For the first time, the young Italian talent Matteo Mancuso shares the stage with the living legend Al Di Meola.
Songs:
1. Spain ( Light as a Feather, 1971 ) - Chick Corea
2. Mediterranean Sundance ( Elegant Gypsy, 1977 ) - Al Di Meola
Special thanks to:
Robert Harder: FOH engineer
Alessandro Vespone: cameraman - Hudba
Al Di Meola has always been one of my favorites players. I've just discovered Mancuso, and to see Al promote this enormously talented young man just warms my heart!
♾️🔆👍
the great Steve Vai turned me onto Matteo recently. big Al fan since his Elegant Gypsy days. truly amazing interplay between two great musicians.
I agree; it's heart warming to see Al really show his natural enthusiasm for such a great young guitar talent; sometimes older artists are too intimidated to do that, but Al isn't too worried; his legacy is already awesome! Al is absolutely right; the kid is maybe a once in a century talent; great at everything Gypsy Jazz to Dream Theater to Holdsworth to Guthrie; insanely skilled at a wide variety of genres!
Al uses a pick and is much louder
@@grantkoeller8911 The mix You're hearing has nothing to do with technique; we aren't hearing an accurate representation of what we'd hear from the guitars unamplified live.
Also Matteo has plenty of volume, but it's true that Al seems to hit the strings harder the faster he goes, sometimes too hard, killing the notes by slapping the strings against the fretboard.
I've been listening to Al for about 40 years and I've never seen him react this way with another musician on stage. it reminds me of a proud father who is playing with his son and wants to share this young man's talent with the world. They both sounded great and during the performance I kept thinking of Paco. Its amazing how music can forever touch our souls.
Yes, I keep thinking of Paco throughout this performance. I wish we could have seen him and Matteo together. Matteo is definitely holding the torch for the newest generation of players. He's unbelievably great..and so young too. I love that he's playing all these older tunes and making his own path elsewhere.
Al is simply a great human being. Don to earth. 👍🏻
The student has surpassed the teacher.
It is so pleasing to know that the guitar future is in safe hands with Matteo
So beautifully said. Wish I'd thought of it!
Both use their right hands in unique playing styles. Al uses his wrist and his elbow stays quiet , whereas Matteo is all about using his fingers and no pick.
They're both talking to each other through their playing 😊
@@cinders302 I agree they're both fabulous players but none of what you mention is novel. Picking from the wrist is simply the RIGHT way to pick, especially at really high speeds. You can't sustain that speed for long if picking from the elbow. Matteo's finger style is standard Classical guitar form.
@@jeromejamies3641 Really? Is that so? What authority makes one style of music DEFINITELY better than another? And how do you measure "soul" objectively?
Technically, doesn't "soul" have the most "soul?" Lol
@@jeromejamies3641 LOL this is so innane... You think that even someone like Taylor Swift doesn't pour all the love, dedication and passion she can muster in her music?? That doesn't mean her music is a standard... So explain because it seems you're arbitrarily making up ideas.
To have Al dimeola call you a good guitarist is pinnacle of guitar achievements.
Matteos playing is so damn clean it's insane..
And smooth…
💯
The kid is better on the Friday Night tune. More precise. Is probably due to his right hand picking technique.
@@craigellsworth3952 Link?
@edwnorris The song I mentioned is one of the ones they played. Half way through. Al did well, but isn't anywhere near as perfect as the kid. Al was fast, bug not precise. The kid is.
Al Di meola plays like a volcano and Matteo Mancuso plays like a wind. together they are harmonious storm. Bravo.....
The passing of the torch. Timeless. A hero's journey.
DiMeola's rhythm playing is as phenomenal as his solos.
Yes, In terms of phrasing and solos, they were almost on par. But in rhythm playing, Al's was much more tasteful and complimentary to the melody.
Think Al is the greatest rhythm guitarist ever,it`s always overlooked because of the phenomenal lead playing, same with Van Halen

