If you read the reputable sources. They probably weren't friend but temporarily lodged together. But i think what the film maker was trying to show was how talented this man (despite the obvious barriers) really was.
Chevalier's music is exquisite but truthfully, not even close to Mozart's genius. Of course he had many other talents and is a movie-worthy character, no doubt.
Not this particular scene, but Joseph was friends and roommates with Mozart in Paris, and some of Mozarts violin concertos were influenced by Joseph’s work.
