Simon Phillips is one of the greatest drummers on the planet and has played with everyone from Judas Priest to The Who to Toto to Hiromi Trio Project. The man is one of the true legends of the drum kit and his work with Derek Sherinian is legendary. One of the best careers ever in music. Fantastic interview
Simon's performance on The Who's Tommy (1989) has to be one of the greatest drum performances ever recorded. He also played on Jon Anderson's Animation album as well as Mike Rutherford's Small Creeps Day. What a career!
Definitely.
I started getting into rock music around 1982/1983 and over time i would learn who played what with who. It was during this live performance by the Who that I was asking who this drummer was. I was learning the instrument at the time. Anyways, I've been a fan of Simon ever since!
Even played the track "Don't Get Me Wrong" by the Pretenders and a track for Tears for Fears' -"Year Of the Knife" - on top of everything else he's done.
In 1980 Simon came to Sydney, Australia and did a clinic. Every drummer in Sydney was there who wasn't working that night and everyone was astounded. I saw his towel in the bass drum and pinched the idea, like many others, and have been using it ever since. One of a kind musician. Excellent interview.
What a treat to hear such an intelligent dialogue.
Love the album and the video performances. Really wishing they release the entire performance in 5.1 Blu-ray.
Thanks for an interview with one of my favorite overall musicians: Great drummer, composer, producer, engineer and band leader! The Sherinian/Phillips live album is astounding!
Thanks for watching!
I think the first record I heard Simon play on was 801 live with Phil Manzanera and Eno from Roxy Music. Been a fan ever since, buying albums that he played on even if I didn't like the band eg Judas Priest. I've also got many of his solo albums and his instructional vids on vhs and dvd. Nothing unusual about that except I'm a guitarist, not a drummer.lol
I saw Simon in 1976 at the Reading Festival playing with 801.
He had a white Ludwig double bass kit and was sporting a green beanie hat .
Epic gig.Simon really is incredible.
Cheers.
This live record smokes!
Great interview. Thanks.
Thanks! it does!
Simon is a PHENOMENAL DRUMMER who has graced soooo many projects that I've listened to!!! The song that really blew me away the first time I heard it and still does is "Manganese"! Thank you for a great interview!!! It's awesome to know that Simon writes on the keyboard!!! To hear that Simon and Anthony, two of the most amazing and respected musicians in the world struggled with Hiromi's charts is a revelation and extremely humbling! Very sage advice by Simon regarding recording, mixing, producing, and arranging!
Great one, Roie...I'm interviewing Simon to promote this album next week!
Great interview :) Glad to listen to the titans of music!
Thanks for watching!
just baught the album
The most rounded drummer composer producer mixer mastering engineer of the last few decades.
I asked Simon if he was more creative on stage, in practice, or in studio. He said, “I hope all of them”. Got me good, thought he’d pick one…….nope.
Good interview, Roie.
Thanks!
Makes my Passage To Agra conversation with Simon pale in comparison on the spiritual level.
