Sydney to Perth Road Trip - In an old Toyota Corolla

  • In the month of November 2020, I moved from Sydney, NSW to Perth, WA.
It was that time of the year where all the International and Local borders were shut because of Covid 19 and travelling was not easy.
Being a Travel Adventure Photographer, I choose hard path over easy path. I look for challenges in every trip, such that i can make my trip more memorable.
For this particular trip, i decided to travel in my old toyota corolla 1998 car.
Yes! i opted car over flight.
I travelled for 4000kms in 6days covering the best places across 3 different states, i.e., NSW, SA & WA.
In this video i have covered the whole journey and the whole video was shot only using mobile camera

I drove a Honda Civic from Melbourne to Perth in 1973. I left at 7am Saturday with a mate. We were both teenagers and I think there was about 1500 km of dirt road. I think it was the old highway as I remember going through Ivy Tanks and getting fuel. 47 degrees and no air-conditioning.
We drove non stop and pulled into Perth 11 pm Sunday. Oh to be young again.

I'm from Fremantle. Currently living in Sydney. When I was a teenager l used to hitch hike from Perth to Melbourne. I was pretty fearless like most teens though. Maybe more than most, especially as a girl. Took 3 days. Most of the truck drivers used amphetamines to get the drive done. Different times back in the 90s. There's nothing like hitting the open road for a trip. I forgot how opened Perth looks. You can see the sky and the beaches are the best.. Definitely the best sunsets over the Indian ocean.

Hi Lillian. Left Ireland in 1986 at 18. Hitched from Perth to Melb took 3 days.
Got a truckie (Bob) out of Footscray TNT back to Perth took 36 hours. In the 80's truckie all used tabs to stay awake and drive. After one tab I was counting telegraph poles to Ballarat. JB

I drove from Kalgoorlie to Sydney. Easy peasy. 3 nights accommodation in motels 4 days driving. Nullabar plains being the highlight. Loads of places to stop and eat, fuel up all the time. Take loads of water and food plus back up phone and a some sort of shelter/tarpaulin etc in case break down and stuck in the sun outside your car. Was a fantastic experience the light and vegetation out West was unbelievable.

This is a great drive across Australia from someone in the USA that will never get to see it. Thank you so much! BTW, older Corolla's are well made legends as I could not imagine making that trip in an older European or American made vehicle, HA-HA. I also wanted to say what an eerie driving experience that must have been during Covid not seeing many people out and about and the local gov't mandate lockdowns one had to comply with. Those beautiful trees in Western Australia (around 13 mins. or so of video) during the day and sunset made me want to visit WA so badly. Not sure what type of trees they were but that area was incredibly beautiful. Thank you so very much for sharing your experience!

Nice one, Sadiq! I've done the Melbourne-Perth run well over a dozen times, starting in 1978. My late wife's parents lived in Perth, so we did the trip regularly. Even towed the Formula Vee race-car over in 1993 for the Nationals at Wanneroo (Barbagallo); got stopped five times by curious young police officers, wanting to perv on the car! It's a great run and I recommend it to anyone; I've done the drive solo and two-up and it's always nice; last time was in 2011. If I'm headed west I tend to pull up at around 4.00pm, as the sun's angle makes it hard to see the sides of the road and 'roo's/emu/wombat will make a real mess of the car if you hit one. Same in the early morning, too; give the wildlife time to disappear. I've had a few near-misses (one near Port Agusta got very close, as did one on the Newell some years earlier) and unfortunately having T-boned a 'roo west of Caiguna, I know first-hand that they can do a lot of damage!

