  • Cracked windshield seal, glass, and trim removal and replacement with used OEM glass and used probably aftermarket seal. Coated with fluid film In the channels to protect against rust where the paint was damaged in removal. I did not use sealant as I want to try again to
    This is a 1983 240d that had it's hood fly up and bash it in. I carefully removed the donor windshield, seal, and trim in one piece from a parts car long ago and that process is not documented here as are a few other steps but some of those are obvious.
    This is my first car, owned by me since 2006 that I am trying to keep afloat. You will see more videos on this car.
    In the meantime, enjoy the show!

    Mad props to you for doing that job in the winter! Also, this is a very good video. I was totally vibing with the music!
    I'm currently doing a rear windshield replacement. I wouldn't have known about the rope trip if I didn't find your video. I hope you still have the car!

    You said it's an aftermarket seal. That is an automatic sealant situation. When it comes to rubber, the value of genuine MB always comes out in the fit(won't curl up), performance, and longevity. MB rubber compound really is phenomenal. For that particular seal I say buy once cry once. The windshield seals on these cars have lasted 30 years for a reason. After the redo on that seal you will be doing it again in a few years. It's always time vs $.

    Update 2/16/21 First rains and snow melts have come and definitely brought me a very wet floor and even though this was normal from my firewall corner rust holes, I think using no sealant on the windshield has brought in extra water. I plan to film a higher quality part 2 of taking it out the proper way with sealant in a few months and will also continue documenting the process of making my car less leaky.

      Yeah, a part 2 would be a HIGHLY anticipated piece of media for me haha... can't wait to take out my rear windshield on my leaky 1980 w123. Can't go an inch along the rubber seal without it being split along the way. Otherwise, I really like the music, got its own charm to it

      One question: how worried should I be about the lip being rusted out? I don't want to have to weld anything like I've read about in the forums, since I don't have access to welding equipment im only working with a barebones setup, no garage even. The car has no visible signs of rust outside bordering the windshield. I believe the car to have spent most its life down south, in a hot climate, and I got it delivered to nyc a month back. There's been lots of heavy rain these past 2 weeks

      Yeah I've seen it on a couple of w123 by now but mine was fine. I think the move would be get a small amount of epoxy sealant to encase the the rusted part of the sill after neutralizing the rust, as long as it's not so far gone that the seal won't sit right. I would stay away from any bondo or fiberglass in that area.

      @@mibble i think I've just about mustered up the courage to replace the rear windshield of my 300, and I have one question for you. Where do you get that particular rope you used to seal the windshield

    • @mibble
      @mibble  Před 3 lety

      @@alextryniski8597 it was a little under a quarter inch cotton cord I had laying around. It fit the channel pretty snuggly. Be gentle with the aluminum trim

    Your supposed to remove all the time except the dash to do the job and you need black sealant for rubber to metal clear sealant for glass to rubber

    Hi - hoping you can help: When you take off the chrome trim, would you be able to put sealant behind the seal? I've got a leak that's running behind my seal and I've been told to put sealant behind my seal. I just want to know if you think that's possible once the chrome is off? I don't want to take the chrome off if it isn't - thanks so much!

    @mibble this is a great video! My '83 240D recently took a big rock to windshield. I'm hiring some modern windshield experts to tackle the job cuz I'm not up to the challenge as you were, and I'm certain they haven't encountered a w123 before. I'm going to share this with them! Any chance I can get the documentation you showed in the video?
    PS I LOVE the snow skidding. Gonna try that next winter 😎 Here's a good one on w123 snow play czcams.com/video/Q6Hm02c0418/video.html&pp=ygUSc2lyc3BlZWQgdzEyMyBzbm93

    Shouldn’t you take the chrome off first ? I’m watching hoping to find out hot to take the trim off and just see you hacking it with a razor blade ..

    • @mibble
      @mibble  Před rokem +1

      Yes if your going to re use your seal. But your supposed to leave in the top part in as the window is pushed out.
      It’s faster to cut the seal out and less chance of bending trim if you have a new seal.

      So easy to bend that trim and make your reinstall ten times more difficult.
