This was on the first LP I ever bought - 1812 and other overtures with Nicolai Malko and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Some of these 'other overtures', including this one, seem to have fallen into almost obscurity. What a shame! Great performance of an exciting piece. Thank you so much for sharing.
Savanoff technique of conducting quickly implemented. Savanoff was my piano teachers piano teacher’s piano teacher’s teacher at the Moscow Conservatory.
Just before and up to 0:35 something very important occurs (Savanoff style switch!)…… this is the best conducting I’ve seen in a while. Conductor and orchestra are one entity… P.S……Savanov (alternate spelling) is in my musical lineage!
I love these old 'warhorses' - overtures like 'Poet and Peasant', 'Mignon', 'Light Cavalry', 'Oberon', 'Merry Wives of Windsor' - all ignored by musical snobs, but gems in their own right.
This is also one of my favorite transcriptions for symphonic band. I have conducted this piece many times,. It has never failed to excite players and audience alike. It's' what we call a 'War Horse" in the business. When I taught HS, it was on my revolving literature list. This assured that every student I taught got to play it. It's fun, technically challenging and most importantly teaches LYRICISM!! The final element so important , and yet seemingly ignored by so many contemporary composers.
Was this an encore? If so what a lucky audience. I just wish I could have been there. Indeed rare repertoire for Maestro Sawallisch but just look at his expression and how he enjoys conducting this. A real treasure. Thank you for this posting.
The most expressive conducting I have ever witnessed a la Savanoff (my teachers teachers teachers teacher). (R.N.F. Luchonok > E. Gabelman > J. Kehvinne > Savanoff)
I sure love this principal clarinetist, apart that some of the throat and lower tones were hard to hear, but that might have been something to do with mic'ing, hard to say if you weren't there. But all in clarino and altissimo very clear and nice ring, good line and nuance.
Umožňuje to lepší, naléhavější výraz.
it's fascinating - and distressing - why a such a good composer just drifted off into obscurity .... with just the one overture from dozens of operas surviving in the mainstream repertoire .... What was it ? bad timing ? out of fashion style? wrong country ? ..... and an early death .... heartbreaking ...
first of all because im only 11, i say this piece is a little challenging for me... remember this is from the view of an 11 year, otherwise its a great song. bravo!!!!!!!
Played this 65 years ago in high school. This is a wonderful recording.
Played this 1 year ago in high school. Regardless of our age difference, we can both agree that yes, this performance of Zampa Overture is fabulous!
heard this when I was 9....I'm 57 now still love it...wonderfull
The best recording yet of this undervalued gem
+Noel Hetherington I agree!

I bought the exact same LP and this was truly the beginning of my love for classical music !
Me too!
Savanoff technique of conducting quickly implemented. Savanoff was my piano teachers piano teacher’s piano teacher’s teacher at the Moscow Conservatory.
Still a most amazingly conducted version
Very nice! This has been a favorite of mine for over 55 years. Great tempo! Thank you for posting this.
Yes, perfect tempi. Neither rushed nor excessively leisurely where appropriate
Happy Birthday to the Late Louis Herold Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
I LOVE this piece. Playing it with my orchestra in school, i'm 1st chair bass, and it's soooo fun :D
Love the clarinet solo! :) We're playing this in symphony orchestra, and it's amazingly fun!
I wonder how it would sound on flute instead? I have a bias 😉
A great performance!
Anda Panda cartoon brought me here for the full un altered piece! Magnificent at best !
Me too but I watched this cartoon when I was 10
Played the orchestral transcription of this in high school at state contest in 1987
Just before and up to 0:35 something very important occurs (Savanoff style switch!)…… this is the best conducting I’ve seen in a while. Conductor and orchestra are one entity… P.S……Savanov (alternate spelling) is in my musical lineage!
Great music! Great performance! A very special favorite of mine.
Magnífica execução de "Zampa - Overture"🎼🎶🎵👏👏👏👏

i love this piece!!! it's one of my favorites to play :D
I like this interpretation more than the other I found on here. I like it very much. Thanks a lot for the posting.
im playing this for string orchestra and this sounds awesome!!
I love these old 'warhorses' - overtures like 'Poet and Peasant', 'Mignon', 'Light Cavalry', 'Oberon', 'Merry Wives of Windsor' - all ignored by musical snobs, but gems in their own right.
Absolutely agree. They are so well orchestrated and full of unrestrained high spirits and virtuosity.
Excellent performance!

Tolle Aufnahme!

I have a complete Herold's ballet on CD, La Fille Mal Gardee.. great music

Beautiful melody of strings 🎶
¡Demasiado buena!

We played this in high school
California Youth Symphony associate orchestra is playing this :D
Yeah Im trying to figure that out too.
Sounds like the Bernstein version I carry around in my head, but more "orientalism" in some of the percussion. Has anyone ever done a ballet to it?
i know...pretty sure we will improve greatly in the next 5 or 6 weeks
How does a clarinet play 8:06????
hopefully..
Tolstoy, it's an overture!!!!!!!!!!!
Savallish at his best.Very good

Like , like , like.................................................
Did he put his baton in his suit jacket in the beginning?
I rather suppose that he lost his baton and was digged for another one - without success. And I am surprised that nobody else noticed this matter...

And now, to present this year's Drag Queen of the Year Award, last year's winner, put your hands together for... MISS RACHEL TENSIONS.

Yeah but we arent nearly this good yet xD
lol
It really annoys me when some people call pieces like this songs'. It is not a 'song'.
Thank you for saying this. A song is something that is sung.
Asians only, or was that one trombonist black?
This isn't a song.