Al and Ed were friends and both were fans of each other.
Matteo said once in an interview he had Al's poster in his room from early childhood. Imagine the sheer joy he would experience, performing beside and being so revered by his idol. Historic moment!
It’s good when the student surpasses his teacher, or idols. That’s the way supposed to be I guess.
I haven’t heard Mediterranean Sundance played like this since Paco de Lucia, John Mclaughljn and Al Dimeola blew my mind nearly 30 years ago. Beautiful
Simply amazing how a young kid such as Matteo is capable of standing on a stage with such a legend as Al Di Meola and being able to look at him in his eyes and not fear the comparison, always with his smile and humility which makes him even greater as a musician and as human being.......bravo Matteo!!!
actually it is DiMeola to fear the comparison.
@@MorbusWhipple Honestly I agree. DiMeola is a phenom, but Mancuso has such a unique playing style I think he steals the show!
Not a young kid! Now 27...
Matteo is brilliant. Very very brilliant. And he has years ahead of him. The guitar world should rejoice.
When the legend helps another become a legend.
So happy for Al to have someone in the Paco de Lucia realm to jam with I loved those 2 together. Mateo has so many things to offer guitar wise! Al you have been my hero and inspiration for 50 years now with Mateo the guitar world is definitely in good hands. Thanks for all the years of amazing playing!!❤
The next generation of young lion plays with the old grand master, respect! Both are destined to be enshrined in the annals of music history. Kudos to Al for giving a platform to Mateo, who is one of the most gifted young players in these times.
Paco de Lucia is sorely missed.... But his legacy lives on in this young Lion ..
wrong he is the first of a new generation a giant step for all guitar player
You said annals
@@RD-jr8nv Yes. Annals means historical records.
Kudos, Al Di Meola for giving Matteo this stage. I have been listenig to Meola for 30+ years now, and just recently encountered Matteo. Thanks for that!!!
I keep mixing up Matteo with Mattel. You know, the toy manufacturing company?
Bravo Matteo! Great to see a young and talented guitarplayer taking over the torch from the great ones before him, with his own style and unique talent.
Grazie.

man, matteo's playing is so clean... its ridiculous
@@robertmichael1797 why? he is pretty fucking good on classical too
You hear every note even at 1000 bpm, it’s insane.
I'm Brazilian and wanna go to Italy just to see Matteo and other great italian musicians! You're insane!
The Brazilian guy Matteus is great too
After your first song if Al gets up & bows to you you know you got something special . Respect !!!!
Like a young Paco DeLucia up there. You can tell Al is in awe of the enormity of his talent and that is impressive in and of itself.
Yes I see Paco about him, great talent.
Al and John McLaughlin need to take Matteo on the road for a new version of the guitar trio.
nah. That was something special. John Al and Paco were all in their prime. Matteo can form his own super trio with other current phenoms
@@TraderKing83 Yes I agree, he can, and I think he should. But it would be nice seeing him playing with Al, and John, because honestly, there are many guitar players that can sit and "fill" Paco's place; but personally I think that currently he is the only guitar player that can even surpass it.
@@Dovith Mate, Dimeola is so far past his prime its painful to listen to. John Hates Al D and always has. Paco was a god among men, and on the nylon none of them did or will ever come close. Paco, rest his soul was one in a billion and even though I think Mancuso is talented, they are like comparing apples to oranges. Matteo is good on the acoustic but he excels on electric and is more akin to guthrie or holdsworth. Paco at his peak was UNREAL.
@@TraderKing83 Agree, but my point is that for me it would nice to see the three of them playing together. I also think that Al has not come out with anything interesting for a long long long time. I find his solo álbums extremely boring except one or two.
Great idea. but John is 81 years old now and Al is 10 year younger, and poor paco has passed, maybe it’s time too pass the baton over to this guy he’s superb!!
That moment when Al Di says you're an amazing guitar player.
Imagine the mental capacity to remember all of the notes in these pieces, never mind the phenomenal guitar playing.
Long time ago Al praised Matteo and now at last they play together.
Two guitar masters!
You can see the admiration and respect for Matteo in Al's eyes, just fantastic .
I call it fear
This isn’t a boxing match.
They both were beaming at the end. God, for Matteo to realize his dream of playing with his guitar hero. That must have been just fascinating for him... AND for Al as well. The son that Al never had 😊❤
Wonderful performance.... You have to give to Al, he's one of the best ever and he's taking his time to present and promote a young, relatively new Italian player coming along his lines and it's just really cool to see Al take the time to do this - not to mention, it's a smoking performance!!!
Matteo is one of the best right hand fingerstyle players on the planet! Paco DeLucia would've loved this kid!! They both show us what is possible. I do most right hand techniques, but have always kept my fingerstyle. So glad I did! As I get older I seem to be favoring it more and more... in part due to this young virtuoso lol. There's just more you can do that way and it feels more organic. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here! :)

