- Portishead Marina back in 1987. The footage shows the whole marina area and the buildings that used to occupy the land. All these have all since been demolished to make way for the new marina development. I hope you enjoy this video as it almost got lost forever in amongst the old family VHS tapes.
Footage is Copyright to Martin Staines.
I went to Portishead Primary school from 2006-13, it's amazing to me that the whole Marina area looked so drastically different before the redevelopment and the construction of the school
I lived Portishead(Blackdown Rd) and my father helped to construct the new as it was then power station. Sad to see hard work gone now.
The difference between then and now is amazing.
I remember that ghostly silence and old industrial buildings around Bristol in early 80s...
Great video. I remember all this and Albright and Wilson's place. Played there as a teenager. Father worked in the powerstation in the sixties.
My father, John (Jack) Low was maintenance superintendent at the power station in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Used to cycle there in all weathers from our home in Clevedon. Names like Farrant and Sid Drapier spring to mind. My older brother, John also worked on shift there.
I used to live on Brampton Way and I could see the power station on the horizon for years until the knocked it all down!
This is a very nostalgic video as in 1987 I was five years old and remember the docks being like that, all deserted and decrepit.
Your video is good as it has no music or commentary just someone taking in the eerie silence and the odd passerby (and boat/helicopter!). Thanks for sharing this with us.
Really appreciate you taking the time to post this, many memories as a school boy hanging out in that area in the early 80's, always seemed warm there and quiet.
Moored there today. Boy has it changed.
i grew up in Portishead i remember playing there as a kid we had grate fun me and my friend playing around the doc aria my grand dad worked on the docks and he pants the tall towers that dominated the portihvead and avon mouth cost line. i steel live here and i have seen Portihead change so much since i was young
Fascinating, many thanks for making it available.
Wow!! My old playground!! I lived on station road!
Interesting footage. It was only 1987 - looks like the 1950s! I took my barge into Portishead marina (from Bristol) about 7 years ago to wait for the tide on my way up to Sharpness. In this footage it looks like I wouldn't have had that opportunity and would have had to wait outside like that boat is doing.
That was ace! 2 of the chimneys have gone already from the power station
Pity they couldn't have incorporated the power station building structure into the marina development plans (like Bankside and Battersea) Everything that now exists at the marina could still have been included but with a new and massive cultural centre for the whole region as the icing on the cake.
My grandad worked at the power station for many years, he and my nan would be so sad to see that their little village had expanded so much
we used to use the two chimneys as part of the navigation course from sharpness to portishead sit and wait in the mud before waiting for water and going up into Bristol, it was better before the Marina was there

Grew up in Portishead my Uncle was a formen at the station & my Great Grandad unloaded the coal ships
This town is better than in 1987 they knocked down the factory and built houses on it

Don't quite know how to do this but I remember the Marina as it was - the boat that never quite got repaired, the chimneys coming down, the skeleton of an old rowing boat, the lovely flowers [wild orchids amongst them] I walked my dogs all over this area and much prefer it to the Marina as it is now. Thank you for showing this!
Portishead Dock! Not a "marina"
I live on marjoram way
