  • Roadworks have finally started to significantly improve cycling safety at Holborn, where London Cycling Campaign have pushed for change for over a decade.
Katy Rodda from the London Cycling Campaign gives a tour of the changes. The new design will include a fully protected cycle lane north to south along Proctor Street, timed traffic light phrases to give people a clear "time period" to cycle through completely separate from lorries, cars and buses, and new cycle holding spaces and protected filter lanes on the entries to the junction.
This work will completely transform Holborn, where we've protested twice in the past two years after Dr Marta Krawiec and Shatha Ali were killed. In 2022 we won changes around the Southampton Row part of Holborn where Marta was killed. Now this set of changes, due for completion in mid-2024, tackles the south side where Shatha was killed.

Not nearly as much as the cost of lives lost in this area over the years

It doesn't matter because apparently cyclists can't cause accidents only drivers

UK road budget 2022/23 £11 billion
UK active travel (walking and cycling) budget 2023/24 £50 million
      > Get angry at the amount we spend on cars, not the pittance we spend on cycling

Start paying road tax, get cycle insurance and most of all a test of some sort to show you ride safely. Most cyclists I come across are arrogant on the road. However yet again it's the drivers fault.

Been paying road tax since the 80s - it is part of council tax. What you may be referring to is vehicles emissions tax, which we also pay, but it is £0 because we do not produce emissions aside from our farts hahaha.
Drivers are to drive with due care, and yes cyclists also, towards pedestrians, most of which I have seen to do so (both cyclists and drivers). However when a driver fails to drive with due care, it can be deadly.

London Cycling Campaign provides cycling insurance for all of their members and the council provides free cycling training for anyone who doesn't feel confident on the road.
I don't think it's possible for people to do cycling licenses, but I would welcome a voluntary one. I think it would also be a good idea for drivers to redo their license every 10 years or so, every 5 years past the age of 50, many people get over confident, ignorant of new rules and it would be a good way to ensure that people whose reactions aren't what they used to be, are given extra advice and training before they go on to be a danger to others.

@MazHem So you would welcome a retest for drivers. Would you expect that to be at the drivers expense? Also if want to retest drivers because of awareness etc then surely that reinforces my argument about people on bikes having to take a test in the first place. There are way too many cyclists on the road that shouldn't be in that case. I do a hell of alot of driving all around the country in cities and out of them. I see people riding bikes that don't look safe riding at night with no lights and dark clothes. So tell me, if I knock one of these people off would you back the driver?

@@notasstupidasilookprobably There's already retests for people above a certain age, it would just be an expansion of the scheme.
If a pedestrian walks into the street, do you think that the driver is not at fault if they get hit? Are drivers not supposed to be aware of hazards?
If you are afraid of hitting cyclists because of your poor driving, I think you should support separated cycle lanes so that there's wouldn't be a risk, unless the driver does something as bad as mounting a pavement.