I found Matteo’s tone sweeter. Al is a legend. Matteo is going places
Oh, no doubt. Matteo is the entirely new, next evolutionary step, just like Tosin Abasi or those guys from Polyphia are in rock, but it's beautiful to see all that mutual respect and appreciation.
Well, Matteo's playing with his fingers. Just that alone changes the character of his delivery and tone. if you use a pick, here's always going to be some string noise. Also, the sound of Al's guitar seems to have a little too much high end off the board; maybe it's preamp on the acoustic along with those mics surrounding him.
It's hard to ever expect much from a nylon string true a pa with a crappy pickup system.. never sounds good. Plastic on plastic.
that has much to do with how the guitar is amplified
@@paoli91 Well, then..., that's even worse, because.., now watching the video again, I realize that the other guitar has a cable going somewhere into the board or an amp..., so..., you actually made my point stronger. Both played great, Al's guitar was was not very good.
Ascolto Al Di Meola dagli anni '80. Grazie! Il mondo ha bisogno di questa meraviglia! 🔝❤️
I sat in front of Al in complete amazement when he was 19 years old playing with RTF… and the happiness in his face when he watches Matteo play is so gratifying
During an interview a few years ago, Al Di Merola said he was impressed by a young Italian guitarist Matteo Mancuso, who played beautifully with an unusual technique, in a "clean and fast way" with his right hand fingers so well, without a pick.
In this beautiful performance, Al appears happy and enthusiastic, Matteo trained, concentrated and excited...great Artists.
Wow! That's some of the best back and forth I've ever heard. You can feel the mutual respect and admiration by two masters of their craft. That was a treat to watch!
One of the es most amazing things about Matteo is that he can play many styles and genres of music with virtuoso skills. Incredible!!!
because he has no style of his own
@@johndumoulin5808and Is this bad? For once I don't think so, Mancuso Is a machine, he Is becoming the standard or perfection.

Just discovered Matteo myself. Give him 20 yrs to season. He looked like he was going to poop out a couple of times. Al loved it.
It's my hope that when people come across this that they remember the world is worth saving. Beautiful playing guys!
I'd like to add that so is music worth saving. The contemporary generation is missing out live music or even knowing of bands and their music/songs
Two masterful maestro's conversing fluently! A generation (42yrs) apart in ages! The torch 🔥⚡️☄️♨️ is passed on 👏🙌👐🤝🤲💪✌️🤞👋
Both speaking the same language in harmony. That was a treat!
MM tone is out of this world the no pick kills the pick !
Grandi musicisti.
Two things blew me away here:
- The incredible musicianship (timing and execution!). I’ve followed Al since the early 70’s, seeing him many times with RTF. And, been an IG fan of Matteo for several years (incredible on electric with his groups/Italian compadres).
- and, secondly… stunned by the number of people in an early audience cutaway, who were looking at their phones in their laps during an amazing rendition of Spain !! Beyond me - why were you even there people?
Best to both of these amazing players👏😁
Maybe they were googlin Matteo immediately :-)
Yeah, I also found the audience utterly dull.
We would be hootin' and hollering..I too have seen Al in Buffalo, Tokyo and Mt.Fuji. Been following him since Ricky and Danny turned me on to The Jester in '75
I have been an Al di meola and Strunz and Farah fan for over 20 years. As brilliant and virtuosic as their music is, it is very unbalanced and chaotic at times. To someone who is new to their music this can seem like unrelenting runs especially with no singing or percusive accompaniment.
May be people don't care about guitar speed showcase. Perhaps music is too boring for some. Just playing scales over chord changes... who knows...
Al is obviously an awesome player and has been for forever now, but seeing Matteo playing just makes me wonder how much more awesome he will be in the future! Great to see that virtuosity is still appreciated amongst the current generation we live in where kpop, rap, and hip-hop get the spotlight.
Real talent can never die. Can only keep getting better. For those that can hear it are gifted too. Those who can't were not meant to.
I saw Al Di Meola in the 1970's in Portland OR with his band when he was touring with Weather Report, what a fantastic show! And now with my current favorite guitarist, the young Matteo Mancuso, musical genius!!!
Two excellent musicians having a conversation. 😊🦅🎸
We are proud of Matteo. He deserves all this. He is one of the best musicians today out there.

