When I was 14 years old, I had a friend for a year who I considered to be one of the closest people to me. He was always seemingly sweet and empathetic. Being young and naive, I went to his house for the first time when it was the two of us alone. We had become a bit flirtatious, yet I had a bad feeling in my stomach that I ignored the whole trip over and while we were there. He took me to his basement to “play video games” and attempted to rape me. I fought him physically for almost an hour and then he passed out. I sat on his couch completely dissociating from the situation. I was terrified, yet could barely react. When he woke up, he tried to pretend like he had no recollection of what happened. I felt completely out of myself and, despite being extremely angry and depressed, was in total shell shock. I didn’t leave his house. I talked with him and explained what happened, not really feeling there. He shrugged it off with a very casual “sorry”. Throughout the next year, I still saw him and believed he was my friend. I was deeply traumatized. Even after more sexual advances made on his part and even an instance when he threatened to lock me in his house (and I escaped), I wasn’t in reality and didn’t block him out of my life until I was 16. Aside from him, I have been raped by other men. Once when I was 7, then 8, then 13 from a camp counselor, and from age 14-16 I was continually raped by another high school “friend”. I had been groomed into being a toy for others from a young age. And I believed it. Those experiences have shaped me and I’m glad to say that, at this point in my life (20 years old), while still traumatized, I know who I am and will never bow down to another person again. All of those people are out of my life. When I listen to your music, I deeply resonate with it. I don’t know why. But the emotions that come to me make me think of the pedophiles and disgusting people of my past and how, at this point, I can only see them as frightened boys. Children who grew up to be dangerous and don’t know how to think past themselves. Your music is inspirational and the essence of yourself that you capture and put out is special. Don’t stop being yourself - you kick ass. Fuck everyone who tries to tear you down. You will never be lower than the people who hurt you.
Thank you for sharing. I think, it's hard for a lot of people to grasp the scope of what you and others who are in similar situations experience, and how it came to be. I don't really understand how such environments come to be, where these things happens multiple times over someone's childhood by numerous people. Feminists talk about "rape culture" and your experience sounds like it fits the title. Yet from an outsider's perspective, the word "culture" suggests it's a common thing men are participating in, as an integral part of our culture. Now, I'm not one to know many people, so my experience means little, but everyone I know would help and defend, rather than hurt and abuse... It's a weird head space to be in, trying to piece the different, seemingly opposing parts of the puzzle together to make sense of what's going on in the world. I'm glad that you came out strong, were able to defend yourself in some occasions, and that you used those experiences to grow and become wise. I think not everyone would come out of this the way you have. I also appreciate your perspective of these people who hurt you as children who grew up wrong, It also shows a tremendous amount of compassion on your part... And I agree with you on that. I think our society turns to hate too quickly. While understandable, I think it stops progress and gets in the way of finding actual solutions. I've been registering to this a lot lately. I just wanted to share a little story of of how much I love this.. During the quarantine/rona my escape for all the crazy changes and life things happening at the time was staying up all night gardening under my strung "christmas" lights (yes in the summer) and taking early morning hikes almost everyday and learning to identify mushrooms. Truly one of the most peaceful and beautiful times I've had to look back on and this is like my sound track of the time frame. I love it sooo much
