  • In this Unity augmented reality tutorial Matthew Hallberg shows us how to use Vuforia area targets for cross platform indoor localization on Android and IOS. You can scan your house with a lidar enabled IOS device or a Matterport camera and bring the scan into Unity. There you can design the space or create interactions however you want!

    An ultrasonic sensor uses sound (sonar) to gather it's data, while lidar uses FREAKING LASERS (haha seriously, Wikipedia it if you don't believe me) to gather it's data... Moreover, lidar has better range, yet it doesn't do well with non-porous objects. Rawr; I think the real-innovation here is Vuforia's object-detection/cross-analysis software - the fact that it can localize with little lag is stunning. It's a bit expensive to get you off the ground, if your hardware game is lacking (mine was) but it totally feels like magic when you get it working :D

    So amazing. This opens up so many possibilities. It really can be the content management system for the world. Now we can use IOT sensors to interact with actual objects. We can put the iot sensors in everything . We won’t need bodies anymore just unity and an iPad clamped to a Segway hahaha . No but for serious been wanting something with accuracy like this. Thank you for always being on the crest of the MR wave. I appreciate your videos immensely and am always inspired to create after you put out a video.

    FYI you can share the scan data from the vuforia app by clicking the little cloud drive icon and then swiping on the one you want to share. Left for share, right for delete.

    I recently tried to build an AR app with Unity Engine using Area Targets. Image Targets works perfectly. When I build the app with Area targets, i can't see the objects I added in the scene. What could be the problem. I can see the Area Object in the editor.

    Would it be possible/any point, in brushing up the scanned mesh(pointcloud??) in Blender or something, or would you loose the ability to real space track it?? Coul you tune something to improve the tracking?

    Matthew- WOW, Thank you for the share. Your sample run at 4:56 is amazing. Could you have localization using Oculus Quest2 and passthrough video with a mixed reality over pass-through? This would give a ‘hand-free’ look around the Halloween objects.

    Great tutorial. You scanned the environment using the Vuforia Area Target Creator app for iOS, but when you run your app on an Android device? Can you show an occlusion sample? If someone walks on the scene, will this person appear over the virtual models?

    Hello, great tutorial! I've tried to do this with an iPhone 12 Pro and I can get the scanned environment in Unity but when I add 3D objects they aren't shown in the build on the Android phone. Is there anything I can do, any tips and tricks??

    I seem to be getting an error when I drop my scan into Unity
    NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object
    The difference I see is when importing the scan into Unity, the checkboxes in the "Import Unity Package" window for the .glb files (navmesh and authoring) aren't checked and can't be checked
    Any thoughts?

    Hey :D Got this to work! yay me! nightmares packaging as always. Anyway, anyone know why when I am in my room that it keeps flickering the model on and off? I guess its losing location or the scan model maybe? bit annoying.. if I could make it more stable would be great :) Anyone?

  • @ericgilligan5576
    @ericgilligan5576 Před 2 lety

    I went and scanned my room.. great! Then put some crap around it.. Great! then built the app.. deployed it etc..opened it but.. when I do so it opens the 3d model but loses tracking from time to time. Is there a way to keep it open while it picks up the tracking model again. So when I move it keeps the 3d model on screen instead of flickering on and off?!?!? Anyone?