The fast stuff is always amazing but the slow solo's are just beyond crazy. Even though they improvise they still have to think where they wanna go and the selection of notes really bring a lot of flavour and colour to the music. Out of this world skills❤

It's GREAT that Al with his generosity has given due credit and space to this WONDERFUL young master. Matteo...you are simply TOO GOOD FOR WORDS!!!😉😊
the best al di meola duet I haven seen in years...!
Al was only 19 when he was picked up by Chick Corea to be a member of Return to Forever and became a guitar hero. We are living in different times, but there should be no doubt in anybody's mind that young Matteo is just as capable of becoming one.
My thoughts are right along this line.
@deanronson6331 "Becoming" a guitar hero?
Commovente.
Al , the guitar legend, di Meola surely played these songs more than 5000 times...that showcases the big talent of Matteo Mancuso...
Al Di Meola was once the young upstart... I wore out every recording listening to him wondering if anyone would be up to his standards... then I discovered Struns and Farah,.... awesome.... now Matteo.... the grace shown by Al is great to see.... recreating a moment he shared with Paco Delucia.... John Mclaughlin. Wonderful to see and hear such musicianship!
This kid uses his fingers to pick strings like Paco de Lucia! Truly talented young man!
He plays with fingers on electric guitar also which is phenomenal and quite unique. I sincerely think Mateo Mancuso is the best young guitar player in the world today.
"Like" is the key word. Definitely not "as" Paco. Paco was fierce and vibrant and FLAWLESS. It is an incredible honor to be asked to sit in his chair and he humbly accepted. And I love this performance!
Yeah. Steve Oliver does the same thing... amazing !!!
With so many ‘torch burns’ happening by the machine it is great to witness this ‘torch passing’. It brings a smile to one’s heart. Many have no idea but I carried a cassette tape of Paco’s music with me on tour and played it when I was not on the bandstand through my Sony Walkman. Brings back such memories of his fire and precision. The idea of creativity and imagination being over may be true for those that buy into that nonsense. The flame continues to burn. 🎵🎶🔥
The young man is real MONSTER. A GREAT Discovery Al ...and may I say Chick and Paco are smiling down😀
Thank you Al for giving this beautiful opportunity to get to know Matteo, your duo is a real pleasure to watch and Matteo is indeed simply amazing! Meanwhile I discovered his electric band and I’m a big fan already! Thank you both for this great musical moment!
I´m lost for words. We have a star and an incoming star. Can´t ask for more.
I love Maestro Di Meola's current place as elder statesman and ambassador of virtuosic guitar. He could not pick a better artist to highlight than Matteo Mancuso! I was looking at the mics and cables for both, and wondering if anyone else felt that Matteo's sound, as presented here, was more gentle, round and buttery than Al's. It is such a challenge to blend the signals of nylon string guitars on stage in this way. I love this performance!
Right hand - pick vs. fingers.
Fantastic. I hope more established names showcase Matteo's guitar playing.

Paco was the greatest Flamenco guitarist to date, complex and unmatched genius and technique. To make comparisons is foolish and is to miss the beauty of enjoyment and confidence in growing talent.
Al did not invite Matteo Mancuso to expose him to a comparison but - as a mature musician - to give him a platform for further growth and stimulation. The "Us" of music grows with these measured and wise influences and proposals.

I'd lost all hope that there would ever be a new guitarist that could touch me...take me away to another plane...like Al first did when I put the needle to the groove of Flight Over Rio in 1977 when I was a very young teenager. Involuntary tears came to my eyes!!! we are in the presence of angelic excellence. Mere words fail me!! Highest praise indeed!!
Al certainly gave the young maestro a workout here. Al is relentless in his virtuosic playing and it's up to everyone else to catch up. Matteo is certainly up to the job and his playing here is phenomenal. You have to be world class to share a stage with Al and Matteo is definitely that.
I think it's the other way around. Matteo plays cleaner and faster than Al.
So it's all down to how fast you can play is it and I thought it was the music that was all important. Al has a massive musical legacy starting with Return to Forever when he was just 19 whereas Matteo is a great player but he has yet to show his compositional skills.
Of course it's not just about how fast you can play. It's about feel and emotion. I think that Matteo does that too. And you were saying that Al gave him a workout, which obviously is not the case. Matteo plays with ease.
Matteo...grandioso!
Al has aged very well...i had his records in the 70's...where will Matteo be at age 60? THAT is the insanity of Matteo...Matteo is in Al's musical world here and effortlessly fits the style...now, Matteo can shred metal, country, pop...he is like 10 guitarists in one...playing different genres/styles well takes a lot of time and effort to absorb...this guy is early 20's? his mind is brilliant...
I haven't seen Al Di Meola play that hard in a very long time...he was getting after it with Matteo alongside! Well done to both!
Insane! Insanely, beautiful!! You could tell it was a challenge by Al and Matteo passed the test!
