and upward social mobility becomes much easier the Younger generation no longer experience Poverty and started to question as to why Money is so important.
      As for moving up the social ladder and becoming a Doctor well what is wrong with moving up the social ladder? But for those who grew up in poverty its the quickest way and ticket to provide a better life and future. But as we our Wages and quality of life goes higher younger generation not faced with the same living experience and condition wouldn't understand. They think when they are born life is so comfortable.
      But again Money isn't everything. However without it you cannot even donate to charity even if you want to. Look at the current condition today with the Pandemic out of control. My heart aches when i see many desperate people selling food on the streets trying to get by just to ensure their kids get fed.
      Its about how you choose to spend Money when you have it and its about survival when you don't.

We just don't feel like starting extra petty squabbles because we'd rather find better things to do with our time, lol. The fact is, his routine wouldn't sell if it didn't hit a good majority of our heartstrings.

    As one with chinese roots, I can confirm that.
    BUT most of the chinese gesture sayings must not be translated literally. It would as u can see just sound funny.
    Those "special cultural best wishes" can just be summed up as kindness and goodwill toward u.
    For Chinese and also for Japanese the symbolic meaning is very important.

    Asked a Chinese girl I was seeing if she had any religious affiliations and she thought for a moment (perhaps to translate in her head) and then said in all earnestness that her religion is money. I laughed in disbelief. She said, somewhat hurt, "don't laugh!" I could not understand it at the time. Money is energy, just that some people soil their energy to get it.

    • @aarondodo4076
      @aarondodo4076 Před 2 lety

      You can actually expand on that, it means more than what it sounds like. Money is just paper, it is currency, it requires both sides to acknowledge its value, and it means utterly nothing without a civilized society. Civilization is a word so often used yet seldom reflected upon, really it simply means working together instead of competing against. Instead of just robbing other people's food stock with force, you decide to trust others, each specialize in a field, and as a result collectively produce more than you would otherwise. You just focus on making melons and get real good at it, I'll focus on making peaches, then in the end both of us can get both melons and peaches in abundance. But there are many specifics that each of us would want and need, everybody need different things at different times, so we all agree to use money as an universal currency to trade for what each of us want. Money itself, already IS social credit. But the existence of this system is actually not always a guarantee, we are just too used to it that we often take it for granted. It actually requires a lot of faith, faith in the fact that other people also agree to this approach, that other people are willing to cooperate. Because sadly, if they are simply adhering to short-term maximum benefit principal, simply robbing you is always the more profitable method with least effort. They don't need to spend years and specialize in a craft, they don't need to pay effort, they just need to get big and strong and then rob you by force. To be able to say "alright I'm not going to rob you, in fact I'm going to rely on you, and I'm also happy that you rely on me, the measurement of this reliance is the money you are paying me or I'm paying you" requires faith in others, faith in the unknown (others are always unknown, especially others who specialize in what you don't know). It is always a gamble to trust others, and you know it, yet you take that leap of faith with each exchange of money. So from that regard, it does become a religion of sorts --- except one would argue that you see "miracles" from this religion actually manifest in front of you quite often, reaffirming to you that it indeed works. What she's actually saying, is that her religion is "civilization". That against all odds, and even if she doesn't have the full answer, even if often there's a XXXX ton of obstacles, she still have faith that people can rely on each other and get better lives. And like you said, as with all religions, sometimes people get reeled off the track if they don't stop and reflect a bit --- if you try to grab money in such a nasty way that destroys the foundation of a cooperative civilization, well now that money is worth nothing because no one is producing anything. This is also why despite the fact that merchants and business men make even more money, Chinese parents still feel much better about their children being doctors and engineers --- these are professionals with a craft, with something solid that they can offer to others. No matter where you go, a doctor can at least earn a meal by giving people a better chance at being alive. No matter where you go, an engineer can make things and design things that do solid work and provide solid outcome. At the end of the day it comes down to faith in other living people just like yourself.
