Minister Schreiber not committing on ZEP yet, says the focus is on “getting it right”

  • New Home Affairs Minister, Dr Leon Schreiber, has not taken a position yet on the future of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit. He says he will focus on 'getting it right'. Recently, a Constitutional Court order dismissed his predecessor's bid to appeal the Gauteng High Court ruling that invalidated the decision to terminate the ZEP. The ZEP, which will expire in November 2025, allows approximately 178 000 Zimbabweans to live, work and study in South Africa. The ruling, which places the future of the ZEP squarely in the hands of Schreiber, affirms that any decision about the permit must be preceded by a rational, constitutionally fair process.
Schreiber, from the Democratic Alliance, has told SABC News about his plans for Home Affairs, and the work ahead in addressing the country's migration challenges.

Gone are the day's the staff get's into work, normally late, read the newspaper over a cup of coffee and then by 10am DECIDE to serve the public - by that time they're normally OFFLINE so's they can plan for their lunchtime without interruption. Been there - seen it with my OWN EYES. Ask ANY South African - losing or having your ID book stolen is the ultimate in WORST NIGHTMARES.

Companies should be taxed for every foreign national they employ. We have skilled workers in South Africa who are currently unemployed and struggling to find opportunities. South Africa is experiencing a brain drain, losing valuable talent to other countries. How can we expect a South African to compete with an American, European, or Chinese worker if they are not given a fair chance in their own country?
Japan offers a valuable lesson for South Africa. The Japanese workforce policy prioritizes its local talent, ensuring that their citizens are the first to benefit from the country's economic opportunities. By adopting a similar approach, South Africa can empower its workforce, reduce unemployment, and foster economic growth.
Let's prioritize our own skilled workers and create an environment where South Africans can thrive and contribute to the nation's prosperity.

The Headline is misleading. The Honorable Minister must handle the ZEP issue with proper guidance and recommendations from The Pretoria High Court Judgement as well as the Constitutional Court Judgement. I am glad he mentioned that the ZEP issue must be rectified amicably to avoid the embarrassment of losing court cases.