    • @chrisweeks6973

@JAI.H0 Plan the trip, hop online or visit the RAC for info and become a member. Get the car serviced and make sure that belts, hoses and tyres (including the correctly-inflated spare) are in good condition and that fluid levels are correct. Carry tools for tyre-change, plus extra water for you and the car. If you do break down, hazzard flashers on and stay with the car. East of Norseman, sleep in the motels (c.$165/night) attached to the gas stations, rather than in the car, that way you'll get a decent sleep and food. Allow an extra money over city prices for higher fuel costs in remote places - today (8/8/22) unleaded is $2.48 and diesel $2.88/Lt at Nullabor Roadhouse. (Check petrolspy.com.au for current pricing )
If avoidable, don't drive for an hour either side of sunrise/set; wildlife will make a mess of the car if you hit something. Don't rush the trip and rest if tired; it's not a race, so take time out to see the many things along the way and be adventurous. Much better to arrive a day or so later than planned, rather than to arrive dead. It's a great trip that not many do, so enjoy it; it's something that you'll remember forever.

Dear Sadiq, thank you for documenting your trip and sharing your video. I travelled solo from Melbourne to Perth in May/June 2021 (right before the Delta outbreak lockdowns reached VIC and NSW) and lived in Perth for the next 8 months before leaving driving from Perth to Sydney in February 2022 (in the middle of the Omicron wave lockdowns in Eastern Australia). At that time, the WA border was closed completely to the rest of Australia and I was the only car vehicle driving on that looong stretch of road from Norseman to Eucla.
I wish I had documented my trip like you had. I must say, even though it was a solo road trip for me both ways, there was something adventurous and magical about the drive through SA and WA. The isolation, the nature, the sunrises/sunsets. And I'm sure you experienced this too, but driving from Eucla towards Norseman and even Calgoorlie I experienced the most interesting phenomenon: drivers waving to you from their vehicles. I never experienced this in Eastern Australia. THanks for oyur video. Cheers!

Aussie Road trips are the best! Best trip of my life was driving a 1975 Kombi camper from SA to WA. Such a fun trip taking our time and stopping where we wanted to, finding cool places to check out and enjoy the wilderness. The roof blew off in a storm on the Great Australian Bight which was an experience! Did the rest of the trip with roof tied onto the car. It was winter and really cold on the Nullabor (desert) and the heater didn’t work. We used a hand held spotlight to get more light to drive at night. Sounds like it should have been a horrible trip but I loved it and would love to do it again sometime:)

Old Toyota's are the best! We once drove 60kms on an "empty" tank in our old Cressida. Rolled into the Auski road house (Karjini WA) and the car ran out at the pump!! We love taking long road trips and love your video! Its simple and beautiful; its straight to the point without a heap of needless, irritating chatter! Well done!

I told you didn’t I though- sunsets in WA are the most beautiful! Take a trip to Mandurah please! That was our first home in Australia, I can write and sign you will not have seen a place like that before, it’s a small town on the estuary, beautiful homes and water everywhere and head down to Halls Head beach to watch the sunset from there :)
Also go to Fremantle, my favourite town near Perth. Absolutely Beautiful architecture full of character! Check the sunset out from the Port there

Liked yr video _ well done with no wasted time. Drove Melb-Darwin & back mid-60s 3 of us in an F150. Hot to Coober Pedy, so night drive to Alice Springs. Thanks for your story. Saw Ayers Rock, climbed it but too hot to enjoy the Olgas. All corrugated and after the 1st flat it was 18 mph back to Alice Springs. Food and Motel with Swimming Pool!! Saw almost 0 wild life, no problems with road kill. Thanks for your story . John C.

Driving from Bunbury to Sydney (Holden station wagon, then VW beetle) we had to camp by the dirt Eyre Highway in the late 1950s. It took several days to cross the Nullarbor because of the potholes and bull dust, unless you put your car on a train between Port Pirie and Kalgoorlie

I love driving long distances in Australia. The longer I live here the more beautiful and awe inspiring I find it. This makes me want to go road tripping again. I notice petrol in Southern Cross was $1.19. Now over $2. If it wasn't for all the imbroglio with the state borders back then it would have been a great time to long distance road trip.
