  • Contemporary Indian artist Jayasri Burman had just returned from the south of France, where she saw Henri Matisse’s painting reprised on the objects in a chapel museum, including on the priest’s vestment. On her return, stylist Rhea Kapoor and fashion designers Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla brought her on board to hand-paint a lehenga for Radhika Merchant for one of her wedding ceremonies. The designers gave the artist full liberty and the artist said, “if Radhika is going to wear it, it should be a piece of art. It should not be a design on a cloth.” Burman, whose painting hangs in Radhika’s Jamnagar house, had just one month to paint the lehenga. She needed a fabric that falls like cloth. Silk needed six-seven months to be painted on. So, she chose acrylic paint on Italian canvas and painted every day for 16 hours for a whole month in her Delhi studio. Radhika just told Burman that “Anant doesn’t like green, Nita ji doesn’t like yellow, so please do something different. It should be a very happy colour.” Burman opted for pink because of the Ambani family’s affinity for the colour and it being an auspicious colour. And the animal motifs, especially elephants, were incorporated because of Anant Ambani’s fondness for them. The lehenga displayed 12 panels with the subject of togetherness, drawing on motifs from the universe: birds, animals, water, wind, flower, and human being, including musicians with garlands, who are celebrating the parinaya, the vivaah (marriage).
