Help me convert my girlfriend to a metal head! Suggest what songs I should use to get her to appreciate metal, but don't throw her to the wolves. We need to break her in gradually. :) Here we get her to watching the music video to Metallica's Enter Sandman from their Metallica Black Album. This time we go in knowing that she LOVES this song. This will help us figure out what elements she loves about metal to help us select future songs for her.

A lot of people have trouble digesting metal because they've either never really listened to it, or they've dove in with some metal maniac's deathcore playlist and think everything else must sound like Cannibal Corpse. "Metal" is like saying "the color blue". Sky? Turquoise? Navy? All incredibly different, but all BLUE.

The reason I think people have trouble getting into metal is because it's so different than the music everyone grows up listening to. Pretty much everyone as a kid listens to popular music. The structures or metal songs are usually different and it's usually a lot more aggressive in nature lyrically and musically as it tackles taboo topics unlike pop music which is usually just typical happy bullshit like partying and stuff and the occasional song about someone being depressed. Also the reason I think she likes this compared to Master of Puppets is because Master of Puppets is again, Fast and aggressive as the song symbolizes cocaine abuse, hence the slow middle section when you finally get your high, followed by fast aggressive music again which is you searching for your next high. This song is very basic and "groovy" nothing complicated to digest, just a simple boom-bap boom-bap drum beat and a catchy riff. Not a very "aggressive" song in the true sense.

I've been trying to get my friends to listen to metal but they won't budge. It's pretty understandable tho bc I'm mainly a Slam / Slamming deathcore type person but nobody will give it a shot
Off the Master of Puppets you should have her listen to Sanitarium it's alot like Fade to Black. One is a great song off the Justice album. Bleeding Me is a good one off Load an album that alot of fans hate but is actually really good.

Speaking as someone who's been a Metalhead for 40 years, Metal is about tapping into that part of your psyche where primal urges lurk. The music is visceral and aggressive and males have a much easier time tapping into that than females. Don't believe me, go to some shows (if we ever get back to that) and survey the crowd. Look at the number of females compared to males at a show. Depending on the sub-genre, the ratio of females to males will swing widely with more females at shows for heavy metal, power metal, hair metal, and symphonic metal while shows for thrash metal, death metal, black metal and other extreme sub-genres will be more of a sausage-fest. You guys did a reaction to Nightwish Ghost Love Score; noticed how many females were there, especially up front where the cameras are? Now check out a live video of Septic Flesh (a symphonic death metal band from Greece) and see how many females are there.
I always make the analogy of different types of alcohol. The more extreme the band the higher the proof. So Master of Puppets is 80 proof like Jack Daniels while the Black album is 56 proof like Disaronno. Doesn't make it bad just a lot easy to drink thus it's popularity.
So she likes good lyrics and relaxed songs !

Try not to be offended by your lady friend not liking every aspect of the song. I think you are trying to prove she's not as aware as you are but she has enough musical sensibility to focus on the parts which vibe best. Then she can gradually take in the whole work, just like any great creation. 🙏
I think that the reason that a lot of people can't really relate and feel the metal music (and classical as well) is that this kind of music is more complex and lyrics are more likely to be abstract. That's why commented lyrics of ghost Love Score that way. You don't speak like that in your everyday life so it's completely normal, that you have hard times to relate to that.
And because the music is more complex, it takes more afford to stay focused on the music. And if you don't miss something you get lost and then you don't get it and you don't like it. It's like with movies... If you talk with your friends and don't pay attention to actual movie, you can miss something important and then you don't get the plot and you don't like the movie.
And speaking of movies... there are tons of sub-genres and tons of musicians and although 2 bands have both label METAL, they can sound completely different, but that's something you've already discovered.

I do like classical music and have been to live symphonies and love it! I put it on to relax and vibe so maybe I have to start looking at metal the same way? 🤷🏻♀️ Metal confuses me for sure. 😅

Reasons why people might like the black album more than master of puppets (which is my favorite) :
- clean mix
- Hetfield voice being spot on
- harmonies
Plus, if you watch her, you'll see that she clings to the lyrics, singing along... When I sing along a metal song, I always sing along the guitars... even during verses. I'm not sure sure is liking the instrumental parts as much. Not singing the solo along !
