- From Season 1, Episode 1 'The Flying Nun' - Located atop a hill in old San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Convent San Tanco is populated by, among others, the stern and traditional Reverend Mother Superior Placido, straightforward Sister Jacqueline, English-challenged Sister Sixto who is always mixing her English slang around, young innocent novice Sister Ana, Sister Teresa and Sister Marguerita. The convent is an old, beautiful building but is showing its age and is need of major repairs - as is everything the sisters own - money for which the sisters do not have. Into their world enters Sister Bertrille, a new novice from New York, who is to teach kindergarten. Sister Bertrille is an ex-surfer girl hippie with tons of enthusiasm who will go to any means to achieve what she wants and what she thinks the convent needs. She quickly learns how to fly by raising and turning her head and the associated cornette. But those that do not see her fly are the men of the restricted military base into which she accidentally flies. It takes some convincing for them to believe she's not a spy. But the person who may need even more convincing is the Reverend Mother, who must decide what to do with her new flying novice.

Yes, it was a favorite! I went to Catholic school, so it might have been part of our homework to enjoy this show?! Lol
I needed a good dose of nostalgia today, and this fit the bill. Sister Bertrille was one of my first heroes.

I used to watch this when I was still 4 yrs. Old. I was humorously educated and saw the world positively. Thanks God and to all the tv shows on these 60, 70, 80 and 90's tv shows and sitcoms.😅😂❤😊🎉
I enjoy looking back at the cooky TV shows of the 60's. Some episodes were rarely aired but you can see them here on YT. I'm glad I found this one. It was fun to watch.

innocent times, at least on tv. i turned 9 in 1967 and though i don't remember much of this show i did watch it back then on our family black and white tv with only ONE channel serving the whole country ( NZ)
i did notice the homage to the sound of music in the opening with her and the children.

What a sweet delightful and innocent show. I thank the Lord that, after almost 60 years, my heart has not hardened to the gentleness of this classic. The 60s had its problem but we still retained decency in our public broadcasts and Christian values were upheld. God bless.
In 1971 when I was 10, we were up at our cabin in Lake Arrowhead, CA. We were at a little beach area in the village and Sally Field walked right by my friend and I. I had no idea what her name was so I yelled out “Sister Bertrille!!” She was so sweet and turned around a waved to us. We were soooo excited to see the “Flying Nun!” 😊
Reminds me of the sound of music, Maria and the children.

Most people don't know that The Sound of Music was a true story. The Flying Nun had no truth, just charm.

Sally Fields played great part on Flying Nun. I'd forgotten till now that she continued on to be a very talented serious and dramatic actress. Just goes to show... "you gotta start somewhere". She continued on to be very skilled and versitle in her field. 🎬 🌷

I did too our nuns had the black habits I caused a lot of trouble but those nuns were merciful to me They were Jesus nuns I appreciate the time I went to St Cyril’s in Tucson Arizona At least they set a Christian foundation.
The fifth episode of the first season is the mist touching of the entire series. Sister Bertril gets transferred to The Holy City but suddenly there is an overwhelming demonstration of support for her staying

When I was growing up, I remember people making fun of this series. Rewatching it now, I find it wholesome and charming. And Sally Field despite her family's prediction became a great actress.

Vintage TV was and still is the best. This show was kinda corning but magic and something I wish wud come back. OMG - Sally Fields (with an S) was at her best.

It makes me sad to watch anything with Sally cause she has always reminded me so much of my mom who passed 3 urs ago and she always talked about these movies but I had never wzt he'd any of them til now and I'm so glad I did 😊😊

While the show was a bit corny,at the time (I think I was maybe 8 yrs old?),I don't know why or how to explain,but I knew Sally Field has "something". Now I realize,her talent was just starting to show & I for one,am glad she did this series. At least it's a lot better that the junk produced later. Hats off to an amazingly 👏 talented individual,no matter what role she inhabits.

The first time that Sally Field was lifted into the air ... there was another novice nun who looked the same size, but she didn't fly.
I wondered ... Sally Field taught kindergarten ... so, there had to be children who weighed less ... wouldn't the children want to fly too ? ? ? All that the children needed to do was to get that nun hat thing and put it on ... and then fly ! ! !
It just didn't make sense that Sally Field could fly only because she was 90 pounds and wore that nun hat ... that would mean that anyone who was lightweight and put that hat on, or any type of hat like that, could also fly......they should have written the show so that there was another reason that she could fly, something that no one else could do.
She'll always be Gidget to me.

One thing this show did not need was canned laughter.
It would have worked better without a track.
Lots of real laughs, but also lots of pathos.
Perhaps if I would have seen the PILOT expsode...what - EV - hur...
I think Amanda Bynes would have been perfect to play sister betrill after she did she's the man, would've made a perfect remake!!!😊😊😊😊

I loved this show when I was a child. It was one of my favorites. I love seeing the clothing styles and cars of the '60's, but it really was a dumb show.

Was this meant to radicalise nuns?
Nah. Priests and nuns often participated in demonstrations and protests during the late 60s and early 70s. Check out the Berrigan brothers for a couple of prime examples. I imagine Bernard Slade, the creator of the series and writer of this episode, figured a nun involved in the Free Speech Movement was less divisive than one who was protesting the war in Vietnam.
The Catholic Church actually liked this. They felt that it humanized nuns.
"The Trouble with Angels" was also a big favorite! Fun movie! 📽️🍿📽️
