In Greek, κοπέλα (or κοπελιά in some dialects) means young woman. Coppélia premiered on 25 May 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial de l'Opéra, with the 16-year-old Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the principal role of Swanhilda and ballerina Eugénie Fiocre playing the part of Frantz en travesty.
Coppélia is a ballet about a village square in Galicia where a burgomaster's daughter is betrothed to a handsome young villager. On the eve of their wedding, the bride has second thoughts about her fiancé's feelings when she sees him ogling at a beautiful girl on the balcony of a strange toymaker. The toymaker, Dr. Coppélius, has created a beautiful mechanical doll named Coppélia that is so realistic that the villagers mistake her for his daughter. The bride, Swanilda, becomes frustrated that her fiancé has fallen in love with a doll and tries to uncover the secret behind it. Swanilda and her friend sneak into the toymaker's house and discover that Coppélia is actually a mechanical doll.
